The NC Waterfall Hikers Bible
When my photo trip to Yellowstone was cancelled, I was heartbroken. As I was browsing the net looking for an alternate place to vacation (a place closer to our FL home) I came across a site on NC Waterfalls. I then browsed Amazon.com and found this book and liked what I read in the reviews. This book was a real vacation saver! It is extremely specific and it is quite obvious that the author when to an enormous amount of time, trouble and travel to write the perfect waterfall seekers book. Not only does he provide the waterfall locations, the trail lengths and difficulty ratings, but he also gives fantastic photo tips. He organizes the book in area locations so we found hotels in the areas that provided the falls that appealed to us and spent a day or two hiking each region. Out of the 51 falls we attempted to find, we located 49. The 2 we missed were remote and the trails were probably so overgrown that we couldn't find them. The author rates each fall according to a "beauty rating" that he assigns, and in our opinion, he is dead on. When we were running out of vacation days, we stuck mostly to falls that had at least a 5 out of 10. Thanks to his ratings, we didn't waste precious time searching for waterfalls that would be a disappointment. All I have to say about this book is -- excellent job! During our vacation, we spent a few days in PA & NY and looked for a book similar to this one to outline the falls in those states. There was nothing! Once you've had the best, no other book compares.

Incredible resource on NC falls and shooting them...
Kevin outlined everything you need to discover and photograph waterfalls in North Carolina. Compared to other waterfall guides (New Hampshire, California, Tennesse, Michigan, Wisconsin), this book is the standard for which everyone should aim. He included everything you might ask for:

• beauty ratings (helpful when no picture was provided) • directions (including maps) • pictures (wonderful collection) • photograph statistics (camera, film, f-stop, lens) • photo tips (places to shoot, things to avoid)

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in touring North Carolina's waterfalls and particularly interested (like me) in taking pictures of them.

For New Hampshire waterfalls, buy Doreen Bolnick's "Waterfalls of the White Mountains: 30 Hikes to 100 Waterfalls." While not as well suited for photographers, Doreen produced an equally helpful resource to find waterfalls.

Excellent Teaching Methods
I found this book immensely helpful since I was switching from Frontpage to GoLive. GoLive is definitely "industrial strength" and the paradigm of this program is significantly different from Frontpage. This book really helped me understand the logic of the GoLive program. There is a reason for all the pallettes, toolbars and the way the program is laid out. This book really facilitated a painless process in understanding the program...which is absolutely essential in order to take advantage of all the great features of GoLive. The explanation of metatags and how they are used in search engines is very helpful and everything you need to know to easily build them into your site is explained in the book. I definitely recommend Sams Teach Yourself Adobe GoLive 5 for beginners to intermediate professionals...I would consider myself an intermediate website builder.

Sams Teach Yourself Adobe(R) GoLive(R) 5 in 24 Hours
I've read several GoLove books to get a handle on the basics of this exceptional application. GoLive In 24 Hours is the best. It's easy to understand. Puts first things first. And gives one enough information to springboard into creating some pretty compelling web designs. I recommend it highly.

A! Tops!
This is the best Go Live 6 book I have read. It is clear, concise, and get's you up and running quickly. I would reccomend it to anyone!

Clears up the confusion
With all of the tips found in books, in magazines, on TV, etc, a golfer needs help to decide which tips will help, which tips will hurt, and which tips will do nothing. This book is that helper.

The book describes how physical attributes determine how each person is able to swing a golf club. Each body type (leverage, arc, width) is suited to a particular swing. The book explains why using a single model swing to fit all body types is a mistake. I'm primarily a width player, but all of the books and magazines that I read seem to be arc or leverage oriented. Even in my lessons my swing coaches would try to fit me into the leverage player mold. Now having read this book, I understand why some of their advice worked and why some didn't. I'm now better prepared to diagnose my own swing problems. Best of all this book gives every golfer a blueprint for the swing best suited for them and a way to customize that swing.

