A superbly presented and invaluable contribution
Eugene Atget (1857-1927) spent almost thirty years photographing details of often inconspicuous Parisian buildings, side streets, cul-de-sacs, and public sculptures. In Focus: Eugene Atget brings together more than 50 of the J. Paul Getty Museum's 295 photographs by Atget, with commentary on each image by associate curator of photographs at the Getty Museum, Gordon Baldwin. Atget's photograph and Baldwin's commentary are enhanced with a chronological overview of Atget's life and an edited transcript of a colloquium on his career. In Focus: Eugene Atget is a superbly presented and invaluable contribution to the history of photography.

19TH CENTURY PARIS PASSIONATELY DOCUMENTED FOR POSTERITY
Eugene Atget (1857-1927) is the undisputed photo-documentarian of 19th century Paris. With studious attention to detail, Atget seemingly photographed every intimate corner of his much-loved city. Leaving the well-known monuments and boulevards to others, Atget instead concentrated on the atmospheric fabric of everyday Paris, photographing shops and window displays, cobbled streets, doorways, stairways, vehicles, churches, amusement parks, street-peddlers and prostitutes.

Unraveling the mystery of Eugène Atget's life and work is easier said than done. Now considered to be one of history's most important photographers, Atget was relatively unknown during his lifetime. Posthumously famous for his photographs, Atget in fact made only a humble living selling his prints to architects, artists, and institutions.

Atget wrote in 1920, "I may say that I have in my possession all of Old Paris." His systematic method of photographing Paris street by street is spellbinding, and the result is a detailed catalogue of 19th century Paris. The result of Eugène Atget's life's work is gathered here in a heartbreakingly beautiful book for lovers of Paris, architecture, and photography.

breathtaking views of Paris in the past
I received this book as a gift because not only do I collect photography books but I also frequently go to Paris because I love the city. This book is full of full page photos of Paris in the past and has a dreamy quality of the day to day events and sites of Paris and the surrounding areas. It's a great collectible book for photography fans and Paris lovers.

Soul Mates
Many biographers of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain have treated Fanny Adams as an after-thought. Some have even treated her as a subject of disdain. Ms. Smith effectively refutes those authors, using Adam's and Chamberlain's letters to one another as her primary source materials.

What emerges is the vision of a strong, educated, ambitious, self-directed, courageous, emotionally-stable and patient woman, who endured every hardship brought to her home by her husband's long career of service to his country.

What also emerges is a more complete picture of our nation's greatest hero. The same man who quietly endured the terrors of war, who courageously accepted an horrific wound, and who was so gracious with a defeated enemy, could become quaintly insecure when dealing with the woman he loved. The stellar academic, warrior and politician was as much of a quivering paramour as any other husband in love.

For Chamberlain fans, this book offers a more human image of the titan. For everyone else, this book offers a touching tribute to the power of love.

The Rest of the Story....
A wonderful book that "fleshes" out the outlines of JLC and Fanny. For years, their lives were painted with a "light brushstroke" yet one felt that had to be more behind these very complex people and their relationship.

The author has painted a very complex picture of these two with all the dark and light hues of the palette. Fanny was not merely JLC's wife, or the Reverend's adopted daughter, but a much more complex individual who could be considered an early feminist.

JLC's inner feelings about service to country and greater good are reflected and help to answer that question of why a college professor in Maine would take it upon himself to defend the country he loved to the extent he did. It is easy to understand why nothing ever again measured up to his experience of leading those men at Gettysburg.

