Forty Compelling Stories
Forty Individual Stories of warmth and blessing that cover the history and growth of the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgendered movement within the Presbyterian Church (USA). Told from the point of view of those who have lived it, one cannot help but find God's Love and Blessing in each of their lives. All too often, only one side of this complex issue of inclusion is heard, without the fairness of balance. This book makes and excellent attempt at telling the other side. It is non-judgmental, nor is it defensive. The words written and shared here are done so in love.

Cantio nocturna peregrini : a puzzle in seven languages

Goethe's goodies
This is a book that will bring pleasure to polyglots and be a treasure trove of ideas for translators, linguists, and philosophers. Makkai's thesis is that poetry written in languages other than the original must be a creative reinterpretration, not merely a translation, analogous to a musical theme and variations. He calls this "anasemic writing" and in a series of clever, informal and often highly amusing hypothetical Platonic-type dialogues between himself, a 20th-century scholar, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (to whom the book is dedicated and whose poem "Ein Gleiches" and its ninety-six versions in eight different languages are used as examples), he explores the great 18th-century writer's theories of world literature. Following the dialogues is a more technical analysis of anasemic writing, a discussion of modern linguistics and its relation to literary translation, and more multilingual poetry, along with some really beautiful illustrations. Too bad this book is out of print!

A Good Story Book
Whether or not you believe in the ghost stories presented in this story (I do!) it is a great book to read, at least for the story if nothing else. In my home outside of Cape May, I thought this was a good book to read curled up on the couch durning a thunder storm that just blew in from the ocean. Some chilling tales and also some good stories.

Cayman Islands Business Laws

Author: Adam Starchild
Amazon base price: $85.00

Very helpful solid information
It was very useful to finally have access to the current Cayman company and trust legislation. There are lots of summaries of the law available, but the full text of the actual statutes has not been generally available until this book. Now a tax planner can make his own decisions as to what is the best structure, and what legal options exist, and then ask a Cayman firm to implement the decision, instead of relying on high-priced advice from local firms, who often don't convey all of the details that a tax planner prefers to read for himself.

Children Need Heroes
Some quotations from Adam Starchild's wonderful afterword to this book are appropriate:

"Children today are starved for the image of real heroes. Celebrities are not the same thing as heroes. Heroes existed way before celebrities ever did, even though celebrities now outshine heroes in children's consciousness."

"Worshiping celebrities leaves children with a distinctly empty feeling -- it doesn't teach that they'll have to make sacrifices if they want to achieve anything worthwhile. No- talents become celebrities all the time. The result is that people don't seem to care about achievement or talent -- fame is the only objective."

"... Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of traits that instruct and inspire people. A hero does something worth talking about, but a hero goes beyond mere fame or celebrity. The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. If they serve only their own fame, they may be celebrities but not heroes. Heroes are catalysts for change. They create new possibilities. They have a vision, and the skill and charm to implement their vision."

"Heroes may also be fictional. Children may identify with a character because of the values projected. People tend to grow to be like the people that they admire, but if a child never has any heroes what images will he copy? Adults need heroes too, but the need is even more urgent for children because they don't know how to think abstractly. But they can imagine what their hero would do in the circumstances, and it gives them a useful reference point to build abstract thinking skills."

Nightmares between the covers
The Chase is a novel where the psychological plot line is equal to the narrative plot line - as the unnamed student tries to survive in a world of political intrique where he is the hunted not the hunter. Attention to detail - details that are constant varients on preceding detail - build the tension to a stunning climax.

Well written and worth your attention.

Unknown gem
This is an excellent collection of games annotated by one of the top 10 players in the world, Mickey Adams. The games are great, and feature lots of openings that you don't often see in the game collections from the top GMs, but that you see a lot in your own internet games: Benko Gambit, Pirc, Modern, Smith-Morra, Giocuo Piano, Trompowsky, Wade Defense, and a host of Sicilians and Ruy Lopezes. I have found this book to be most useful and entertaining. The annotations are crisp and to the point. They remind me a little of Fischer's annotations, though Adams uses more words than Fischer. Excellent production by Cadogan: crisp, white paper, lots of diagrams, two-column format. In my opinion, this book would be more in demand if it were better known.
