I did not like it much

This book is supposed to train businesspeople who want to communicate in english as a second language, and is not intended for self-study at all, won't do any good if you try to use it as a stand-alone course. Teacher book, guide and CD's are indispensable. It has nice photos and high quality paper, however I find its content rather poor. The number of excecises is low (Some excercises are good), and in general the information is fragmented.

A FISHY TALE
.

There is lots of strongly expressed "messages" in this story. Among them are .... ... Don't think you're too clever ..... Don't be too dissatisfied with your situation.

We are told the fishy facts of life. We are but one of millions and life is very hard and full of dangers.

Using your imagination and acting on you fantasies may take you to very frightening places.

When our little fishy friend takes the trip down the flooded river into the big lake he finds himself faced with "strange monsters of awesome size". He hadn't seen a fisherman's boat before. He becomes very scared and lonely "What use are brains and imagination if you don't have a friend?" His hides away in a tin can to shut out the big bad world.

His escape back to his little pond requires a one in a zillion chance rescue.

Most children and their parents would find the story line of "The Little Fish in a Big Pond" a bit heavy handed. The real saving grace of this book is the illustrations. They are bright, naturalistic and quite appealing.

A Psudo Gardner Tells HIS Tales
The only thing that kept me from giving this book one star is that the first couple of pages taught me about Hybridizing - and why it's wrong - and somewhere in the middle there is information about how the European Community is having an affect on crop variety. The rest of this book is disorganized, and only speaks to the author's own vegetable intrests. From the sound of it, he's only gardened one season (the previous year) and wasn't able to discuss the results of most of his plantings becuase "the season ended early". Well, did you ever think you might have planted the seeds late?!?! This book should really be titled the "John F. Adams failed expiriments at growing Corn, Beans & Fruit Trees."

Iron Rose: A Biography of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy

Lady Longford (and the Frasers) these two authors are NOT.
If your into scholary bios then look somewhere else. This book has a two page bibliography in it with 14 items listed (plus numerous magazines). By far the best source these two authors use is by Mrs. Kennedy herself (Times To Remember).

This book also glorifies Rose too much and paints her as a saint. Sure, she was a saint, but she was also a sinner. Why don't we see that side of her in this book?

The book is far too short as well. Rose Kennedy lived a life far more exciting than what was written in 258 pages. A scholar could easily do a 400 page book on her childhood/early adulthood alone.

In good conscience I cannot reccommend that you buy or even read this book.

James Baldwin: A Biography
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt (Paper) (April, 1995)
Author: David Adams Leeming
Amazon base price: $15.95
Used price: $4.80
Average review score:

Baldwin fan? Read this for the info., not the writing.
I haven't read many biographies, but I have read lots of Baldwin -- both essays and novels. I came away from this book wishing that it was as compelling as its subject -- that Leeming had contributed his insights to the efforts of a writer closer to Baldwin's caliber -- and that the book had the benefit of a better editor. There is a sense that perhaps Leeming reveres Baldwin a bit too much. It's hard to communicate a true sense of intimacy with your subject when he's so high up on a pedestal! Overall, a disappointment.

A Letter from My Father
I don't think I would have known about this book if my father's letter wasn't in it. My Dad, John D. Rice, intrepid radio journalist from Sparta, Wisconsin, died in September, 1991. Sometime in the months following his death, his widow, my mother, became aware that a letter Dad wrote to one of his colleagues on the Wisconsin State Journal in the early forties, had been included in a collection of War Letters published by the Wisconsin State Historical Society.

The quid pro quo for my mother's approving the letter for use in the book, was that she got a copy. I think the letter was written to a Wisconsin State Journal editor named Don Anderson. The subject of the letter was Japanese radio directed at American Servicemen in Alaska where my father was stationed until 1943. John D. said it was pretty dull and corny, because the Nips didn't really understand American culture well enough to produce worthy entertainment.

I read some of the other letters and forgot about the book until about a week ago. My brother told me my Uncle Zel had heard there was such a book and inquired about it. My brother was unaware of the book, but I knew Mom had a copy. Well, the upshot is I arranged to get our copy to my uncle. I wondered whether the hype about The Greatest Generation had given the book a boost. So I checked Amazon dot com. Well, the answer is mixed. Its about 800,000th in the great pantheon of Amazon Books. I don't think thats so hot, but its all relative. It depends on what the LEAST well-rated book on Amazon is.

If you're interested in knowing some of John D.'s history because you remember him from somewhere, write me at mrice@elroynet.com and I'll bring you up to date.

Thanks.

A Manual??
The book is very basic and reflects not too much more than the Workbench software manual. Poor examples and as bad as the original Workbench literature it does not elaborate on ERROR messages neither on the circuit analyses parameters.
If you have any experience in electronics circuits you will conclude that this book is a pile of worthless paper!!

Wannabe!
If you turned this in as your creative writing assignment, you might get a 'B'. You'd expect better from an published author. The cover of the book looks so good... glamorous and cool, a brown haired girl smirks at you while a guy's sprawled body is reflected on her sunglasses... above the epitaph ... 'She's smart. She's fun. She wants to kill you.' Trust me, those words have nothing to do with the story inside. You expect a mystery. You expect a charming, popular and ruthless stranger who comes into Elizabeth's life and takes over, maybe even turning her old friends against her. You expect to wonder 'who is this girl?' and 'Is this really Amanda'? You expect people around 'Amanda' to start mysteriously turning up dead or have near fatal accidents. Well, that isn't in this book. It doesn't deliver. I was not only disappointed, but mad. Once she moves into Elizabeth's house, 'Amanda' doesn't do a thing that is particulary smart or charming or fun, neither does Elizabeth. There is no mystery to it. You know who did what to who right off. Elizabeth is the only one in the dark. It would have been a much better book if Nicholas Adams had lived up to the synopsis and kept what really happened to Amanda a mystery until the end instead of putting it all in the front of the book. It might work for you if you're one of those readers who flips to the back of the book and reads the ending first, but for the rest of you I recommend sticking to Stine or Pike unless you're into collecting book cover art.
