Great insight into Deans movie career
This is an outstanding book for both avid James Dean fans as well as classic movie buffs. It gives a lot of insight into this enigmatic man who has continued to inspire people and influence movie making, even long after his death. My only disapointment was the fact that the book only shows his three "big" movies; East of Eden, Giant and Rebel Without a Cause. It would have been nice if the authors had included some of his television work and the other movies where he didn't have a lead role. Nonetheless, the book is well worth the price and I highly recommend it.

Excellent overview of Joyce's Works
In my studies of Ulysses, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Dubliners, I found this book to be an extremely handy reference guide. Adams covers thematic concerns, allusions and motivations of Joyce. These brief discussion on each of the works of Joyce include enough information to set the reader in the same direction. Yet, at the same time, Adams keeps each section short enough so that it is manageable for the reader to consult as a quick reference tool. For example, the section on Ulysses is only 45 pages long. It is too bad this book is out of print; something should be done to get it reprinted. This book would be an excellent guide for anyone studying Joyce.

Jane Yolen's Mother Goose Songbook
I was first introduced to this book while student-teaching in a kindergarten classroom. We were studying poetry and Mother Goose. We had a guest speaker (Mother Goose) come visit and she brought with her this book. I was impressed with the book by not only the collection of Mother Goose rhymes, but by the traditional tunes that accompanied them. As I looked more closely at them, I realized they were the same tunes my mother sang to me when she was putting me to bed as a child. I find it priceless to have a collection of what my mother sang to me as she rocked me to sleep. I highly recommend this book!

JQA was his own worst enemy.
His father was disliked, disagreeable & opinionated. According to Paul Nagel, JQA was all this & more. He was deeply neurotic. Yet he is the most eminent man of his time. He could never live up to to the expectations he had set for himself. It is doubtful he knew himself what they were. Mr. Nagel chronicles his life as a student, scholar, legislator, ambassador, Secretary of State & President. Listing President of the United States last is apt since it is by far the least of his accomplishments. Actually it was an abject failure. His youth was spent in Europe as a scholar, student & interpreter for the Russian royal court. This made him highly unsuited to do anything respectable once he returned to America. He became an attorney & hated it. He turned to politics & found he was good at it. Although it would be political suicide to admit it then or even to day, the happiest days of his life appeared to be spent in Europe, speaking French. First, as a teenager in Holland and later as Ambassador to Britain with his English wife, Louisa.
Nagle version of Abigail Adams is quite different from McCollough's version in his book. Whereas she was a loving, selfless, indespensible wife to John Adams, she appears to be a meddling, insensitive, cruel & guilt inducing mother & mother-in-law. We know so much about JQA because he kept a 50 year diary of his life, leaving more information on his life & times than the next eight presidents combined. Highly recommended reading or listening.

John Quincy Adams, A Person History of an Independent Man
After seeing the movie Amistad I was curious about this president who was pretty much passed over in our history books. This Hecht book satisfied all my curiosities plus some I didn't think of. She covers the public and personal lives of JQA. All the public figures of the time, great and near great, American and European, walk through these pages. And, yes, the Amistad story is there. I have limited vision so I save wear and tear on my eyes each day in order to be able to read this great book in bed before I go to sleep. Minor criticism: I have to keep paging back to determine the year of given happenings. The author could have repeated dates a little more generously. Otherwise it would be a five-star!

Journeys Series is good for Intensive English
As an EFL program administrator in Korea, I have chosen and implemented the Journeys series for 1 session of an intensive program for teaching EFL in Korea. The level 1 books are very simplistic, yet interesting enough for false beginners. One of the advantages of Journeys is that it has 4 books for each level, so you can have students focus on one skill for each hour of study. I only wish amazon carried them all! The books are : Listening/Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Grammar. The students and teachers who have used this book have all responded favorably to it. It is also a graded series, still in progress, but you can get level 2 and 3 of some skills already. The nice thing about Journeys is that it's really easy to teach and the directions in the book are clear to the students. Even though level 1 uses simplistic English for beginning learners, it doesn't treat them as idiots, as many beginning textbooks do. Journeys Listening/Speaking is particularly nice, and Journeys Writing is good for students who have done a lot of grammar translation but little actual English writing, because it starts very simply and teaches the basic techniques of English writing. It works well in the EFL environment, and I suspect it would do well in an ESL setting as well.

A Nice Story
This is a good story of two people who have been hurt in previous realtionships. Neither is looking for a long term committment. Fate has other plans for these two. Erica is a conservative women who usually doesn't do one night stands. When her friend Carolyn talks her into it Erica meets Nick Wilson. She doesn't know it at the time but he is the man who hire to decorate his house. Nick is attracted to Erica and can't get her out of his mind.

The story reads well, the characters are believable, the love scenes are hot. This is really a feel good book
