A focused, easy to understand preparatory book
I needed to get this book for my 12 year old daughter. Since she was so young, I was worries that she would not be able to follow the logic needed to comprehend the objective. This book has worked wonders. She picks it up each nite, on her own, and studies a little. I only need to be there to reinforce the books philosophy.

lots of helpful tricks and strategies
This book not only presents the reader with a detailed layout of the SAT, but also treats the SAT in a fun manner. The book always sticks in little tricks and strategies that are an added plus to just knowing the information that is tested by the SAT. I recommend this book to anyone who has a reasonably good score but wants an even better score. I also recommend taking a princeton review class cuz this really helped me raise my score.

Critical Theory Since Plato

Adams presents a useful srvey of critical history.
In Critical Theory Since Plato, Hazard Adams surveys the history of criticsm from Plato through the post-structuralists. Considering the exhaustive nature of his topic, Adams does a good job of presenting a balanced view of the subject. The essays are arranged chronologically, allowing the reader to survey not only a particular author, but the development of critical theory as well. Each essay is prefaced by an introduction by Adams. These introductions are helpful to a newcomer to the subject. A student with no experience working with critical theory, though, may also find it helpful to purchase a critical theory handbook, such as those available by Eagleton. Still, there is no substitute for the original sources, and Adams has compiled a useful, lively textbook. See also Critical Theory Since 1965 by the same author.

Critical Critical Theory
The title says it all. Hazard Adams has compiled a collection of essays, dialogs, excerpts, etc. from Plato to Postmodernism. The selections made could be called the critical pieces of Critical Theory.

I purchased this book to accompany a college level course on Literary Theory, and it served excellently in that capacity. This book is not, however, self-explanatory. You should have some kind of background in theory before diving into this book. The introductions to the book, and to the beginning of each selection are generally enlightening, but still require some basic knowledge of the field. If you haven't had a formal introduction to theory, you may want to purchase a guide, or take a course on it before beginning this book.

However, if you have a good grasp of basic theory, this is an excellent book to help guide you deeper into the field.

This rhyming book is fun to read.
This is a neat book that my 4 year old daughter likes to have read to her. It is fun and quick paced, and the story ends talking about manners. It is a step above the basic Dr. Suess books.

Move over Dr. Suess
Refreshingly funny!! As a father of 3 (2,4,6) this book relates to all my children. They love the ryming humor and I love how it ends with a life lesson. Truly enjoyable! Brilliant! MUST READ!!

Must-have guide for all optical / optoelectronic engineers
A standard and major reference work for all engineers with "difficult" materials to cut and/or polish.

The 2nd edition of the book adds substantial and worthwhile content to the first. Many materials and applications have been added to assist the optical or optoelectronic engineer to avoid 'common pitfalls' when preparing the surfaces of materials for laser, semiconductor and light transmission applications.

The discussion of machine design and development is admirable, ( it shows prototyping right through to the full development of MICROSLICE and MULTIPOL machines) , as is the extreme openenss of language in describing, often empirical, techniques that yielded the best results on cutting and polishing materials (and techniques)that seem all too often deemed in the categories of "proprietary" or "classified" - words which are destined never to help an engineer in need of an unbiased piece of advice.

This book never falls into either of those categories. What higher recommendation can there be for an engineering text ?!

The Truth Be Told
Everyone who has attended a number of Grateful Dead shows has become aware that something "magical" is going on. Those who "get it" are changed for a lifetime. This book is a compliation of social science research - usually as part of a Masters or Doctorate project - into that phenomena. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an academic approach to this magical and mystical experience. Be aware that the format is not in traditional narrative, but more the way scientific papers are presented - nevertheless, anyone who has been "on the bus" should put this in their library and those who are not on the bus, might finally get some understanding of why the Grateful Dead experience is truly transforming.