The explanation aren't always crystal clear, and the authors should have spent a little more effort in describing how the various elements of each swing type feel. If nothing else more pictures in the swing sequences would have greatly enhanced the explanations in the book. However, after experimentation on your own or consulting with a swing coach (ie: take a lesson!), you should be able to figure out what's being described.

I finally feel I know what I should be doing throughout the entire swing and know where to change things based on my ball striking. I'm hitting the ball better than ever, but better yet, when I make a mistake I know why and what to do to fix it! I don't feel like a failure now just because I haven't been able to duplicate everything my swing coaches have suggested based on a "perfect" swing model.

The LAWs of Golf
Excellent book. Suttie, Tomasi, and Adams do a great job explaining how the golf swing really works. Most great teachers would agree with the material presented in this book-It is the only book I have read that dosen't contradict what another book says. I compared the book to Golf My Way, and The Modern Fundamentals of Golf and both correlate with what The LAWs of Golf Teaches. In his book, Hogan writes, the shorter your arc the more quickly you need to get your left hip out of the way." That fits quite nicely with the LAWs Theory. The book also adds to the theory that the golf swing is a chain action, which was proposed by Hogan in his book, by telling how the position of the left foot influences how quickly the energy in your lower body is transfered up through the club. As a tall flexible arc player this book has helped me understand my game for once. Now I know why I have a tendency to come from the outside and have fixed that amazingly quickly with the help of the Laws model. In my opinion the book is a must for every golf enthusiast.

The search is over!
This system is the REAL deal. I picked up this game 2 years ago and have gotten lessons, read every magazine tip, and seen every Golf Channel Acadamey show and have experimented to the point of nearly giving up recently as nothing worked. I felt that I knew what to do, but my body just could not do it consistently. After discovering the proper swing for my WIDTH body type, I took it to the range, not even practicing the set up, and hit the straightest shots imaginable with ease. I highly recommend this book to those players who have limited flexibilty (your shoulder turn is less than 90 degrees). I must, however, agree with some of the other reviewers of the book who accurately note that the way the book is written is fairly poor. The lack of pictures and text that contradicts what the pictures show got me rattled at first, but if you do what the text says, it will work. The benefits of a new game far outweigh the lack of editing.

A bit inconsistent for Kawasaki's normal levels...
Although I am a big fan of Guy, this one was a disappointment compared to the standards I have come to expect from him. The title of book indicates a vast area to cover. But to my disappointment it seemed a bit inconsistent or out focus/unfocused. Maybe like the title.

When all is said and done it has a multitude of cases, quotes and points in the usual Kawasaki style that can prove beneficial, but still not a clear classic.

Highly Recommended!
Guy Kawasaki combines insights from eastern philosophy with practical business advice on how to disrupt the market in favor of your company. Through strategic planning and zest for the game, companies can move in on their competitors' customers, credibility, and profit - and have a lot of fun in the process. This exhilarating book is packed with useful exercises, examples, interviews, and even a sampling of children's literature. We [...] recommend it to executives of big and small companies who want to shake up the marketplace, and to career-minded individuals eager to rise in the ranks and make their companies stronger.

Read this Book, Before Your Competition Does!!!
Guy Kawasaki has written an excellent book with practical applications for every business. Worth a million times the price, I urge you read this book before your competition does. Thanks, Gu

The Shared Heart: Portraits and Stories Celebrating Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Young People

Beautiful, moving book.
This is a beautiful book that I received as a gift from my boyfriend. Anyone will profit from reading it. The stories in it, written by a number of lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth, are honest and very moving. It says to all the people who are still in the closet: wherever you are, you're not alone! And it also shows how gay people are just as diverse, talented, and lovable as straight people anywhere.

