Early Cinema: Space, Frame, Narrative

An excellent resource for anyone interested in silent films
This is an incredibly informative and interesting collection of essays exploring the beginnings of cinema from a mixture of perspectives. While attention is paid to social history and the material conditions of early films, apparatus and venues, most of these essays also do a fine job of theorizing cinematic narrative. Often, books on silent film offer only a contextul and historical analysis, often because critics think of the early cinema as "primitive." These essays take these early films on their own terms and read them suggestively. As a result, this volume allows film scholars and anyone interested in early film to see how the lessons and experiments of silents not only contributed to but often predicted and surpassed the "classical" cinema's traditional notion of what cinematic narrative could and should be.

Eden
Like much of Robert Adams work, this book at first appears transparently ordinary--photographs of a truck stop somewhere in the middle of nowhere--but somehow resonates with memories. There is the irony of the name of the place cast against the bleakness of the photographs--but Adams claims that no irony is intended. But my own memeories called out by this book are of long car trips before air conditioning, the smell of hot engine oil, of cars overheating, the taste of cold coke in a bottle, and the smell of diesel engines long before anyone thought of air polution. The biblical Eden was a place of perfection before the fall, but these pictures must refer to the same place at some later time, after the the tree was cut to make way for the interstate.

Excellent bibliography
This book (which began life as a dissertation) will very much interest women's history buffs and students of American literature but is less likely to please physicians or students of abnormal psychology. Clover Hooper comes out of a Boston family almost as intriguing as that of the Adams. She is one of Henry James' ideal American girls, and might have become James' wife had he been inclined to marry. She maintained a glittering establishment while Henry Adams was in Washington, and many of her points of view are reflected in The Education of Henry Adams. Clover's father was her closest intellectual companion and when (in her mid-30s) he died, she fell into depression and within a few months had committed suicide. The Education of Mrs. Henry Adams was published in the late 1970s and includes as complete a bibliography, to that time, as one could wish, including a reference to Susan Phinney Conrad's witty Perish the Thought: Intellectual Women in Romantic America, 1830-1860.

It was well-written with excellent discription,and . . .
I believe that this was one of the greatest art books. This outstanding book displayed 59 of Hopper's greatest paintings with awesome detail and spectacular quotes. It not only showed the different ways Hopper defined and looked at life, but I could feel like I was the artist. Not only did the paintings create a perspective of life most people don't look at, but I could relate to his points of view.

Edward S. Curtis by Hans Christian Adam
The author, Hans Christian Adam, is clearly an admirer of his subject, Edward S. Curtis. Curtis, who lived from 1868-1952, devoted his life to photographing the American Indian. In this book, Adam has included 172 pages of Curtis' most impressive photos along with 15 pages of text and a paragraph by Theodore Roosevelt on Curtis. Adam gives a clear picture of Curtis as a man as well as a photographer. In his photos, Curtis shows the life, customs, history, legends and religion of the Indians. To quote Adam: "Curtis wanted to make up for the injustices that members of his race had inflicted on the Indians". The high quality, large format, sepia photos are magical and leave a lasting impression on the viewer. The best part of the book is the photos. The only thing I do not like about the book is that the text is in English, German and French. This takes up space, but it does not detract from the photos and text. This book will make the reader want to see more photos by Curtis.

provides an excellent historical basis...
This book provides a wonderful examination of how emerging communication technologies impact the society that spawned them. Each major media advance (papyrus, parchment, paper, the printing press) causes major shifts in the social paradigms of the societies that adopt its use... definately worth the read. This edition has an afterword by Dr. David Godfrey regarding the impact of the electronic form.
