Nature photographers take note
In a series of essays, photographer and critic Robert Adams goes beyond the images of landscape photographers and provides an impassioned plea for colleagues to care at least as much about our common lands as we do about preserving them for posterity only on film.

Adams is right: Photographers have something of a moral obligation to care about the fate of their subjects beyond the fraction of a second it takes to make an image.

Dog eared and well thumbed
This book has been of great assitance to me in my teaching and creative practice over the years. It has been a source of inspiration and motivation allowing me to continue working with my cameras and photography, at the same time reconciling different ideas about 'money', 'ideas', 'freinds', 'teaching' etc to enable me to maintain my faith in what I do.

The essays on teaching and money in particular have helped me clarify my position as both an artist and teacher, I highly recommend this book to anyone considering teaching or photography as a career.

Adams writes about photography as well as he photographs
This excellent book of essays reveals much about the motivations of photographers and provides thought-provoking subjects relative to a life in photography. Adams' writing is straightforward and insightful and an excellent inspiration in a sometimes confusing, but mysterious art.

Young Adam

Author: Alexander Trocchi

Average review score:

Young Stranger
While Trocchi's take on alienation has more than a few parallels to Camus' "The Stranger", the landscape and characters provoke a more visceral reaction. Amazing that most people only know Trocchi's pornographic material - this version has been edited to reflect his original story.

A Much Overlooked Author
"Young Adam" was a suggested read by my reading partner. How he discovered Alexander Trocchi is beyond me. But I found his writing style, as well as his own outlook of the the world incredibly interesting.

Trocchi's works were said to have been exiled out of Scottish literature, along with Trocchi physically. His writings stretched to the outer limits of moral acceptability. Holding anti-establishment attitudes, a lack of "work ethics", and sexual promiscuity, Trocchi simply tells it as it is through his own philosophy, which allows the reader to concentrate on the story and examine the characters as they unfold. A strong narrative voice guides you through the events of this simple, yet thought provoking storyline.

The story is told by Joe, a barge worker, who shares quarters with Leslie, his wife Ella, and their son, which Joe often refers to as "the kid". The body of a dead woman is found floating in the river, and taken aboard the barge. As the story unfolds, the connection between the dead woman, the circumstances of her death, and two innocent men, caught between a rock and a hard place, nervously emerge and come together. Lingering in the back of your mind, the question of fate or freedom for either of these men.

The question this story evoked in my mind was simply, "What would I do if I were in this man's position?" You will "walk a mile" in Joe's shoes in "Young Adam" But it still leaves this question unanswered.

Read "Young Adam" and see if you can discover a solution to this moral dilemma. I tip my hat to you Alexander Trocchi, ya done good!!!

I must admit...
...that I purchased this book because a movie adaptation starring Ewan Mcgregor is currently in the works... I had never even heard of Alexander Trocchi before reading this (his first novel, originally published in 1954). The story is relatively simple; it is told from the viewpoint of Joe, the hired hand on a barge that traverses the Clyde river between Glasgow and Edinburgh. One morning (on page 2), he pulls the body of a woman out of the river, and that event sets the story in motion. This is really a character driven narrative and I found it very easy to relate to Joe and his environment, even though I am 50 years and about 6000 miles removed from it. As the story progresses, and more and more about Joe's past is gradually revealed, the book becomes quite engrossing. Trocchi has a way of taking incredibly mundane experiences and describing them using the most beautiful, flowing prose...I can't understand why more people aren't familiar with this author's work as he's easily in the same league as Bukowski and Burroughs... Overall, I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to read more of Trocchi's work!

Must Reading
In my opinion, this is the basic book for those interesed in psychodrama. It contains the fundamentals and is worth reading for both beginning students and seasoned therapists.

A good and practical book
"Acting In: Practical Applications of Psychodramatic Methods" is a good companion to Blatner's earlier work, "Foundations of Psychodrama." He takes the reader step by step through the elements of psychodrama, including principals and pitfalls and techniques such as role reversal, doubling and surplus reality.

As usual, Blatner's writing is clear and succinct and will be helpful to students as well as experienced psychotherapists and educators who are new to the psychodramatic method.

Of special interest is the section that notes that psychodrama has many applications, not just in the mental health professions but also with the education of children and adolescents, and in creative dramatics, industry and religion.

Great Book!
This book was a great read! I especially enjoyed it because I'm interested in adopting in the future, and this gave me an insight into the foster care system, albeit in Canada. The writing was great, although it's definitely a young adult book and not an adult book! The plot line would be a bit too easy for adults, but I don't think this would be a problem with younger readers (high school would be fine with it).

All in all, I really enjoyed this! I hope to read more of this author's books!

Grrrrreat and I haven't even finished it!!
The book is great for me. I only started reading this afternoon and I already love it! It's about this great Sara Moone a very interesting character whom many people will be able to relate to. Once you start this book...you won't be able to put it down. Go get it!

