Overpriced
I purchased this book with lots of hope for its usefulness. Sorry to say that I was extremely disappointed. The format is tedious. The references and referrals to timely resources are outdated. The author's style is pendantic and verbose but at the same time stingy when it comes to the "how" of working with this curriculum. While supposedly useful to a wide variety of ages and levels, it is really only useful to a small audience and requires an excessive amount of preparation on the part of the instructor or parent in order to get the full benefit from the materials. Definitely not useful in group settings as it is marketed in some sectors. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this material. There are plenty of websites out there that are much more user friendly offering much of the same information for free.

Life-Changing!!
This is the best curriculum I have ever seen and/or used in the secular or Christian homeschool market- bar none! Nothing compares to it at all!! According to the kids- and me! However, it is tied in popularity- according to our children, not just me-with one other Hebrew based curriculum that had activities more to their liking (not so much writing all the time, every lesson, but more visual things ready made, to aid them), but it does not use internet links, which we LOVE. So we blend both curriculums together when possible. Thus we will continue to use HOW. It is extremely comprehensive in it's coverage of a subject. Nothing is left out. Plus- you don't have to buy any key resource books if you cannot afford it. You can use the internet links and still cover everything in detail! So it is quite economical for families with small budgets. THAT is liberating in itself! We loved all the internet links. There was no way you could NOT learn, or miss something with the abundance of links for each e-book. I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone looking for the truth in history/science told in a non-threatening way. Not doctrinal teachings, but the actual truth, no matter where that leads for your children and you. And what could be more Biblical than that?
This has been a life-changing experience for our entire family. We spend more time together in God's Word and are growing in our understanding together! Learning Israel's history has been a tremendous benefit to understanding all of history, past, present, and future. Also, learning about our Hebrew roots has brought new life to our relationship with God thru Jesus Christ.

Wonderful unit study book!
This is an excellent book. The studies on the ancients are tremendous, like nothing we have ever done before.I had used other units to try and study this time period, and was not impressed. But,this one fits the bill.It is a christian based unit and I love studying about the related materials and NOT about the false gods of the time periods.Using the Bible as a literature text sure hooked me on this too.
It is easy to use and not at all rigid. We are loving it and this is a rare treat and blessing to our family. Not only is this for young people,but-older people as well.
We did get the Family Feasts book by Robin as well. This works great with this unit.
I highly recommend you to get this unit. You will love it-your child will too. This is a treat!
And,you can use it for either 1 year or two years. It is all listed and explained in the book.
Get this while you can.Well worth the money.
I do not think that you can transfer the internet links on here,If you buy it used, that is.
The only way this can be done is if you buy it new.If you bought it used-it would had to not been signed up under the other person.
But...there is enough in the unit that you will not miss anything by not having that.

Research?
Recent eye movement research by Dr. Eric Paulson refutes most of the finding in this text.

Brilliant review
This book offers a wealth of information about reading development. It is a terrific source, as well for the scientist, as for the interested layman. Although it is biased toward the Seidenberg and McClelland model, the wealth of empirical data is more than compensating. It is an heroic attemt to synthesize different viewpoints.

The resource book on learning to read!
This is the book that other books on teaching reading refers to. It provides all of the "who, what, where, when, why, and hows" of teaching reading to children. A must-buy if you're a teacher of reading or at all interested in the topic.

not too shabby
Gotta say, i've used several review book for the boards, and this one certainly has good stuff. easy to use tables, graphs, and a compilation of all the important stuff from the other review books. not a bible like first aid, but a good, clean comprehensive review. helped me match ortho baby.

good luck

Step Up to A terrific Step 1 Review Book
Terrific review book. It's in the body systems format and does a good job of integrating material, with the possible exception of pharm. Very useful for Step 1 study.

A MUST HAVE!
for a first edition, this book does have some errors but it is by far the best thing out there right now ... excellent diagrams, great figures, and phenomenal systems-based approach to the boards ...

a must buy for the individual who wants to do well on the boards!!!!

