Yawn
I have never been a fan of condensed books for the obvious reason that they leave out content and motivation. This book, however, could be shrunk by 3/4 without any real loss. Yes, there is much in-depth case study information here, but the paper could have been much better used by substituting much of it for some harder, theoretical motivation and analytical discussions. The authors are capable of this. Also, despite the painstaking redundent detail and a few regressions, for me the authors fail to place inflation targeting and inflation targeting countries into the greater context of inflationary policies and countries facing inflation. It surprises me that there is no mention of some of the, especially developing countries, where inflation has been a serious problem and where most battles of the future are likely to be fought.

Heavy on the case studies and mildly repetitive.
An easy to read book for people of all levels. It takes the reader through case studies on the various countries which have introduced inflation targeting. This is interesting from a historical perspective, but since inflation targeting really is a very simple concept (announce an inflation target, describe why you aim to hit this target, make it clear how you shall go about achieving this target and at all times be transparent in your pursuit of that target) the book tends to be repetitive. This book simply goes over too many similar regimes and thus cannot help but cover the same points over again. The last chapter is a study of the U.S. (a rare example of a country with very steady inflation which has not introduced an explicit inflation target) with some recommendations on how (and why) it should implement an inflation target. This book is recommended if you want very indepth case studies on the introduction of inflation targeting in countries as different as Sweden, New Zealand, The U.K. and Australia, but if you only need a quick overview of what inflation targeting is then buy a good general Economics textbook and read the section on it.

The Madness of Art: A Guide to Living and Working in Chicago

It's a Shopping Guide!
This "guide to living and working" is also a guide to shopping in Chicago, but the cover wisely avoids the dreaded s-word in an effort to attract wanna-bes of every artistic persuasion. Langer's guide provides lots of contact information for schools, groups, and companies: in short, stuff you can get out of the phone book, as well as a lot of snide commentary, which you can't get out of the phone book. He also interviews some promenent people (the Smashing Pumpkins' D'Arcy, for example), focusing on daft questions about the "Chicago scene." Many pages are given over to questionable "must-haves": because I am a writer, he thinks I might be interested in aspirin, coffee, a dartboard, a vintage bicycle, and a nice place to play pool, in a thinly disguised, not very clever attempt to advertise hip North Side stores and bars. There's a section in back on "where the artists are" which might better have been titled, "where the pretty people hang." Here's a listing Langer didn't include: the Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State, where this book may be best perused but not bought.

Excellent book for visual artists
This is an excellent book if you're looking to live and work in Chicago as an artist.

The chapter called "Where the Artists Are" is a terrific guide to the neighborhoods of Chicago. I collect Chicago guidebooks, and this is by far the BEST look at Chicago's neighborhoods. It is honest and informative. It does tell you where artists tend to clump in Chicago, plus alot of other helpful info. Heck, it actually helped me to decide where I live now.

The section "A cross-section of galleries that every artist should know about" is well-written and even includes a snob rating for each gallery. Although it doesn't list all the galleries in Chicago, it does include alot of the major and minor players. Plus, that snob rating just cracks me up, but it really is incredibly helpful and insightful.

"Getting schooled" has a good listing of art schools (if ya want to take a class in the summer, or any other time). His reviews aren't as informative, but they are still funny and honest. (Look forward to artiwu publishing a more detailed guide to chicago art schools soon.)

The compliation of "Publications and Other Resources" is one of the best and very definitive.

There are also sections for writers, actors, dancers, musicians, and filmmakers. But they don't water down the book. The section on the fine arts is definetely worth the money.

Overall, this book is a pure gem. It has lots of great information for the artist starting out in Chicago. The humorous writing and jam-packed info will make you want to read it. I rate it a 5 out of 5, "An absolute buy."

