For Those with Pointy-Haired Bosses...
...this is the perfect calendar. Hang it in your cubicle. You'll laugh, you'll cry--behind the humor it's all too true! Don't worry about your own personal pointy-haired one being angry. He won't know the calendar's about him. I'd hide it from Dogbert, though. A five-star gem!

The Lovely Angels Destroy Cyberspace!
Despite what the title above says, "Sim Hell" was the fourth book in the American "Dirty Pair" series. And by that time, Adam Warren's artwork had developed to the point of being truly fantastic. This is some of the most beautiful and detailed black and white artwork you will ever see, and it accompanies a great story to boot!

Much to her dismay, Kei, one of the infamous "Lovely Angels," AKA the "Dirty Pair," is ordered back to 3WA headquarters on Shimogu for her annual "evaluative assessment," which includes a direct interface with the enigmatic 3WA Central Computer. Riddled with anxiety, she proceeds to her assessment, and seems to be doing fine. But, of course, something goes awry, and Kei's partner, Yuri, must go into the system after her.

This is a very intelligently written science-fiction story, which also happens to include the requisite helpings of dark humor, excessive violence, and gratuitous cheesecake one always encounters in a good "Dirty Pair" story. Adam Warren also has a great deal of fun with the concept of nanomachines, using them in some truly creative and shocking ways.

Worth the price of admission just for the "harem" scene, which will have you laughing hysterically. Very highly recommended to all manga, anime, and sci-fi fans. Definitely among the best "Dirty Pair" stories ever told.

Adam Warren has done it again
Action, excitement, girls, and guns! I love this manga series, and the newly restored color version is great! The plot actually has some depth (unlike manga and anime like Sailor Moon where one episode is a complete repeat of another) and Kei and Yuri are actually smart, sophisticated, STRAIGHT women instead of stupid, brain-dead lesbians. DIRTY PAIR ROCKS!

What more can go wrong?
What more can go wrong for the protagonist in this novel? Written by a lawyer, according to the cover, the book tells of the man's struggles in prison. Wow! As if being a lawyer isn't hard enough! Seriously, this book is an over-all good read. The background for the story is well depicted. You can almost feel the pain locked away behind the prison's walls. I enjoy prison novels. Maybe it's because they tell of some of humanity's basest sins and some virtues as well. This book is different, yet familiar. The writer brings the reader right into the setting, and the plot twists keep you glued to it. I liked this book and can really recommend it. Just after I read it, an old movie channel played a 1930s Spencer Tracey film, "20,000 Years in Sing Sing." I felt like Doing Dead Time captured a very similar picture of more contemporary prison life. I hope other readers enjoy it as much as I did.

a girl and her grill
I don't cook a lot of fancy, labor-intensive food. I like being imaginative and speedy in the kitchen, and I usually figure I don't need a book that is going to have me go through 40 steps just to cook a pice of chicken. But despite my wariness of cookbooks, I now own all of Karen Brooks' (and her different partners') food and cocktail books. I never thought I'd be such a fan of...cookbooks? Yup. "Dressed to Grill" is as fun to read as it is to use. When it comes to barbecue, women have traditionally taken the roles of preparing side dishes and smiling as they chew charred pieces of red meat. Well, this book makes tending the flames extremely accessible to women, from the basic how-to's and the tips on buying grills to the de-emphasis on meat (and a great low-fat chapter). The snappy writing and graphics that are the trademark of Ms. Brooks' books are present again here. Just broke up with a guy? Look in the "Bonfire of the Miseries" breakup chapter for recipes like Jerk Chicken with Grilled Bananas, Who's Sari Now?, and Chauvinist Pig (all delicious recipes). And for the absolute best version of a classic: Forget Caesar: A Bang-up Cleopatra Salad. The recipe for Campy S'Mores Sundae with toasted marshmallows is super-easy, tasty, and what the authors call "An urban girl's idea of a Girl Scout campfire dessert experience."

Whether you're cooking for one, entertaining friends, or trying to give a guy some tactful advice on how to take barbecue to a whole new level (tell him to try the Hot Girls Spice Rub - the recipe, not a spot in the red-light district) you should own this book. Yeah, being so effusive about a cookbook may seem weird, but only until you read this one.