Good Range shooting guide
I know at the range we call our clays "birds" but I thought the title was a little misleading. The book is very helpful for range work and "taking more clays" but was disappointed when I found only a small section indicating that the technique would be helpful in the field. Upland bird hunting is considerably different than range shooting and those differences deserve much more attention than this book provides.

If you're looking for wingshooting instruction, keep looking
If your primary focus is sporting clays, this is a good read. From the start of "Taking More Birds...", the author states that the book is directed at the sporting clay enthusiast. I was a little vibed because I bought the book to improve my wingshooting. My decision to buy it was largely based on its title (last time I checked clay pigeons didn't have actual wings). There is a lot of good information and much of it does transfer to wingshooting. But if you are more interested in wingshooting, I would pick up the Brister book or the Orvis book (heck, even the author of "Taking More Birds..." refers to them - what does that tell you?). It's a good addition to a shooter's library, but definitely not the bible.

Sporting Clays
A simple, practical guide to the basics of Sporting Clay shooting. This book will assist everyone taking up the sport to improve their scores and techniques.

2nd print of tpb a minor improvement
The 2nd print is very close, but no cigar. After the computer coloring hack job of the first print, Marvel redid some of the issues, as there were originally printed 30 years ago. Unfortunately, there are still some pages, here and there, that still have this bad coloring work. On top of it, I now see some colored pages from the 80's special edition reprints making it an inconsistent mess.
Hopefully by the time Marvel releases the 3rd print, ALL of the coloring for this collection will be brought back to its former glory.

Classic tales by a classic team
Just as the Original X-Men's run was hampered by ridiculously low sales, Marvel tried to salvage the title by conscripting two greats -- Roy Thomas and Neal Adams -- to come up with some butt-kicking tales. And this they did! Adams can tell a story by himself, really, with his spectacular pencils. His sense of perspective, lighting and presence is truly phenomenal. Unfortunately, even he and Thomas couldn't prevent X-Men from lowering into the depths of reprints, despite their herculean effort.

In these collected tales you'll witness the Living Monolith, Havoc, the Sentinels, Sauron, Ka-Zar and the civilization-destroying Z'Nox. Overall, this is well worth the $$.

A Great X-Men book! Neal Adams is wonderful!
A Great Collection of Unccany X-Men issues! Neal Adams was a popular comic book artist during the early 1970s. Uncanny X-men#57-65 was his first professional work for Marvel comics. He inspired many of the later artist like John Byrne, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Lee to draw the X-men. Many people do not remember him because he was popular during the Silver Age of X-men. During that time, Many popular characters like Wolerine, Storm, Rouge,Gambit, and Nightcrawler, did not even exits. The X-men's roster was the original team, Cyclops, Jeany Grey, Iceman, Beast, Angel, Havok and Polaris. Buy this book if you were a fan of the X-Men and Neal Adams during the early 1970's! Buy it! Neal Adams inspired many of today's artist like John Byrne and Jim Lee to become the popular comic book artists they are today!

Magnificent...Beautiful...artful
Carlos Fuentes true epic surrendered me to tears...Laura Diaz whether a fictional character of Frida Kahlo's assistant, brought me an Argentine born individual to great emotional depts...It is a lyrical novel, which tells truths beyond truths...Carlos Fuentes writes and depicts all of his characters with great intellect, knowledge of the times, and incredible perspective...Was totally aghast at the comment by one of our reviewers that stated that this book was not historically correct and that Carlos Fuentes is a shameful communist...Au contraire, readers, Carlos Fuentes is a poet and a latin, and therefore tells the truths about our countries and the US with a very objective eye...Since the Where the Air is Clear by him as well, no other book has touched my inner being and left me completely breathless...It is a book that is both timeless and reflective, emotional and philosophical...and most of all one of the most satisfying performances by Carlos Fuentes...Viva Carlos Fuentes, un autor con tanta sabiduria!!!

