This is classic Alice Thomas Ellis
As an avid reader of her work I always look for her latest when visiting my homeland of England. Imagine my surprise therefore to find this collection of short stories published in 1994 that I had previously been unaware of. In this collection she continues to examine the role of the post feminist woman in British society in short crafted vignettes of life.

It is however her sharp sense of humor and wicked observations of the absurdities of life that I find most appealing.

Although listed as out of print I found new paperback copies at all of the London bookstores which suggested a reprinting that hopefully will soon be available here in the US. When it is I highly recommend it.

Remarkably accessable
This first hand account comprised of journal entries with commentary is a fascinating read and provides tremendous detail of Capt. Cook's voyages. I think that for the general reader with an interest in Cook I would recommend Hough's biography as a primary source with this volume as a supplementary text. The two together will provide an excellent view of the accomplishments and adventures of Cook and his crews.

Memoir of a Vanishing Place
Falls Memories is really more of a collection of short pieces on life in the Western corner of Belfast than a novel or history with any coehsive theme. It is literally things Gerry Adams, President of the political party Sinn Fein, remembers about the neighborhood in which he grew up, or memories of those who lived in the area. There is some attempt to give a brief history and political context for the memories, but these sections are poorly integrated into the narratives about his boyhood adventures, the characters in the area, and the traditions of the Falls. The context pieces sound driven (perhaps appropriately) by anger and frustration while the narratives, even when describing violence or sectarian harassment, have a softer feel to them. Falls Memories is a valuable book, despite these shortcomings. First of all, it chronicles life in an area that has literally been obliterated in the last 25 years. As the Northern Ireland government has torn down unfit housing and replaced it with more sanitary and comfortable abodes they have erased many streets from the map, replacing them with new layouts which meet new security standards and are less emotionally charged with history. Secondly, much of the book deals with day to day occurances which might happen anywhere in the world - young boys sneaking into movies, girls playing jump rope, adults telling stories abuot the "good old days." Falls Memories serves as a reminder that the people affected by the Troubles are not so much different than the rest of us.

If football is about enjoyment, the FA got it wrong!
If you never believed that 90's football was about enjoyment of the masses and had a sneeking suspecion that it had more to do with business then this is the book for you! It neatly dismisses all those long forgotten myths that football is for the fans and replaces it with the notion that football is about the business ethos. It takes a look at power, control and the men in grey suites who are determined to take the game away from the true fans and place it in the hands of the only people who can afford the ticket prices! It also serves the excellent perpous of confirming the fans view of their identity and where it comes from. This will make all football fans realise that you don't have to be a Nick Hornby to care . . . but it helps! If you are one of the few who still care and want to know a bit more about how they are dirtying the beautiful game, get a copy now!

Great for the Firefighter/First Responder
This very information-filled book is jam packed with useful information that all firefighters/first responders will need. From Trauma, medical, Airway Management and Defibrillation to very basic Auto Extrication and Water Rescue this book is complete with all the medical knowledge that a firefighter will need.

We used this book in our first responder training. I found it very frustrating because the book didn't have to waste space for an "ambulance operations" chapter because firefighters don't need that training because we don't drive ambulances nor provide that type of patient care. There is a transition of care section which makes patient transfers easier. The last thing we need to know on the scene is the proper way to transfer care to more advanced care. The only thing this book really lacks is a firefighter's perspective. Certain operations will be done with a number of personnel, we carry at least 4 firefighters per apparatus. The defibrillation chapter makes use of fire service resources, but the others don't seem to. There should be an added chapter of taking care of common firefighter medical emergencies such as treatment for smoke inhalation and respirator hazards, hazardous materials exposure care, etc. It was good that there was an emergency rehab chapter, that is something that too few medical texts have.

There really isn't much difference between this book and the other EMT-B books on the market. There are a few extra chapters that are dedicated for firefighters. Much of the information in this book is almost word for word what is in other texts like "Emergency Care" and "Prehospital Emergency Care", it's probably that they are all made by Brady and that's why. IFSTA is a contributor so that gives this book a unique edge.

A Complete Look at a Very Important Topic
I was disappointed to learn that this manual was being replaced and combined with another book, "Fireground Support Operations". Ventilation is a very important topic that deserves its own book.

This book is a very thorough look at fire service ventilation. The fire behavior chapter provides the reader with the must know information about how fire behaves and reacts to certain circumstances. It expands on the basic information found in books like "Essentials". Horizontal, Vertical and Forced ventilation are all covered in depth. The only problems were that not enough ventilation techniques were taught in the book. There are many that tell what you are to do but leave out how to do it. Maybe that is why this book was combined with the forcible entry manual.

This book is a near-complete look at this topic and all firefighters should know this book's information. This topic is one that saves lives when done properly and costs lives when done improperly.

This was a great book to really get to see what went on in the life of a great American heroine, Abigail Adams. After reading this book to help with a school project on women in history, I thought, "Who was really wearing the pants in the Adams family?"

A Washington Salon - 1880-1910
The book is not intellectually deep, but is most enjoyable. It provides a view of a small American elite representing a transitional society between the late Civil War and early 19th century. It centers on five diverse people who, by chance, formed a unizue Washington social and intellectual salon mostly centering on themselves, but benefitting from each member's extensive contacts in the U.S. and France (to a lesser extent). The five were Henry Adams (descendant of two Presidents), his wife, Clover, John Hay (Secretary to Lincoln and Sec of State at the turn of the century), his wife, and Clarence King, the firs head of the U.S. Geological survey.

Adams and Hay built large homes on the north of Layafette Square which became the center of the salon (the sites are occupied by the Hay Adams Hotel).

The focus is on the personalities and interests of these unique characters, the depiction of life at the heart of our capitol, and references to art and architecture integral to Washington of that era, but which led to a broader influence along the east coast particularly. In a very concrete setting, the author deals with love, tragedy, and the political and intellectual curiosit which dominated these people's lives. None has really survived in the public consciousness, but all played significant roles in their time and deserve this interest in what made their lives.

interesting amateur sleuth
Former TV news anchor Kyle Champion reluctantly accepts the invitation from his old college buddy Matt Kreuger to attend a memorial service for the latter's deceased dad. Actually, the invitation was offered because Matt's sister-in-law Marcia demanded he ask Kyle. She knows Kyle has had some success in solving homicides and Marcia wants Kyle to investigate the death of her father in law, P.J. Though officially P.J. died of a heart attack, Marcia feels his four-decade younger second wife Sorah killed him because she inherits everything in his revised will.

Matt drives the three hours from Minneapolis to the remote "Kreugerland" cabins near Bent Line Lake. There he meets the family he met several years ago when he stayed at the cabins. He also finds Sorah to be quite charming and not at all like a murderous Jezebel. As he unenthusiastically discusses the death with everyone remotely involved, Kyle begins to uncover disturbing discrepancies that makes him wonder if perhaps P.J. was murdered.

THE FOURTH OF JULY WAKE is an interesting amateur sleuth mystery that readers will enjoy because of the depth of the ensemble's secondary characters. In spite of his TV exposure, Kyle remains a charming idealist though he loses some of rosy optimism due to the results of his inquiries. Though why the dominating Marcia would stay as a second fiddle seems stretched, this cozy will delight fans that will wonder along with Kyle whether a homicide occurred and if so did Sorah really murder her elderly spouse?