This time they travel to Jutland (main part of Denmark) to find a missing person who has left some weird poetry behind. The poetry is the key to finding the missing person, who accidentaly has been searching for some sort of gate and has kind of gone mad at the same time. This lead to ....... Excellent book, but in Danish (as far as I know not yet translated).

Us Special Operations Forces in Action: The Challenge of Unconventional Warfare

A bit too detailed of a summary...
Although I think this is a good book, I thought the emphasis on logistical descriptions was too severe. I had to struggle through portions on unit descriptions that were a myriad acronyms and batallion numbers. The antecdotal descriptions of special forces events are far better served by topic specific novels. For example, "Black Hawk Down" by M. Bowden did a much better job of setting the ferocity and importance of the events in Somalia, as well as a better description of the special forces involved, even though that was secondary to the plot. I learned more about the SEALS from reading Marcinko's non-fiction Rogue Warrior novel than I felt I digested from this book. I also thought the author was too focused on Psychological Ops., whose role as a special force, is well, boring. In sum, although a sterling account on the descriptions of the special forces units and their specific goals, the lack of real-event development, such as Stephen Ambrose makes this a hard book to finish.

Understanding Special Operations
I really enjoyed this book since it is a real departure from the usual collection of "there I was, ankle deep in hot brass" stories that characterize writing on special operations. It has some of that, but in the main this is a thoughtful look at the evolving nature, purpose and application of America's "secret warriors." The author's real focus is the underlying philosophy of special operations and the way that they fit (or compete) with more conventional military methods. This is a unique book, recommended for anyone whose interest in the topic goes beyond the "gee-whiz" level.

A revealing, entertaining, hard-headed look at Special Ops
The is probably the best book of its type available to the general public. It is based on a lifetime of association with the field and it has its quota of war stories, but most of it is a merciless look at the capabilities, merits and demerits of US elite forces. I am a retired special ops officer and, even if I don't agree with all the opinions expressed, the facts are straight. It contains the kind of material normally reserved for classified briefings. This book is unhestitatinly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.

Weapon X (Marvel Comics X-Men Deluxe)

A happy Logan, in a world gone to hell
When the Legion Quest storyline ended, an alternate universe was created due to the fact that Legion went back in time to kill Magneto but accidently killed Charles Xavier. Since Xavier died, there was no X-Men to stop Apocalypse from taking over America and most of the world. This alternate reality, The Age of Apocalypse, put all the regular X-books on hold for four issues and replaced them with they're AoA versions. Weapon X (Wolverine) tells the storyline revolving around Logan (he is not called Wolverine in this alternate reality) who in all his long lifetime in the regular X-universe was never able to find happiness. In the Age of Apocalypse, Logan is finally with the woman he loves: Jean Grey, and he couldn't be happier (then again he is missing a hand). The intense love and emotion between the two should be seen to be believed. Logan has an early run in with Havok, and we learn the past between Logan and Cyclops (in this reality Cyclops and Havok are servants to Apocalypse) and how Jean Grey ties in (to find out a bit more read the X-Man TPB). Eventually Jean must leave Logan to find out some info, and Logan has a few battles with Pierce and other cyborgs. Carol Danvers and Gateway make some appearances, but sometimes the action lags and the story can become a bit incoherent. The art is great and Logan's narration is as well, and is sometimes darkly hilarious. All in all, this is a good chapter in the Age of Apocalypse saga.

In hell on earth - one man finally found his hapiness
Welcome to hell on earth. North America is ruled by an evil mutant called Apocalypse. His kingdom only lives by one rule: Survivial of the fittest. Humans are regarded as the lower class and even not all mutants will be survive in this world. This all happened because Professor Charles Xavier never existed. Thus he never got to form the X-Men to appose Apocalypse.

To prevent Apocalypse from taking over the rest of the world, the Human High Counsil in Europe decide to bomb the US - making sure Apocalypse doesn't go any further. They are aided by Weapon X and his one true love, Jean Grey. If you know Wolverine, you know that his life has been hell in the original timeline. But in this one, where everyone is in danger, he is happy - because he is with the one who he truly loves. And he sacrificed one of his hands for her.

This induvidual story is quite good and it features a nice cameo from Carol Danvers. The art is above average and the usual narration by Logan is present as well.

These stories won't mean much if you haven't read this AoA storyline from the start. If you get this, I recommend you get all the other AoA TPBs too. For a complete reading list of it, see my X-Men: LegionQuest review.

The most outstanding tale of the AOA X-men ever conceived
With the most incredible drawings and eloborate storyline, this 4 parter stands head and shoulders ablove any thing else you will ever read in comic book form. Without going into detail of the plot (and ruining the story), this is a perfect world for Logan. If you have followed the life of the man called Logan, you will know only too well that his life has been cursed with tradegy, marred with the failure to find happiness. In this story, in a messed up world filled with familiar messed up people, it brought a tear to my eye to see his one true mission succeed. He is battle hardened, scarred, tortured, not the Logan we know. This would be reason enough to despise the world in which they put him. The only thing available to him which makes me love this world so much is his sidekick, his companion, his soulmate, his best friend and his lover. This book is worth ten times it's cost to see Logan & Jean Gray together. What a perfect world.