Wonderful, insightful, & hard to put down!
I developed an interest in Chamberlain after reading "The Killer Angels", and had been looking for a good biography of him. Last summer I visited the Chamberlain Museum in Brunswick, Me. and bought this book based on the recommendation of our tour guide. I can't begin to say how wonderful I think this book is. Smith has excellent insight into Victorian character and mores, and transmits that insight to her reader. I've always thought that JLC was about 50 years ahead of his time. After reading this book, I've come to realize that part of his forward thinking might have been a product of his relationship with his remarkable wife. Fannys self sufficient persona was NOT typical of the 19th century; through Smith, the reader comes to realize Fanny was in fact 20th century in much of her thinking. The marriage of such an independent soul with the soul of a such a fair minded, yet fierce, warrior makes for a fascinating read. I read this book into the wee hours of the morning until I finished it, in about 3 days. I never thought I'd read a history book that I just couldn't put down. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

A Practical Pocket-Size Piece on Protection
Since the dawn of time, mankind has been menaced by deadly chemical and biological weapons. This book provides useful information that fits in your pocket (and it makes a great stocking stuffer.) It is simple and easy to understand yet organized and practical. I would have included more information on what to do while sheltering in place (like games for the kids and a bottle of scotch for dad.)

How to save your family from Chem/Bio Terrorism
This is an excellent reference! I bought two copies - one to keep in my car, and one for my wife to keep in her car.

Better than Duct Tape and Plastic
Excellent reference. I now see that there's more to protection against chemical and biological agents than duct tape and plastic over the windows.

A good resource - sometimes preachy
This is a good resource of clear, easy-to-follow, accurate exercise information and the authors, Carol and Mitchell Krucoff, go out of their way to dispel myths of "feeling the burn" as the only way to exercise. I did, however, feel that the tone of the book could get a little pushy (and maybe some readers need that motivation?) and I found that turning me off to the book. I did appreciate that the illustrations used "real life bodies" but always feel that pictures in books are difficult to decipher, particularly for more complicated moves. I was reading the book for the osteoporosis information and felt there were not as many "cautions" as I would like to see in terms of potentially dangerous moves, etc. Also, having several categories of illness lumped together in the same chapter could lead some readers to confusion about which exercises are specifically geared towards them. Valuable information, especially the first chapter on general principles of exercise, but read carefully.

Great Book!
This informative, well-written, well-organized and easy to use book stands heads above the hundreds of health books on the market today and should be read by everyone who is interested improving their well-being or maintaining their good health. Helpful illustrations, specific exercises and clear instructions for doing them. I love this book!

Something for Everyone
Healing Moves is a terrific source book for people who want to improve their health and for those who just want to STAY healthy. The information is thorough, the instructions and illustrations are clear...this is stuff you can really put into practice. Check it out!

Hitchhiker's Companion Original Galaxy Radio Scripts

okay, okay...
I have a copy, but I wouldn't exactly kill for one. I mean, it's nice to have if you're a Hitchhiker fan, but let's face it, reading scripts is a less-than-fascinating experience; much better to actually here the show. On the bright side, there are some humourous directions for the actors, and loads o' facts about recording the series and whatnot. You might as well try to find a copy, but it's not the end of the world if you can't.

This is great!
I've read this before, and I will say that it is a great book to have, especially if you have the Hitchhiker's Trilogy or series, so you can compare it to each other. Highly recommended to all.

Great- simply great
These scripts were the first HHG I have ever read! Unfortunately, I was borrowing them from my friend when my house burned down! If anyone can assist in helping me find a copy to replace the one I was borrowing, PLEASE DO. It will be greatly appreciated.

Good book, but predictable ending.
I enjoyed reading this book, but early on I knew the ending. So once I got to the end I wasn't shocked, but I liked the way the author handled it. Robyn was a good character and she knew her stuff. If you're into the Zodiac aspect, this book is for you.

this book is my favorite in the young adult catagory
This book was really great. I really love books about werewolves and this book was one that I really loved. I wasn't really expecting the ending but it was really cool. This book has all the genres for a horror book: slasher killing, a strange but cool hero, good setting... I love this book, you should definetly read this book!

