History is not unique
An important book to make history come alive. Unbelievable what Bardach endured. I always thought the special mixture of state-terrorism, inhumanity, and ethnic repression which existed in Nazi-Germany was a unique "accident" of history. Judging from Bardach's book it happened to almost the same extent in Russia. And the scenes in former Yugoslavia also were not far from it. Mankind obviously does not have a learning-curve. I read the book in German and hope it gets translated into Polish and Russian.

Touching tale, well written
I had the great fortune of seeing Mr. Bardach and Ms. Gleeson speak at my university. Bardach briefly related his tale to the room, and they both then discussed the challenges and the joys of writing the book. If memory serves, the talk was given on September 12 or 13, 2001--giving special poignancy to the early passages on the falling of bombs, the fear of invasion, and the family huddled around the radio, fearing what was to come.

Needless to say, I bought the book, and was not disappointed. As other reviewers have pointed out, this is one of those rare non-fiction pieces that reads like a novel: Indeed, it is the occassional recollection that you're reading a memoir that makes it especially gripping. The story was, of course, unbelievably touching in its harrowing and heroic qualities, and the mis-en-texte, facilitated by Ms. Gleeson, put it in a language that is both unpretentiously personal and deeply insightful.

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in this tragic period of world history or merely in the human struggle to survive.

Outstanding Narrative of Human Survival with a Twist
What a great story. I couldn't put the book down. It is a view of WW II and Soviet Terror told from a unique perspective. I was enthralled to read the first hand accurate descriptions of human suffering and maladies. Then to my suprise the Author revealed himself to be one of my professors during Medical School! He never talked about this part of his life during my brief and peripheral association with him, and was a hard but just teacher with glimpses of remarkable human tenderness.

The first hand description of vitamin deficiencies was insightful.

Buy this book and read about human courage and survival

outstanding review for step 3!
I can't say enough good things about this book. Concise, high-yield, easy to read and well-organized. Covered all the important topics that were on my exam. In retrospect, the other books I used (Swanson's family practice review, step 3 made ridiculously simple) paled in comparison.

Fantastic review for Step 3!
Really glad I used this book for Step 3 review. Like most residents, I had very little time or energy to devote to studying for the exam. This book can be read over a few days and contains strictly high-yield info presented in an easy to digest manner. This author really understands the way board examiners think and ask questions and presents the material in a way that is designed to help you pass. I would recommend this book to anyone who is preparing for the exam!

short and very sweet
Super high yield, only book I used and only reason I passed since I had almost no time to study. Not only does this book cover all major topics at a perfect level of depth for a review book, but I learned several points about some of the subspecialties that I never knew, some of which appeared on my exam. Best step 3 review book out there, hands down.

A practical look at dating do's and dont's.
Finally, someone has written a book that is not based on some mystical notion that you will one day know who you are supposed to spend time with and marry. In Ben Young's "Ten Commandments of Dating" he and Dr. Sam Adams look at 10 Commandments of Dating. Some of which are unabashedly politically incorrect. They take an informative and practical look at dating and why many marriages fail. They cover all the bases, from what you should focus on when not dating anyone(get a life and better yourself!) to how to "engage your brain" and not be swept away by emotional or romantic feelings of the relationship. Young and Adams have given us perhaps one of the most applicable books about dating to ever come along. If their advice is taking you can expect healthier and more fulfilling relationships.

FINALLY! Some REAL guidelines for the dating scene!
Finally, REAL stuff, REAL life! I've seen, heard about, read and burned too many relationship books that profess to have the formula for finding true love. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF DATING doesn't mention the aligning of the planets or how to be popular in a chat room. It does, however, share tried and true guidelines for REAL singles who desire REAL relationships. Learning more about setting clear boundaries early on, fighting fairly and recognizing warning signs, (otherwize known as RED FLAGS) lead me to buy extra copies for some of my single friends. We don't have to continue making the same mistakes. This book didn't teach me that I should act a certain way to attract a mate. It encouraged me to continue developing my own interests, respect myself and those I date and lastly to "take it slow, get to know!"

Highly Recommended
As as a college student who is active in the dating community, I say kudos to the authors of this book. They approach dating from a Christian perspective, but remain down to Earth. They speak the language of young people, and make it a thoroughly enjoyable read instead of like reading a VCR manual. All of my friends are waiting in line to borrow my copy, and i've already give several copies away. YOUTH MINISTERS< this is a great resource for leading a Bible study on dating> (check it out, there's a study guide available, too!)

