This book is straightforward, breaking down each step of the heroic journey, from the hero's birth to apotheosis, using examples from various mythologies/religions to establish the classical pattern used in literature. If you just want to brush up and increase your ability to identify the pattern in literature/pop culture (ie. Aliens movies, The Matrix, Xena, Buffy, Providence...) this is a handy reference and a quick read.

A surpirse indeed. I was actually expecting and anthology of folktales ranging from Paul Bunyan to Casey Jones and Johnny Appleseed etc. Although most of these also appear in the book, the book delves into the historical roots of many of the belief systems of american indians as well. Tracing European, African and Asian beliefs/myths/legends about creation and the development of (wo)mankind makes for fascinating reading. How these belief systems intermingled and adapted to thier new environment and formed a basis for the new "American way of life" - highly recommended reading!

Science may get the science right (or almost). However, human nature being human, whether by natural birth or by scientific engineering, will always bear within it the inherent limits that go with the species. The author hints at this fundamentum with sensitivity and charm.

For those who have read Shogun by James Clavell, you might be surprised to find that it was based upon a true story, the story of Will Adams. This book is an easy read and recounts the adventures of Will Adams, the first non-Japanese Samurai and founder of the Japanese Navy.

I found this book to be informing and enlightening... A hard to put down book. You will find a lot of usefule information here, that will help you in your personal life as well as in other aspects of your life. I have been using the methods described in this boo, for over 6 months and have seen a deffinate improvement on my anxiety and restlessness at night. I think others can easily obtain the same results from this book.

The return of this beautiful book is as inspiring as the book itself. Never having seen the original however makes it hard to compare editions but as I am a BIG Adams fan the work is stunnning, the neat catergories help the beginner to understand Mr Adams and where he is coming from.

I gave this book 4 stars because it is the only one on its subject anywhere. Smith gives a good general history of the Patrol, and fire salvage in general, but many photos are of poor quality, and there are no shots of the Patrol's more recently-purchased trucks.

Smith also writes in an interesting manner.

Every sentence is its own paragraph.

As you can see, this can be a bit annoying.

Despite its shortcomings, the book makes an important contribution to local history, and to the story of firefighting.

Ms.Beck's short stories deal with paranormal subjects such as life after death,the power of meditation,and ESP.I found at times that the writing was awkward and very dull and at other times it was captivating and flowing.The things she wrote about in her book are now commonly known about but at the time her subject matter was surely not broached too often and if written about,not with any factual basis.I've read many paranormal books and her theories seem to agree with what the experts in the field believe today.I think a lot of her wisdom came from travelling to places like India and China and picking up some of their spiritual beliefs.Most of the stuff we call "x-file"type occurences have been explained for years in Eastern religions.A highly recommended book.

Came across this book at a used book store and doubt that it is widely available in the United States; but if you can get your hands on a copy, you won't be disappointed. The author was a butcher by trade, a very rare thing for an officer in the British Army; he joined the war with the hope of fighting the Nazis, but instead was sent to Singapore when it was on the verge of capitulating. He was of course captured and spent the next three years in various Japanese POW camps in southeast Asia. The book is quite well written and the author proves himself to be astute in his description of characters and events. I highly recommend it.

This is an account of a deep, multi-layered and complex relationship between an Englishwoman and a German. Their letters are thought-provoking and heartwarming but also chart the murky path of diplomacy between the wars. Well worth a read