A Work of Art
Sometimes a book so special and intimate comes along that it draws the reader off the printed page and into a new possibility for life. Such is the case with "The Shared Heart," a collection of images and essays photographed and compiled by Adam Mastoon, a Massachusetts-based photographer, whose work has been exhibited nationally, and featured in Esquire, Forbes, Spin, and the Village Voice.

The 87-page book offers a series of poignant glimpses at more than 30 young people, all of whom are lesbian, gay or bisexual.

"Meeting and photographing the young people in this book has been a profound experience for me," says Mastoon. "Their fearless commitment to be themselves deeply inspires me."

Each young person's individuality is perfectly captured through the lens of Mastoon, and below each image is a short handwritten essay by the subject, as well as a longer, typewritten one. The attention to detail is evident-everything about this book says "crafted with care," including the young people themselves.

They come from every background. Some are class presidents, others are artists. Some have endured family rejection because of religious beliefs or cultural issues. All of them speak with candor and courage. Their collective testimony amounts to a powerful account of the virtues of bravery and honesty.

A gem. A book which could save lives.
This book is so beautiful that any truly loving human being will be moved and touched forever by it. It will save the lives of teenagers who see it, and every library in America should be required to purchase it. It is simply a wonderful look into real people's souls, dispelling the lies that people have been made to believe until they are afforded an opportunity (such as this book) to see that they have been lied to about gay people.

Building Block for all levels of firefighting.
After studying this well written publication from front to back I can professionally say that all NFPA standards are demonstrated and tactfully explained. All levels of firefighters can use the information in this fine book to build on from "rookie" up to "Chief". The book has easy to read and follow information, and very basic graphics and easy to comprehend diagrams. As an instructor I can not recommend a better textbook for the modern firefighter.

One of the BEST firefighting books out
Im just starting out with my FF1 classes and the book is a lot better then the third editon, more picture, deeper explenations, and most important more topics, the state requres the Essentials of Firefighting 3rd or 4th edition The fourth edition is by far the best, it covers allmost everything you MIGHT encounter on a scene......This is a breat Firefighter book, although it doesnt cover any medical ops it just as good.

Very good
Essentials of Firefighting is one of the books that will make a firefighter's career easier. So much is covered in depth. The chapter's are larger and in greater depth than IFSTA's 3rd edition. New Chapter's including building insrtuction make this book easy to follow. The book does lack Hazardous Materials, Auto Extrication and any Aircraft firefighting infromation. Other than those topics, all grassroots firefighing is covered very well.

Every fire service that I know of uses this book as the core to its training program. This book contains the Firefighter 1 & 2 level knowledge. For those that are more advanced in their careers, you will need to go to IFSTA's job specific books. This book is the "core values" of the fire service that every firefighter needs to know. Even paramedics should at least own this book to understand what firefighters do because they work so close together. IFSTA has really done a quality job with this book. It's too bad that there isn't more rescue, Haz mat and auto ex in this book, but then we'd have a 1500 page book. The medical system has to suffer with huge texts, we don't really need to continue that tradition into the fire service. 700 pages is enough. It would be nice if there were 2 volumes. That way the weight is reduced per book and there can be more information.

If you want to be a firefighter, you need this book. If you are a paramedic or police officer it would be good to know some of the information in this book because at a scene we all work so closely anyway. We need to understand the roles that each of us has and the capabilities of the people we work with. You cannot be in emergency services and not own this book. The information is too valuable.

A Memorable Read
If this is Adam Berlin's first novel, I can only say that we have a lot to look forward to. The book reads like no debut. It is a tight narrative that shows Berlin is a master of the written word. There is nothing wasted here, not a word, not a phrase, not a sentence. Headlock is a well-crafted whirlwind through contemporary America -- the money, the violence, the loss of innocence. But this novel is not simply a good read. It's a heavyweight demanding its place within the best tradition of American literature. Witness this passage from p. 35: "He described the coil, the spring, ready for action as soon as it was touched, how it took on an energy of its own once it was put into play, and Gilmore told us that was how all classical tragedies began. Once the spring was set into motion there was no going back. That was fate. That was life. That was why Antigone never made it out of her play." Thanks to Algonquin and Berlin, the American literary tradition is clearly in good hands.