The Gathering of the Sinister Six (Spider-Man)

Author: Adam-Troy Castro
Amazon base price: $6.99
Used price: $70.00

Can't Wait for Part II
The book was a very good read. Unlike other (recent) novels on Spider-Man this one drew on the wealth of background information on the character from his many comic series - without going over board or assuming the reader is aware of every aspect of the Spider-Man mythology.

I also like the fact that this book does not have Venom - this super villian seems to have had a lot of exposure in other books (and that is not to say I don't like the character). But the gathering of the Six has a lot of plots to follow which kept my attention through out the entire book.

Too bad the publisher could not tell me when Parts 2 and 3 will be available. If it is any longer I may have to re-read the book to keep the story fresh in my mind.

But I'll be ready to get the next two instalments.

One of the top Spidey novels in the series.
Spidey has the greatest cast of villians in the comics. Here in this wonderful book by Adam Troy-Castro, the Sinister Six are gathered by a mysterious man who has some kind of secerat plan to destroy Spider-Man. The ending of this book only makes you wonder what plan this will form into. According to more recent information from the publisher, Book Two of this trilogy should be out in late 2000 and Book Three sometime in 2001. I can wait for it.

One book you shouldn't be without.
Mr. Castro does a good job of describing the wild world of Spider-Man. Mysterio makes a fine villian, preforming blackmail and revenge to trying to kill Spidey's wife! And with the Chameleon gathering up the Sininster Six, it's only a matter of time before there's a whole lot of fightin' going on. But there's one question that everyone, me included, is wondering about: Who is Pity???????????

Job well done
Gormly tells his stories as he would telling it to you face to face. Riveting, factual, impressive, this book delivers, but at times seems as he still can't say all that he wants to. He actually skips over ten to thirteen years of his career and then quickly brushes over them in the next chapter. Oddly structed, the book is still easy to read and accomplish in one to three days. The 'Nam experience is certainly the best and well executed, many of the later parts seemed brushed over and vaguely displayed. Check it out, it's factual and to the point, it's an honest read. His rant about terrorism at the end is the best way to put it, his position is always right on.

A superb book from someone who was there to see it all.
Cpt. Gormly tells of his experiences in Vietnam, Grenada, the Achille Lauro incident and other times with the expertise of a true combat veteran. This is an excellent account of the action, as well as the politics, for anyone interested in the history of the SEALS. A story which will captivate anyone who reads it. The best book on the SEALS, from one of the best.

This is a great book.
It takes a special person to make it through the rigors of BUD/S Training alone. Robert Gormly did just that and then went on to have a highly decorated career spanning 29 years in the Navy SEALS. Combat Swimmer is an excellent read for anyone interested in Naval Spec Ops. Gormly offers a captivating story to the reader at all times. His accounts of sitting neck-deep in the canals of the Rung Sat Secret Zone truly make you feel as if you are one of the operators along for the ride with him. His narrative blend of both action and bureaucratic issues give a wide picture of what the SEALS were all about. This is a tough book to put down at night, and I highly recommend it.

Adam Bede

Author: George Eliot

Average review score:

Watch George Eliot invent the modern novel!
ADAM BEDE is a thrilling read, though it may seem hard to believe given the unpromising setting and the stilted way Eliot introduces her story. But after the first few starchy chapters, abruptly, something wonderful happens: she gets wise to herself. It's as if you can see her realize that the upright characters she *thought* she was pinning her story on, dull Dinah and Mr Irwine, aren't really the stuff of which fiction is made -- so she shoves them aside and takes up the flawed characters of her triangle, who resonate with possibility at every turn. Suddenly, miraculously, with almost no warning, all Eliot's amazing gifts as a writer take center stage: Her psychological insight. Her phenomenal wit. The dramatizing genius that allows her, effortlessly, to plot the most intimate narrative developments against the gigantic backdrop of a county-wide feast or funeral. Her fearlessness and surefootedness in picking her way (and ours) through the tangle of social and class relationships of an entire village. In this embarrassment of riches, maybe most rewarding for a reader like me is Eliot's unerring ability to pay off her plots: here, ladies and gentlemen, is a writer who knows how to write the hell out of a climax -- George Eliot's big confrontation scenes never, ever disappoint.

Too, some wizardry seems to keep her narrative touch both incomparably delicate and completely unflinching at the same time. At the heart of ADAM BEDE is a story so sordid I wonder whether it could be broadcast on network TV today, and Eliot tells it without vulgarity but without ever shying away from its ugliness. My most serious criticism of the book is that Eliot didn't quite trust herself enough not to tack an unconvincing (and, worse, uninteresting) happy ending onto her story. But the hair-raising drive of the middle two-thirds of the book is something you'll never forget.