What happens when a woggle of witches goes out for the night
I first remember hearing the term "woggle" to refer to a type of insect that L. Frank Baum wrote about (see "The Woggle-Bug Book: The Unique Adventures of the Woggle-Bug"). Here the term "woggle" refers to a medium-sized group of witches. This is just one of the very interesting things that Adrienne Adams has found out about witches. I did not know that witches liked to sleep in cozy hammocks in the branches of trees or that there are things that scare even them. Each of the double-page spread in this book tells of what happens one night when the witches go out for fun. "A Woggle of Witches" is a simple little tale, which should amuse small children and reassure them that witches are really more scared of them (at least on Halloween night).

Playfully spooky
A playfully written Halloween book with just enough "spooky". It is written from the perspective of the witches. Artwork and dialogue is intriguing to youngsters. A favorite of my 3-year-old.

"Leave the dishes! It's time to go!"...A Witch's Night Out
This is a charming book for Halloween reading pleasure with double page illustrations and minimal text that still packs in plenty of humor and spooky fun. Meet the witches deep in the heart of the dark forest as they wake up to celebrate that certain night! Scoop a little bat stew out of the bubbling cauldron and then grab your broomstick for some ace flying. The joyful faces on this woggle of witches as they cut loose with their Halloween hijinx are sure to make you smile, too. But what's this?! The witches get "spooked" by some trick-or-treaters that send them flying back home to the forest. A great time is had by all. I love the exciting atmosphere of celebration that this book creates with so few words.

Run "Deep Rising" in the World of Darkness
When I first saw this book on the shelf of my usual retailer (at that time), I wondered what it could be. I wasn't sure to buy it, but I took a chance, and did so. From the beginning on, it felt really interesting. Who hasn't ever heard stories of ghost-ships? Then, as a Werewolf storyteller, I wondered about the Rokea (at that time their book wasn't out yet). The book grew more and more interesting, and even when I'd never before run chronicles "on the sea", I did so from then on. The book also features the incredible Gangrel Aquarii or Mariners, which are a really interesting bloodline of the Gangrel clan. So, if you liked "Deep Rising", "Jaws", "Moby Dick", and others... you'll probably like to tell your own stories on the furious seas of the World of Darkness.

A fine addition to any WOD library.
This book can add an oft-overlooked dimension to any world of darkess game or chronicle, with in-depth descriptions of everything necessary for running what I consider to be one of the most terrifying types of game.

GREAT BUY!!!
It's a great book for all those changelings out there. It contains that secrets of the two NEW aquatic Merfolk, yes Merfolk Kiths. From the dark and sinister Thallain, Merrow to the glorious (and a bit conceited) Merfolk. 3 New Arts, 5 introductory treasures, and a bunch on the new brithrights and abilities. Although, the rules are a bit scratchy, but great buy.

And for all those other living in the WoD new information on how wraiths survive in the oceans and the great wars and relic ships and arts of the sea. Aquatic Gangrel and Lasombra. The dark secrets of the Technocracy and Pentex in the deep sea. And the evil activites of the Wyrm and the "Kraken" under the sea, plus information on the children of Kraken, those infected with a powerful virus. The whole book adds new depth and dimension to the WoD.

A wonderful weave of mythology and symbolism...
A book I would never have gotten if not for my final course I took in univeristy, a course on Mythology and Symbolism, I went into this book thinking, "Gosh, myths. Yawn."

I was sadly mistaken. Parallelling Joseph Campbell's notion of universal myths, this book is an exciting journey through various myth-types that seem to crop up in nearly every culture. Explore Creation Myths, Flood Myths, Hero Myths, and Object Myths, for a few examples, in a way that crosses cultures and time periods with ease. A truly diverse selection is in this work, this is not just your typical compilation of Greek and Roman myths. Eastern and Western mythologies tie in with Celtic and Asian and Nordic and Hebrew.

If you are at all interested in mythology, this is the book for you.

An excellent collection
This is a wonderful collection of Mythology from all over the world. It is very useful in determining common threads of myth in different socieities...

Very Readable
Like other reviewers, I would have not given this book a second thought were it not one of my textbooks for English 102. I was pleasantly surprised! It is a very enjoyable introduction to viewing myths from the Jungian perspective. There are stories from all over the world, including the Bible, the Torah, and the Koran. While I am suspicious of a couple of the sources that Leeming uses, most are wonderful, from scholars like Joseph Campbell and Samuel Noah Kramer. I appreciate the most that there are actual translations of important myths like those of Inanna and Pan instead of paraphrasing or summaries: hearing them in their original lyrical form makes a BIG difference! There are few books that I will not sell back at the end of the semester: this is one that I hung on to!