Great Fiction from the New Young Lion of Literature
Adam Berlin's first novel, Headlock, is a riveting family drama of epic scope and proportion. It is an engrossing story of cousins traveling west to Las Vegas, the famed city of modern literary mythology. On the road trip through the heartland of America, family secrets are revealed, stories are recounted, and impending destinies contemplated. Headlock, above all, is the fascinating portrayal of its protagonist, Odessa (Dess) Rose, who weaves a first person narrative of both current adventure and three generations of Rose family history. Berlin has found a powerful voice in the mercurial Dess, a former college wrestler who describes a life filled with violence, intelligence, physical strength, and family demons. The character of Dess deserves a special place in the pantheon of modern literary figures, as Berlin has created in the personality of Dess a masterful and memorable blend of violence, brooding temperament, and rare intellectual and psychological insight. Gary Rose, the other main character is almost as compelling in contrast, a well-liked inveterate gambler with a winning smile, but who has lost control of his physical body. Headlock is a gripping adventure that explodes across the pages and can not be put down. The second half of the book has the most dramatic tension and palpable suspense as any I've encountered. From the cousins arrival in Las Vegas the reader is kept breathless and on the edge of his or her seat until the startling and unforgettable double denouement. Berlin's writing style is forceful, terse, and uniquely masculine. He captures the essence of a seemly underworld that is alien, fascinating, and at times horrifying to the rest of us "suits". Blackjack and gambling becomes a metaphor for the larger winning and losing in life, and in Berlin's hands, the stakes have never been higher. Berlin's writing style is a special blend of literature and action -- of the literary prowess of a Hemingway or Mailer and the feverish pitch and action of a Ludlum or Clancey. Yet, despite the latter comparisons to recent good story-tellers, make no mistake about this book -- it is not pulp fiction. It is a modern literary masterpiece of the highest intellectual order. This is one of the must read books of the New Millennium. Congratulations to Adam Berlin.

Irresistible
I loved it. At first I thought it was a "guy book" only and that a girl just wouldn't bond to the gambling and wrestling talk. I was wrong. Depending on how you read Headlock, it's either a gambling thriller or a family connection. When you're lost in it, it's both. And more. Adam Berlin's prose makes you feel like you're there, travelling and gambling with Dess and Gary (both wonderfully explained characters), feeling for them all the way through. It's a true page-turner; you need to know what happens next. Not only because of the story, but because you care about the characters and their lives. The dialogue was flawless, it flowed beautifully. Flashbacks of when they were kids really make you understand Dess and Gary better and worry about them more. Headlock was a fabulous read. I'm looking forward to reading another Adam Berlin novel if this is any indication of what I can expect. I think that this is his first novel -- what an impressive one!

combo offer??
This book is a collection of smallish code snippets that don't go into depth, but may be useful for your programming needs if you have very basic PHP knowledge.
If you want a truly indepth cookbook with
full blown practical solutions that you
can reuse in your own applications, then
you must own a copy of the "PHP web development
solutions" book from Wrox.
I won both these books, and i have benefitted from reading the two...

ORA Cookbook Vs. WROX Solutions
I ordered a copy of the "PHP Cookbook ORA", along with a copy of the "Professional PHP 4 web Development Solutions WROX". Upon reading both these books, i thought i should offer a honest review comparing the two:

Both the books were informative in their own right

o The ORA book had small snippets of code based solutions (very similar to the PHP Developers cookbook from Sterling and Andrei) that are very useful for programmers who are confounded with small to medium coding problems. However, there was nothing enterprising about the coverage, that one could not achieve from using a combination of the online docs + mailing lists. Another downside was that i could not find full solutions that i could re-use in my projects.