I would suggest that readers re-read his beautiful prose more than once and refer to this book throughout their lifetime, it is filled with the passion, pulse of individuals who are citizens of the world...

Thank you, thank you...Carlos, for a great magnificent book...

The Years With Laura Diaz are magnificent!
This is a novel of great depth, written by a man who has lived his life observing, thinking, asking questions, considering and writing. His great talent lies in speaking for many: for fathers, mothers, sons, lovers, passionate revolutionaries and for each of us.

The Years With Laura Diaz, is as great a mural and testament, and as real and colorful as the Diego Rivera mural that graces its cover. Just as the great mural tells the history and stories of a people, so this magnificently written work shows us the colors and contrasts that richly color our world. Do check out our Guest Reviewer Deborah D/M's full review.

Love, Politics, and Life in a Century of Mexico
Carlos Fuentes takes us on a sweeping journey of the 20th century as he reveals the history, culture, and political life of Mexico and the world. Fuentes draws on his own family history to weave a tale of love and tragedy and of extraordinary people whose lives and work influenced their times. Laura Diaz, the heroine both normal and unusual in her roles as wife and mother--lover and artist, waltzes through the years with grace and vitality. Her honesty and common sense approach to life make her an example for the many lives that she touches. She married a dashing young man in the labor movement andwas thrown into the political mainstream that coursed through Mexico City in the early part of the century. She also was the lover of more than one dashing and famous man as she joined the high life of Spanish-European society that existed in Mexico City. Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo became friends of hers, and she traveled with them to the United States as Diego painted his famous--and infamous--series of murals celebrating the workers. As a friend of Frieda's, Laura was able to tell the tragic story of the famous painter and her struggle with health and tragedy. The figure of Santiago, first the murdered brother of Laura and later her son and grandson, symbolizes the heroic persona who fights for what is right only to be cut down before his prime. Laura holds her love of these three in her heart, and eventually it sustains her through her life and into her new career. That in later life she became a famous photographer of the poor and downtrodden is indicative of the love she has for the three Santiagos, and for her husband and lovers, all of whom where involved in the people's movement. This novel encompasses all that is important in life, and it celebrates the courage and vitality of those who are willing to spend their lives for other's causes. The tracing of Mexico's history from revolution, corrupt politics and visionary idealism, interwoven with Laura's life, is fascinating, and leaves the reader with a better understanding not only of Mexico bul also of the human spirit.

good for cramming
I hate memorizing lists of words and their respective definitions. Even though they have one or two sentences to show you how they are used. My favorite method is to read them in context. This will probably only be done by reading copiously. Reading the Princeton word (Junior) was fantastic. I wish they could make one like that, but at a higher level. The Junior book had great cute stories and the most amount of new word learning anyone can have from reading so little.

A Plethora and Palatable Paragon of Perfection
Yes, alliteration was intended. Robert Jackson has been predisposed to a myriad of vocabulary books. I can vociferously divulge(alliteration intended again) that Word Smart II proves to be a most resplendent addition to my extensive bookshelf. Needless to say, I skipped Word Smart I due to its insipid vacuousness. Unless you are an ingrate neophyte, I highly suggest you do the same.

All other vocab books induce an incendiary, and seemingly ineluctable, grandiose sense of malaise, or ennui, if you will.
I scored a 99 Percentile on my SAT Verbal - that's 790 for you incorrigible philistine heathens. If you value your vocabulary prowess, I entreat you to procure this erudite and quintessential book for yourself. I cannot underscore this enough. It is demonstrably incumbent upon you to do so - unless cultivation is anathema to your morbid proletariat existence.

Excellent Vocabulary Building Book
The WordSmart series is excellent. I worked through WordSmart I and then I worked through this book. I can use more words and I can use words better since studying WordSmart II.