Mathematical Elements for Computer Graphics
While written over 24 years ago, I was hoping this book would give me an understanding of the mathematical basis (if not the current state-of-the art;) ) of computer graphics. Despite (arguable to many) years of university math courses, I found this volume merely humbling, rather than enlightening. If you are more comfortable with fairly advanced mathematical notation and concepts than most, especially relative to geometry, you may find this book useful. I found it only marginally useful -- primarilly as a reference to some concepts I had previously been exposed. Best of luck.

Solid Graphics Text
Excellent coverage of matrix transformations. Some I had seen elsewhere, some not. This books real strength is the coverage of splines and patches however. Very readable w/ little procedural seggestion, i.e. implementation left to the reader.

Underwhelmed
I have read over 2,200 SF novels in my life thus I claim some degree of expertise in this arena. This novel has potential but lacks depth and brevity. It moves slow with an over abundance of character build up. However, it does drive you to continue. The failing of this novel is in its non-plausable science and abrupt ending that leaves the reader asking the question of...........

Explores a new, interesting "way of life"
The protagonist of "On" lives on a world with an interesting twist that changes everything about it (except human nature, of course). The book is believable, exciting, a little gory here and there, driven by both plot and character. It doesn't have a typical ending, but the ending makes sense when you think about it, and the author's dedication at the end mentions the theme that the ending fits into. A short appendix lays out the science behind this world if you missed the clear info dumps from one of the characters. I liked this book a lot.

4 to 5 stars had there been color!
This is an excellent book with tons of pictures. Foreword by Herb Adams the suspension king. There isn't really too much to say about it except for some great pictures, and it would probably be a ton better had the pictures been in color. Every year car up to the 30th anniversary is shown in this book. There are also a few customs and some of the other cars like the concepts. You won't be dissappointed, but you will with no color. Recommended

Can we have a little color, please!?
This book was pretty well written, but in the 20th century, we all could use a little color to perk up our days. There was a great amount of pictures. . . A LOT OF PICTURES! But absolutely no color--except for the brilliant cover photo. I guess I'm too materialistic.

Caution graphic designers...
I ordered this book because as an emerging graphic desginer, I wanted to know how to set my documents up for print in programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and of course Quark. Although this book is very detailed about the history of printing and how printing works, as well as job estimates for printing, it seems really outdated as far as using your computer for prepress and helping a designer work with a local printer. And the clencher is, it is basically a school textbook. That is what it looks and reads like, unfortunately. However, if you are an artist in any way and are studying art and printing processes and all the different kinds, you might find it somewhat helpful. For those of you creating a brochure in Quark and need information on color processing, stacking, and how to approach your printer to get the job done? This is not the book. Try "Pocketguide to Digital Printing".

Something the wanna-be graphic artists can understand.
This book takes the reader through the right steps to acheive satisfactory results on a press. The knowledge contained in this book will separate the reader from the growing population of half-baked desktop publishers who cause grief to printers, service bureaus, advertising agencies and the like. It can also save the self-publisher hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars caused by bad design and or process.

"Do me and the printing industry a favor, read it!"

Update the software!
As an instructor I felt the book was very good, but the students could not use the software on excel 97 or above. It was really frustrating, and I will not use it next semester.

I think this is an excellent book for chefs to be.
This is an excellent book for chefs to be. It gives in detail how to design a decent menu. But the price I paid for it is way to much. I picked up the book in our school bookstore, Lambton College, in Sarnia, Ontario Canada. It cost me 102.95 plus GST Tax.

Rapists.
Anyone who makes money off of rape, is no better than the rapist himself

Women are in extreme danger because of rape.
I thoroughly applaude this book as it brings to life in a very real fashion not only the horror women go through when they are raped - and murdered, but it also speaks well of the real shock and terror a man goes through when the woman he loves is abducted, raped and murdered. And the thing I liked most about this book was that it was based on real stories. So that it wasn't just another cheap piece of fiction. Finally because the problem of rape is continuing to grow with the advent of internet pornography, I applaude anyone who takes a stand for women by showing just how real and vaunerable they are.
