Internet Communicators: Producers and Consumers
Tyrone Adams' and Norman Clark's new book, The Internet: Effective Online Communication, provides a comprehensive and insightful view of the Internet from a communication perspective. Although there are other texts on the Internet, this is the first to focus on communication competence in the online environment. The text integrates theory and practice to help readers become critical Internet consumers and producers.

I found Chapter 1 on the Internet's history the most intriguing. That background information provides a context for understanding the Internet's structure and current uses. In Chapter 2, the authors distinguish the Internet from other communication mediums, and at the same time observe that the boundaries between communication contexts are blurring.

Chapters 3-5 cover the nuts and bolts of communicating online: email, listservs, newsgroups, chat rooms, MUDs, MOOs, and net conferencing. Although most students are quite familiar with email, listservs, and chat rooms, they are often less familiar with newsgroups, MUDs, MOOs, and net conferencing. With more and more organizations using net conferencing for work group and team meetings, the latter topic is especially useful.

Chapters 6 and 7 address gathering information on the Internet. These invaluable chapters move readers out of the traditional search engine to other search strategies such as topic rings and bibliographic databases. In addition, the authors provide specific criteria for evaluating online information and how to cite the information found.

Chapters 8-10 shift the reader from an Internet consumer to an Internet producer. With the help of the CD-ROM included with the book, students can design a fairly sophisticated webpage. Although the authors stress the utility of learning HTML, the web editor on the CD-ROM allows students to produce their first webpage with ease.

Students found Part 5, "Exiting Cyberspace: Implications of the Internet," particularly informative and sometimes surprising. For example, Chapter 12, "The Internet and U.S. Law," led several students to investigate computer use policies in the workplace.

My students gave the book high marks for readability, current examples, and thorough explanations. The authors' familiarity with effective online communication is plainly evident: Adams and Clark don't just write about the Internet; they are cybertravelers, clearly comfortable with and truly knowledgeable about Internet communication. We've become so immersed in online communication that we seldom give it a second thought. Adams and Clark include provocative information that will spark much debate in any classroom. Students learn practical online communication skills, as well as the theoretical background they need to adjust to an ever-changing and increasingly globalized Internet.

College students interview their immigrant grandparents
Humor, joy, triumph, and sometimes heartbreak are some of the memories immigrant grandparents have as they speak to their college age grandchildren. There are stories from China, Russia, Uganda, Jamaica, and Argentina (to name only a few) that link the different generations separated not only by time, but by experiences. In some cases the grandparent is a reluctant subject. In others, the grandchild resists conducting the interview. There are times the grandparent must be heard through the voice (and memory) of the parent. The result is a celebration and appreciation of the relationship between grandparent and grandchild. The book is a joy to read.

Introduction to Microcomputers: Basic Concepts
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media (June, 1980)
Author: Adam Osborne
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $2.85
Collectible price: $30.50

Microcomputer classic
This or one of many other equivalent 'introduction to computer' books will be useful to introduce the general reader to the concept of computation and the techniques used in commercial computers, often assumed background knowledge in other references discussing alternative computational architectures such as neural networks. This book is the revised edition of the 1976 classic that introduced the world of computation, albeit in the form of microcomputers, to thousands of readers. The binary arithmetic, CPU and memory architecture, logical operations, instruction sets and programming, are concepts that are still relevant to modern computing. At the time of this reference, Adam Osborne was a well known personal computer-related writer. In 1971 he was involved in the documentation for the Intel 4004 microprocessor, and at the time of this book was running a company manufacturing one of the first widely purchased portable microcomputer systems.

Introduction to Number Theory

Still the one I use the most
This book was the textbook when I took my first course in Number Theory many years ago. At that time I found it to be very easy to read and the exercises challenging, yet doable. Since then I have used it as my first reference when encountering any problem in number theory where the background of the problem does not immediately leap to mind. In previous years, I used it as a resource in solving many problems that appeared in problem columns. Nowadays, I use it in my capacity as the editor of Journal of Recreational Mathematics when I am evaluating papers for publication. Even though I have many other basic number theory books in my library, it has stood the test of time, never having been bumped from the privileged position on my bookshelf.

Invisible Hand: The Wealth of Adam Smith
Published in Paperback by University Press of the Pacific (September, 2002)
Author: Andres Marroquin
Amazon base price: $22.95

Founding father of economic conservatism
Founding father of economic conservatism, Smith nevertheless sympathized with the working class and scorned landlords and other capitalists whom he deemed incapable of heeding public regulations. Today his books are frequently quoted yet seldom read. Smith was far less optimistic than many people assume; though he considered capitalism the basis for personal freedom, he expected that both the propertied class and the workers would push for their narrow self-interests.

Sinn Fein's part in creating Peace
I have read several of Gerry Adam's books. This one is particularly good for someone who wishes to really understand the politics between Ireland and Britain. It gives a first hand account of the effort that Sinn Fein has put into finding peace. It clearly demonstrates how each time the british government gets what they ask for, they create another stumbling block. The reader can easily see that without Sinn Fein's initial efforts there would be no hope for peace. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Great folktales for every audience
Richard Adams presents folk tales to the reader in a clever way.
Ths book is hard to find in good condition, but if you can get a hold of one, I highly recommend purchasing it!
It is called 'The Unbroken Web and 'The Iron Wolf and other stories'. I am a fan of Richard Adam's work, and so I treasure this book like I do all of his.
The illustrations are unique and wonderful. The introduction is beautiful and changes the way I percieve stories. The first story 'Cat in the Sea' is great! It explains why cats hate water.

This book also includes 'The Legend of te Tuna' which is also called 'The giant eel'.