On the Other hand, i found

o The WROX book offered complete solutions to real world problems - a Simple/advanced CMS (the core of which you can plug into your site), a simple search engine, a classified ads board, and lots of cool creative case study solutions that i could extend to use in my hobby sites. The content was very enterprising and all of the solutions presented are the most popular one's amongst web developers these days. More interesting is that these solutions can be completely re-used and extended into your projects. However, the downside of this book is that you would need to have prior PHP knowledge either picked up from WROX' Professional PHP 4 (as is mentioned as a pre-requisite in the book) or from the Programming PHP ORA, or any another competent professional PHP programming books in the market.

So the bottomline is:

oCare for an appetiser - Pick up the ORA book.
oCare for a full meal - Pick up the Wrox book.

I am posting this same review for both the books (so customers can benefit from it). However, i have ranked the Wrox book, a notch above this one, simply because i wanted a burp:-)

Filled with GREAT examples
This book has been a lifesaver for me. As is the case with all those in the Cookbook series, this book is filled with practical examples. This isn't a tutorial book, but honestly, this book combined with the online docs were all I needed to build my own web site based around PHP. I definitely encourage you to buy this book if you're hoping to learn PHP!

Usmle Step 2 Secrets
an excellent book, I recommend this book to any body who wants to take USMLE STEP 2. it reviews almost every high yeild points needed for this exam. I read other books (first aid step 2, ALS step 2, crush step2 and ....) but this one was the best. if you need only one perfect book go on for this without second thought. good luck.

Excellent
This book is the equivalent of what First Aid was for Step 1. I just took Step 2 and this is the book to have. I just wish I had read it more than once! When combined with a question resource, like NMS, you have the perfect study material. (The NMS questions were a little bit more picky than the actual test by the way, but excellent in scope.)
Secrets is concise and tells you what you need to know for the Boards, giving common clinical scenarios, etc. I highly recommend it!

Just where to start
I'm a foreign graduate from Paraguay. (Mbae'ichapa?)
After 6 years of medical school, you don't know where start to study or review your concepts for the Step 2 exam. This is an excellent book, easy to understand, question-answer form; take my advice and start from this book, keep on mind all the topics describe there, then complete with your school books.
For non-native English speakers, remember to practice to read fast in English for the exam.

For a beautiful, elegant and fun shower, get this book!
This book saved me as I was planning my best friend's wedding shower last month. I've never thrown a shower before and I was in a panic because I wanted it to be fabulous. Thanks to this book, it was. The menus were easy to replicate and the decorations and invitations were fun to make. The to-do lists relieved my anxiety that I was forgetting something. We all had a great time. Our friends said it was the best wedding shower they'd ever been to. My best friend couldn't stop thanking me for throwing such a fun and elegant shower for her. I highly recommend this book!

A Perfect "Day of Beauty" For My Best Friend
My best friend was the Maid of Honor at my July 2000 wedding. She threw the most elegant bridal shower for me, so when she asked me to return the favor this fall, I freaked out. Jen is SO talented when it comes to stuff like parties and cards and decorating, so I did not want her to be disappointed. To add to my anxiety, Jen is a vegetarian, so I wanted the shower to be health-conscious. I think I bought about 4 books on bridal showers and the Maid-of-Honor duties. I ended up using the "Day of Beauty" idea from this book. I made all of the recipes in the section and I even improvised a little by making the Shrimp Spring Rolls, sans Shrimp. I bought a bunch of pedicure, manicure, and facial supplies from Origins, a paraffin wax dip machine from Filene's, and I hired a masseuse to demonstrate how to give a good massage. The party was such a hit and the best part was that we all got to know each other without those silly, embarrassing shower games.

If you're planning a shower, get this book
This is a rich, colorful book filled with great ideas. If you need inspiration, direction or ideas for a unique and memorable wedding shower, this is the book you're looking for. The photographs are lush and the step by step directions for everything from the invitations to the recipes are easy to follow.
