Between dreanming and Waking
Robert Adams' 'Summer Nights' has for me, been a seminal work in my development as an artist. The images in this book are evocative and powerful, yet plain and quiet. The book format and the sequencing of the images lend well to Mr Adams' style and subject matter. The quiet poetry of his night and evening journeys are a great begining and understanding into Mr Adams' work and ideas.

This is one book that should have been republished many years ago!

Superstitions, a major part of life, are here for the taking
A most unusual book with over 10,000 superstitions based on folklore of the ages. 132 Categores made it easy to find areas of special interest; such as dreams, love affairs and more. Best of all, for most of our superstitions regarding bad luck there is an alternative which insures good luck. And I found one that said "All superstitions come true." What else could one ask for?

Great Resource for 1st Century Judaism
The theory, loudly proclaimed by E.P. Sanders, never sat well with me. He argued that all Judaisms in the first century shared a common core and that all Israel would have a place in the world to come. Well, this is the rabbinic view from much later. But, as Mark Adam Elliott demonstrates with incredible thoroughness in this book, the evidence from texts that actually existed in the first century shows that universalism in Israel was not common. The Essenes and the communities behind the Pseudepigrapha held to the idea of a remnant, that only certain ones would be saved. Different communities had different criteria for getting into the remnant. Elliott's book is more than a defense of a theory about 1st century Judaism, it is an excellent commentary on selected portion from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Pseudepigrapha.

the horseclans continue......
Taking place after a nuclear apocalypse, the swords of the horseclans is a continuation of the story of the High Lord Milo and his horseclans. He and his allies have to face an army comming from the south and face the evil Witchmen (20th century scienctists) once again. The story is a little bloodthirty and is not for the timid. If you get a hold of these books I highly recommend that you read them. Be warned there are a lot more books in this series.

A Synopsis of the Books of Adam and Eve (Early Judaism and Its Literature / Society of Biblical Literature, No. 05)

A unique resource for the specialist
This book compares five major groups of texts of the same pseudepigraphal book. This book is not appropriate for someone who has not read previous works containing or discussing the Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament.

This book does not contain any discussion of the textual problems with the work or discussion of how the work fits into Jewish or Christian literature. This book is purely intended to be source material, from which the reader can choose to draw his or her own conclusions about the work. This synopsis contains Greek, Latin, Armenian, Georgian, and Slavonic manuscripts of the book. There are major textual differences between these, coming from the book having passed through many hands, many of which had their own ideas to share. Additionally, there are differences within each group; the Latin texts are in four subgroups, and differences among them are marked in the book.

The Greek and Latin texts are presented in the original tounge; the Armenian in an English translation; the Georgian in a French translation; and the Slavonic in a German translation. The commentary is entirely in English. Yes, if you do not have a reading knowledge of Fr., Ger., Lat., or Gr., then you miss some of the variant texts. This fact means that this synopsis is not for the casual reader.

It was fascinating, however, to see the problems that a serious scholar of ancient texts must face. It gave me a new understanding of the little footnotes on textual differences that one finds in a modern Bible.

This book successfully does what it sets out to do (give the naked texts with bibliographic references to other studies that do analysis). The fact that this was not what I had expected when I bought it is not the author's fault. I did find that the notations used in the text -- to show differences within a particular language group of texts -- were not always clear and not fully explained. It may well be that they would have been clear for the scholars who are this book's intended audience.

The only great book on Tahiti
This great book has been translated into German and French but has never yet been published in English for general sale. The facsimile edition offered here is excellent and amounts to a rare book. The reasons for the book's excellence are Adams's abilities as a historian, his personal interest in Tahiti (he was himself a Tahitian great chief by adoption), and his timely access to evidence and testimony, especially testimony, while it could still be had.

The Real Deal on Black Folklore
E.C.L. Adams was an interesting fellow. In the 1920s, he won the trust of the Blacks in his area and they told him raw stories filled with their true feelings about racial oppression as well as other aspects of their daily lives. Adams collected these stories into two volumes that are collected here (as well as some additional material)that hold up quite well today. No patronizing of his subjects, stereotyping, nor overexaggerated "Negro dialect" which marred similar collections of this kind of material by White writers. I would recommend this and Zora Neale Hurston's "Mules and Men" and "Every Tounge Got to Confess" for anyone who wants to know the real deal on African-American folklore.

One minor complaint, the editor mentions the existance of some other tales that Adams colected that exist in his papers that do not appear in this collection. Wonder why this stuff wasn't included?

Highly recommended reading for students of Black Studies
Adam Fairclough presents an informative, scholarly, and engaging overview of the significant and invaluable contributions made by African American teachers to the civil rights movement era in Teaching Equality: Black Schools In The Age Of Jim Crow. Fairclough (Professor of American History at the University of East Anglia) explores the development of educational ideals within the black community that culminating with the civil rights movement that ultimately changed the culture and politics of the American landscape -- especially in the southern states. Fairclough uses a broad definition of "teacher" that includes anyone, anywhere, who has taught someone else, anything else that has contributed to opposing a prejudice-based social order of discrimination and devaluation. Teaching Equality is very highly recommended reading for students of Black Studies, the Civil Rights movement, and the history of education in America.