A Great Classic!
Highly recommended for those who loves classic literature. George Elliot beautifully captured the lives of the people in rural English country in the late 18th century and early 19th century. I guarantee you'll fall in love with all the 4 main characters ie. Adam Bede, Hetty Sorrel, Lord Arthur and Dinah Morris before you finish the book. The courting scenes involving Adam Bede and Dinah are both very romantic and honest. George Elliot had a great understanding of human nature which makes the story very believable although it's fiction. ADAM BEDE's a hero in my heart, and this book's a must read for all literature fans.

Classic tale of strength and weakness
George Eliot weaves a simple story of love, suffering, and goodness. While the plot is hardly complex (boy loves girl, another boy gets girl, unhappiness abounds - also reused in Mill on the Floss), the manner in which Eliot develops her characters and their emotions and actions ring as true and resoundingly as a bell. It's so clear, so obvious, but also moving and textured. You feel Adam's absolute love for vain little Hetty, Dinah's calming grace, Arthur's good intentions, Lisbeth's fretting nature. Eliot draws you in with her honest observations of life in a country town, without the background becoming a dominant factor. The near idyllic life the characters lead is a healthy contrast to the town's emotional upheaval.

Adam is an upright, genuine character, and not as perfect as he seems. If his love for Hetty seems unfounded at times, it only serves to highlight how dangerous delusions can be. All the "sinners" are ultimately redeemed by truth - true love, true friends, true promises, and true acceptance. Religion plays a significant part in the novel, but don't let that deter you. It's so much more than that - Adam Bede is truly one of the few works that encompass a world of humanity between two covers.

AB reminded me of Tess of the D'Ubervilles a bit, but there is no villain here, just flawed, honest people in search of unattainable dreams. In the process of trying to get a bit of happiness, they stumble and bleed, but ultimately find something truly worth having. Bittersweetness is Eliot's trademark for good reason.

George Eliot's first full novel is obviously a bit less polished than her later works, but you see the wonderful command she has over language and expression. The book, the people, the story all come alive with her touch. A rare read that has something to say and says it beautifully.

The ULTIMATE manager handbook!
As a former manager this book hits it right on the head! Although it's listed as a 'comedy' book, everything you read is exactly how it is in real life which makes it even more funny!

We have Scott Adams years of experience in corporate America that helped him (and of course Dogbert) fine tune just how managers think...if that is even possible!

The book is hilarious and you'll enjoy reading it as well as the comic strips that relate to each section of the book! A *must* have for any future manager or those who try in vain to understand them!

It doesn't get any better than this!
Scott Adams is a genius, as we all know. What I didn't know is that he could best himself. After reading "The Dilbert Principle" and saying "Right on!" to myself a lot, then reading this book, I find even more enjoyment in Dogbert's handbook. Dogbert is more brutally to the point without frills and direct than much of what was in "The DIlbert Principle." TDP is too serious. DTSMH is a more comfortable read. I love the parts about motivating employees and how management continually seeks to avoid compensating employees and providing empty rewards and trying to make them appear great and sought after. How true! How long do they think a donkey will chase a cardboard carrot anyway?? My only criticism of both books is the repetition of strips within each book. I'll be the first to admit my greed in wanting as much Dilbert as possible

This book rivals anything Stephen King could imagine!
This book is like spending 40 hours a week in hell... which is where I used to work, as a matter of fact. I can't believe I used to sit in my cubicle with a headphone growing out of my ear, staring at blank walls we were not allowed to decorate, reading meaningless memos from our last "Quality Driven Leadership" meeting and wondering how my brainless boss could somehow manage to come up with an idea more idiotic than the last one. And then, to top it all off, I find out that Scott Adams spied on me, wrote a book and I'm not seeing a penny from the royalties! This is hell. Seriously, if you have ever been an incompetent manager -- or have suffered at the hands of one -- this book is a must-read. But be prepared to be horrified. It will be the story of your corporate life...and it's NOT a pretty tale!

Good book but female characters are Barbie dolls
I enjoyed this book as well as Michael Palmer's other books. He does a great job of effectively creating an intricate plot and introducing new characters throughout. What I am tired of, with this and Palmer's other books, are how most (not all, but disproportionately most) of the female characters are described as "tall, slender, attractive, beautiful, etc." Geez, give me a break! I suppose this is a male fantasy, but it ain't real life. I would like to see Palmer include female main characters who are more "normal" looking.

