An excellent reference text for readings on contempory issue
The book is in two parts: the first lays down the elements of citical thinking and the art of dissecting an argument, and the second is an excellent selection of readings which offer both pro and con views on a wide variety of social and moral subjects.

I find myself continually referring to the second section of the book, because the readings selected are compelling, and very well written. They include modern writers, as well as the best writings of past authors who explore contemporary issues of their day. That they continue to be "hot" issues today speaks to the continuing struggle we have with certain kinds of issues.

After each pair of readings the authors have offered a series of questions for further thought, which can be used for independent analysis of the reading, or as part of a course in critical thinking. I found these questions very helpful in stimulating discussion with others, especially those with strong feelings in the subject areas.

This book has become a "must read" in my circle of critically thinking frinds.

Save Time & Effort by Having a Look at CD
A wonderful CD! It has helped so much in the Cardiovascular part of my physiology course and saved my time and effort. After taking the whole trip in the CD, I find my self turning the pages very fast and with less need to concentrate in the characteristics and the sequence of events discussed.I think that is because the cardiovascular physiology textbooks tend to describe wordily the whole picture of an event and try to coordinate these events and their characteristics with each other in relation to time and that takes hips of pages (meaning more time to read, concentrate and imagine).Nevertheless,as the proverb says a picture worth thousands of words, it also applies here but in this way : An animation worth shelves of physiology books. The animation and the interactive pictures in the CD will give an idea about the event, its characteristics and the sequence in a minute-look. Furthermore, with the aid of a good physiology textbook the life will be made very easy in your physiology course .However,do not expect from the CD more than the basic concepts of the cardiovascular physiology, it is not a textbook but a review that will help very much and I recommend it strongly for you (Med-Students,nurses,carious people).

The Dark Medieval and the Shadow Inquisition!
This resource guide to role-playing a member of the Shadow Inquisition is an excellent read. From beginning to end, it is a wonderfully comprehensive guide to the various types of Inquisitors, from the crusading knights to the sisters with their prophetic visions. The history that is presented and the background of each of the major groups of Inquisitors is presented with plenty of depth. My reasons for reading this book are not for the purposes of either roleplaying or running a campaign, but I can see where the material in this book could possibly provide a wonderul companion piece for the core book Dark Ages Vampire. An entire chapter is given over to understanding the psyche of the Middle Ages and there are sections that portray individual stories told by, or involving signature characters from the Dark Medieval - which will end up appearing in upcoming Dark Ages novels ;)

The artwork is topnotch from outside cover to black n' white full page prints. This book is an excellent example of the entire Dark Ages line of material and in my opinion, FAR outshines the Masquerade - Modern Nights. Of course, I'm biased since I find the Middle Ages to be a much more interesting time.

This book is a jewel to have on any bookshelf and will present hours of interesting reading and provide an invaluable resource for everything from gaming to simply coming up with YOUR OWN Dark Ages novel (who knows?). Bottom line - get_this_book.

Absolutely marvelous!
Henry Louis Gates' laudable publishing effort 'African-American Women Writers 1910-1940' series, a kind of chronological sequel to the celebrated Schomburg Nineteenth Century Black Women series, comes up with a winning piece of work by Elizabeth Laura Adams; 'Dark Symphony' details Adams' conversion to Catholicism beginning just after the Depression. The character of this book is marvelous, warm and wonderful, and seems perfectly fitted to the story it relates. There are some remarkable moments, for example, the description of Adams' desire for the confessional because of its anonymity -"so no one could see I was black!"- indeed, there are a number of moments that leave one suspended in a kind of new truth, so remarkably adept is the prose. The work is scrupulously, lovingly edited by Carla Kaplan, a recent recipient of a fellowship at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and herself an author. Many of Adams' poems are included as well, including the ubiquitous 'The Last Supper', and two differing versions of her best-known 'The Consecrated.' I hope this series of books is reaching the junior highs and high schools; works like 'Dark Symphony' deserve to be read, and read abundantly, by those whose minds and hearts will be shaping the world we're working toward. Highest recommendation for a genuinely surprising work of literature, and teller of our common history.

surprisingly good book!
This is the first Joyce Adams book I have read, and I was quite pleased with this find! The book is set in the old western times (think John Wayne and Clint Eastwod) and is about Cat, a female gunfighter who gets all dressed up and pretends she's a New York lady in order to fool and revenge herself on the gunfighter Jake who killed her fiance. Only problem is she isn't finding it as easy as she planned! I really enjoyed reading about a strong female character who can equal the men yet retains her feminism, and the way the that Adams incorporates guardian angels into the story is cute, not overly dramatic and too out of place as I have seen in other books. The book is also pretty humorous at times, which I like. I don't want give away the story by praising it too much, but if you like historical romance novels at all, this is definitely a great one to read! For myself, I will definitely be reading more Joyce Adams novels. Hopefully the rest are as interesting as Darling Cat was!