Appalatian Legacy:Photographs by Shelby Lee Adams
In preparation to write this review Ive had to stop and calm down many times. Its a terrible crime what Mr. Adams has done by his demeaning photos of the peoples of Appalachia. Being one of them I understand there plight to better themselves As Mr. Adams should. He him self is from Appalachia, the same area he returns to for his subject mater. The difference between him and the people still there is they don't go to his home in Boston and take demeaning photos of him. And sell them for profit. The people I have met have know idea he is making money from his sales, (or that he is selling them at all) they believe they can trust him after all he is one of there own. Apparently they were mistaken. Most don't have any Idea about the internet or how demeaning they are being portrayed.

vickie bassetti afternoon
One rainy afternoon this spring while walking the streets of the French Quarter,I discovered Shelby Lee Adams in the fine art gallery of VICKIE BASSETTI.Not only his portaits but a collection of his books.I was blown away! For me his portraits of the Appalachians ARE haunting. One might want to look away from such poverty, dirt, and assumed saddness..but I found, just the reverse.I wanted to look closer,to feel the importance of the artist Adams, and the story he was showing through the lens of his eye.And to realize THIS IS AMERICA !
I say THANK YOU MR. ADAMS for the quality of your work and the artistry of your portraits that gives dignity to a world most AMERICANS rarely choose to see.

Wonderful!
Shelby Lee Adams is wonderful photographer. I am from Kentucky, and although the photographs are not typical of most people of the area, they definitely document part of the dying culture of Appalachia...people like the ones pictured do exist!
Some feel that Adams' photos are demeaning to the subjects. I don't feel this way at all. Instead, I feel that he is portraying his subjects as something interesting and worth documenting. Anyone offended by the photos has their own bias against the subjects.
The pictures in this book are also among the most interesting photos I have ever seen. Every time you look at one of Shelby Lee Adams' photos, you see something new and interesting about it. I highly recommend this book. This guy is my favorite photographer!

A Poor Read
Skeleton in the Closet was a poor rendering of the causes and effects of an eating disorder. Besides the frequent grammatical errors and inconsistent style the book never manages to offer any original insight on eating disorders on either a personal or cultural level. The dialogue is confusing and the descriptions are given in a childlike, colorless manner. The author at one point even referred to an African-American nurse as a "colored lady," an outdated and offensive reference. For a book on this subject that is both explicative and emotional try Wasted by Marya Hornbacher and skip this one.

Great Story! I Couldn't Put the Book Down!
The book is terrific! I couldn't put it down! It was as if I experienced what the author went through. I recommend it to others suffering from an eating disorder, as well as for their families.

A TERRIC READ!
A wonderful story about a woman with an eating disorder. It takes the reader back into the woman's childhood, where it all began. This book allows the reader to feel and experience what she went through. I want to thank the author for finally making sense of something that is a mystery to many.

Is Book Burning Illegal?
This is going to be short. After having read "Living On The Edge" I thought I was getting another tale of life as a fisherman.Instead, what I got was life as a fisherman at town council meetings. The book is currently being used under the short leg of my pool table. ...

Better subtitle "Death of the New England Fisherman"?
Being a New England fisherman (hehe-rather, woman) I found the day-to-day lives of the fisherman very interesting-who knew scallops had blue eyes? However, I had a difficult time following the time frame of events because of the way Mr. Carey jumped around. I couldn't even tell exactly what year this book was taking place without some re-reading. The politics involved are sickening in the amount of time wasted and the fact that the committees could get nothing accomplished, evidenced with the ongoing cod crisis in New England today. Too bad none of the politicians involved happened to read this book.

An excellent inside look at the Commercial Fishing Industry.
If you read The Perfect Storm and came away wanting to know more about the commercial fishing industry, this is the book. Carey explains the views of the men and women who risk life, limb, and fortune in the waters off Cape Cod. He also explains the tedium of public hearings and governmental rule making which impact the lives of the fishermen.

I spent the summer in a rented house overlooking the commercial fishing fleet in Bodega Bay, California. I often wondered what happened on those boats once they left the harbor, and what regulations governed them. Against the Tide explains it all.

By way of criticism, I found the characters a bit hard to follow and the discussions of the regulations a bit tedious, but overall I learned a lot.