Another great meducal thriller!
This was a great book.. full of suspense right from the start. The only disappointment was the ending. I feel as if I was cheated. The ending leaves the reader hanging. Maybe you need to draw your own conclusions. This shouldn't keep anyone from not reading this book.
Once again, Michael Palmer leads the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions. For the first time, it wasn't until near the end that I finally caught on. This is one of his better book.s

Superb!
An excellent medical drama. My first Michael Palmer book, but certainly not my last. I was very impressed with the characters and how Mr. Palmer portrays them. A word of warning: It is unbelievably hard to put this book down once you've started reading it!

Love is stronger than the facts
Richard Adams' book, The Girl in a Swing is a heart-warming book. It takes place in the east during the 1970's. I learned a good lesson from reading this book. I learned that it doesn't matter who or what someone is, it's what you see in them that matters the most. Alan, a quiet young single Englishman runs his father's China business. With business all over the world, Alan decides that it would be easier as well as cheaper to rite to his customers. He travels to Kopenhavn in hope of finding someone who is able to translate his letters into the many languages he needs. When Alan arrives, he find that a beautiful young Danish lady named Kathe, will be the one who is translating and fixing his letters. They start dating and soon decide to get married. All along Alan keeps his life an open book while Kathe keeps hers a deep mysterious secret. After getting married, Kathe's hidden secrets start to become known by all. I really enjoyed reading this book. Richard Adams has a way with writing. It is so easy to get lost in the book. Because of the complicated vocabulary, including German and Danish, I recommend this book to adults or serious readers. Overall it is a great book, slow at first but once it picks up its hard to put the book down.

Some books won't let you forget them. Even if you want to...
She is haunted by a mystery in her past, he is haunted by her beauty,
I am haunted by the story. For this book holds revolting human evil,
and an incredible, lyrical love - and they are both tied together.

For years after reading it, I could not shake the sensation of horror
that came over me when I thought again of what had been done.
How could anyone do it? And yet, the spell of love that is cast in the
beautiful telling of this story is equally haunting.

This is no average horror story. Readers who find Clive Barker and Dean Koontz
the height of enjoyment may not appreciate the delicacy, and gradual building
of this lovely tale.

The language of this book is nearly poetic in its beauty. It is rich with detail,
complex, and fully convincing. This is a sophisticated piece of work,
and incidentally, nothing like any of Richard Adams other books.
(I have read most of them, since after reading this book, I wanted
to investigate its author.)

This book is a gourmet meal, full of fine ingredients, exquisite flavors,
and subtle blendings and contrasts. It is excellent.

HAUNTINGLY, HEARTBREAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL
If there is one book I will remember my entire life, this is it. Richard Adams spins love and horror into a delicately-woven web of lyrical prose that is guaranteed to break your heart. The story is gossamer-like in its beauty, yet expresses an intensity of horror I have yet to meet in any other book to date. This is a story that will haunt you years after you've finished the final page. It absolutely will not let you alone, although sometimes you may wish it would.

This book was very engaging!!
Lilian Jackson Braun's books always keep my attention. Despite the fact that I am a cat lover and enjoy reading about Koko and Yum Yum, I also enjoy the quality of the book. I enjoy her book's lack of profanity, as well as the way she can turn a simple event in Moose county into the talk of the town. Also her ability to turn Koko and Yum Yum into new and interesting investigators in every book without sounding old. I would reccomend her books to anyone who likes good, clean, mysteries

Funny characters and witty dialogues: a joy to read
I have read all the books of "The Cat who" series and this is the one that gives me the greatest enjoyment of all. Not only did I increase my knowledge of cheese (cheddar used to be the limit of my understanding of cheese variety, now feta and gruyere and brie are added to my dictionary), I also satisfied my curiosity over the identity of the thief who stole Iris Cobb's cookbook, a mystery brought forward from a previous book, in addition to the new mystery that relates a strange, frightened woman, an abusive husband, and a gullible young man with white hair.
All in all it's a delightful read.

Entertaining, and the cats don't talk!
I had seen this cat series around, but never read it, because I (wrongly) assumed that cats talked in the books, and that just wasn't my cup of tea. I was extrememly pleasantly surprised when I read this newest entry and found myself enjoying a very entertaining murder mystery. The cats are pets, and their owner talks to them, but the cats DEFINITELY don't carry on a conversation. it's kind of what you think your own pets might be thinking--he ascribes them with the insight of dropping clues to the mystery. I found myself trying to figure out what town in Michigan this series takes place, and that is another entertaining part of the book. All in all a fun, entertaining read--I've since read three more books in the series. They are somewhat addictive