A Werewolf Terrorizes a Small Town
In the small town of Branton, a savage bloodthirsty cougar is on the loose, killing anyone in its way. First it was the animal keeper at the game farm, and then the high school student, Chrissie Kelly, followed by the hunter who was on its trail. But for two teenagers--Cory Darnell and Holly Parker--these killings mean more than just the random, thoughtless attacks of a cougar. For Cory, it's physical proof of the unaccountable bloody visions that have been plaguing him lately. He can't remember where he's been or what he's done when he blacks out at night, but he remembers the hunt and the kill of all three people vividly. Is he, indeed, responsible for killing his girlfriend and the other two people--or is there something far more sinister happening in Branton? The one person who knows the answer to this is Holly, the lone teen investigator who is out to prove that the cougar is just a cover up for a much larger, smarter creature--a werewolf. But first she must find out who the werewolf is, because after only three deaths, the creature is hardly satiated, and more people are likely to die unless Holly can find and kill it before then.

The ending of "Santa Claws" was definitely exciting, even though I had guessed the secret of the werewolf beforehand. Still it's well worth reading if you're a fan of horror and, especially, of werewolves. As warning, there is some violence, but it's tolerable if you're used to blood and guts and you're older than twelve. The ending did leave a possibility for a sequel, which I would love to see happen. I really enjoyed this book and think a second book would be just as good.

The only thing that bothered me, though, was the front cover and the title of this book--both greatly misrepresented the story. There's very little to do with Christmas except the mention of holiday caroling and decorations at the end of the book, plus the snow. And the creature on the front cover could have been anything, but hardly looked like a wolf of any kind, least of all a werewolf. If I had known "Santa Claws" was about werewolves, I probably would have started it a lot sooner.

Good reference and learning tool, but has some errors
I'm a massage therapist, and we used this book as our Kinesiology book. It has a few errors (mainly in spelling) but the detail of the drawings is great, and you can color in to help you remember if that helps you to learn. Its a great reference!

Essentail addition to any healthcare library
This book is great. I would recommend it to anyone interested in healthcare. Fantastic pictures and drawings and well-planned overall.

Very helpful anatomy guide
As a massage therapy student, i found this book to be a great help in studying anatomy. A page is devoted to each bone/muscle, making for clear, large drawings with brief but direct text on bony landmarks and origin/insertion/action of the muscles, plus miscellaneous information. The book also classifies muscles by movement at the joints, to simplify studying by joint action. All in all, a great study guide for students and reference for the professional.

Khumbu - I like it!
Adam has quite the book on his hands. His description and over all character development are fantastic. The Khumbu Document entraps the reader in a wonderful journey through time and keeps the pace moving. Adam has not only influenced my life in his writing but in his teachings and his love for knowledge. I hope only the best for him.

Qustions are answered and histories discovered in this engaging novel of the lives of two women of different times, connected by a document of unknown origin, that guides each woman towards self-discovery. Let's Go London Map Guide
You definitely want to have this book. It's physically easy to carry in your coat pocket, its concise, and very useful. The map is okay but you will need a more detailed map like "Streetwise
London". Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

Good book for budget travellers
Another popular guide aimed at budget travellers with detailed information on London hotels, sights and restaurants. Also has ideas for day trips and information on Paris for a weekend trip from London.

Fantastic
If there were more stars available I'd give it all there were. We referred to this as 'The Bible" because of the tube map alone.

A Good politics books
This book is very confusing for teenager but once you get into the book one can see how good it really is. Baldwin brings up thought prokving points. His essays are well developed.

One of the 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the Century
I am the original editor of "Notes of a Native Son," which Baldwin, in his foreword to the last edition during his lifetime, said that I forced him to write. It is not widely enough known that a distinguished board appointed by the Modern Library selected "Notes of a Native Son" as #19 of the top 100 Books of the Century.

Clear, moving, inspiring
This book stands out in my mind as one of the most inspiring that I've ever read. Baldwin exposes himself so freely, and what is revealed is a real, flawed, but ultimately very wise human being. His writing style is clear and evocative, chock full of great quotables. Read it!