Reasons we followed the band...
As a Deadhead, this is one of the things I've been waiting for. This is a wonderful collection of papers concerning one of the most influential "bands" in American culture. I recommend this to any Deadhead, and I recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered why we saw as many shows as we did, why we traveled across the country every season, and why we still continue to listen to their music. This should be read by anyone who never understood their sister's, brother's, or child's (make that parent's as well) need to see the shows and be among other Deadheads. This book covers so many facets of the Dead and their fanbase, and each paper is a scholarly piece of academia. Rebecca had such forsight to begin when she did, and I am thankful that she has found so many dedicated Deadheads who have written University thesis papers on the band. Joseph campbell and Jerry Garcia would both be very happy with this work, and I am again very pleased that a book covering this "long, strange trip" has been so wonderfully put together. A true sociological work, this should be considered by any sociology class in every University across the country. Thank you for a real good time.

WARNING: This review is a bit of a sham.
I say that because I'm going from memory - I had a copy of this when it first came out, but when the "Enterprise" premiere rekindled my interest in "Star Trek" a few weeks ago, I couldn't find it. I've ordered another copy, but it's not here yet, so I can only go on the fond memories that prompted me to reorder it.

At any rate, I recall being especially fond of this GN for two reasons: one was that, unlike most of the Trek comic products coming out at the time, it had great art; the other was its nice nostalgic touches, like the appearance of Jamie Finney (from the classic episode "Court Martial") as a Starfleet officer. I'm very much looking forward to having it in my library again.

Impressive!
This is Chris Claremont's tribute to the original Star Trek, with a story that spans the time from Kirk's days on the Farragut to the time period after Star Trek IV. Several favorite old characters return, but this is not simply a two-bit rehash of old stories and characters: Kirk and company "explore strange new worlds;" they "seek out new life and new civilzations." Claremont boldly goes where no one has gone before. Highly recommended.

Simple, clear, exceeds expectations
On paper, a chess bio of a grandmaster authored by the grandmaster's father with the grandmaster's help has all the sad rings of a "puff piece" about it. This book avoids falling into this trap through a simple, unadorned style that makes us feel as though Michael Adams is a person who became a grandmaster, rather than some monolithic genius of chess above common humanity. The book uses games and brief discussion to take us from Adams' childhood early folly at the game up until he breaks through into the GM ranks. We get a sense of prodigy, hard work, and of a supportive dad. Is there much more we need from this type of book?

Amazing!
A wonderful and unique chess journey through Michael Adams career, as told by his father, with all the games annotated by Michael. Many of his first competitive games are here, and you see him make typical mistakes that we all make, when he was 8 and 9 years old. Then you see him improve steadily. It is a marvelous thing to see this type of progression in a book. Most game collections by GMS just have them destroying other GMs. This is the only book I can think of that shows a GMs early games, played when he was a mere mortal. This is not ony very instructive, but somewhere in the book is the transition in play from an intermediate club player to a GM. The lessons are there for you to absorb. It is a beautifully written and annotated book. I think it belongs on everyone's shelf, and that it, along with its sequel, Chess in the Fast Lane, have been seriously overlooked by the masses of chess players. Because of this, you can get each of them cheap used, and I suggest that you snatch them up while this book can still be found. Adams comes across very much as a normal guy, and this book, in addition to its inherent strengths, also gives hope to the aspiring player that with hard work, he can improve! Highly recommended.

A very touching story
The story of John Quincy Adams is hard-to-believe. Congress truly ridiculed this man. I won't tell anymore you have to read it to believe it.

JQA Diaries
John Quincy Adams gave us a gift- the diary he left us. Beginning as a teenager and lasting until his death, what we see here is the spirit of this man who opposed slavery, advocated equal rights in the face of fierce opposition and argued the first civil rights case before the Supreme Court. Here are the words of the man who did so much for us. Read them.

Great for boring meetings
This is a great notebook to take to all those boring meetings with the pointy-haired boss. Unfortunately, many of the comics are repeated on more than one page. They are still funny but it would have been much better to have a new comic for each page.

be warned
Be warned ! I have on, on numerous occasions, been caught out day-dilberting because of these books ! How many times have I been reading a strip, burst into laughter and said "excuse me", I don't know ! Just be careful !
