news on the trilogy
From www.DeCandido.Net

Spider-Man: The Gathering of the Sinister Six by Adam-Troy Castro Quite simply, the best Spider-Man novel ever written. Adam wrote "The Stalking of John Doe" in Untold Tales of Spider-Man, which is one of the ten best Spidey stories ever, and he doesn't disappoint with his first novel-length tale, which is the best use of Mysterio I've ever seen (certainly better than Kevin Smith's overrated twaddle in the Daredevil comic). Adam does right what every Spidey comic lately has done wrong. The rest of this trilogy will be published in 2001 by BP Books, and you should definitely keep an eye out for it. I can't recommend this book strongly enough.

The Unquiet Ghost : Russians Remember Stalin

Almost Great
Hochschild is obviously a talented writer, and he does a great job of tackling a very difficult subject. However, often as he was drawing me in, he would throw in an anti-American non-sequitor, like comparing the people in the Gulag to the homeless in America. Huh? I'm not without compassion, but that is comparing one man's cut finger to another man's cut from the guillotine. Hochschild would be well served to leave his alternative agenda out of this book and focus on the subject at hand. The victims of the Gulag deserve nothing less.

However, if you can ignore these occasional comments which are out of place and inappropriate, The Unquiet Ghost is a solid effort which worth reading.

Am I an expert on this?
Several reviews of this book have splendid remarks and thoroughly profound analyses. But, is the subject of this book, the despotic Joseph Stalin and what is remembered about him, really reaching out to its readers?

This book can abruptly remind us of the generalities of life all over the world (i.e. psychological and physical abuse) when it comes to the terror of Stalin. The life and people around him he was ceaselessly suspect of doesn't necessarily mean it, his terrror, could never happen again, even on the smallest scale. Terror cannot be quantified. No, what Stalin did was and is as pervasive as any cult of personality.

This book decidely opens the door to many perceptions of what Stalin's terror meant, and sadly, still means all over the world. Ever carry your friend or your child on your shoulders as a joke or for fun? A friend of Stalin's did this to him and was later shot. But after this despot died, people mourned and when the new leadership came into being, the terror then manifested itself in the people. They basically reiterated towards the new order all that had held them in complete and utter fear of for more than a generation. This book documents this.

It's a book about how unstable people are who have been victims their whole lives, whether they knew it not, and how they come to realize life for others and themselves. It could be a book about life in general when we think of victims of any type of terror and suppression. Their messages to us could be of caution but on the other hand, of propagation, believing the terror to have some substantiation.

This book is a good read. But it requires a healthy open mind.

If you want to learn about Stalin, read this book!
Every once in a while, you read a book that teaches you so much. This is such a book. I learned so much about Stalin and life in Russia under Stalin. Also you see how Stalin effects life in Russia to this day. This is a great book!

The Way of the Journal: A Journal Therapy Workbook for Healing

Difficult steps towards inner healing
Adams' book provides effective tools for people who are working through difficult life experiences, which may include the full gamut from childhood sexual abuse to living with AIDS. This workbook is intended to help the therapist work with the client to access hidden feelings or agendas that might otherwise go unnoticed, thereby accelerating the healing process. Many of the ideas employed in the workbook are modifications of Ira Progoff's journal writing process. Adams offers several creative ideas to help one get started and feel safe as he/she sits before a blank page for the first time. The journal writing exercises are broken down into ten days with exercises that begin with sentence stems, clustering, alpha poems, character sketches, dialogues and finish with more difficult writing exercises such as free writing and journal dialogue. Adams also offers suggestions for when to use exercises that would help them jump start the journaling process and get to the crux of one's feelings when moving through difficult issues or life experiences. I have used several of the techniques and exercises offered, taking the time to access and reflect upon the experience later. I found this approach very useful for uncovering feelings that I was not aware of while writing.

Hard work made rewarding.
This workbook offers extensive exercises into the depths of journaling as healing therapy. As the life blood of The Center for Journal Therapy and a national expert as well as trainer in journal work, the author has "been there" and you know it after working with this book. Necessary work whether you are the healer or the healee.

THE "starter" book for anyone new to journaling-as-therapy
This is the book that got me started 5 1/2 years ago. I had been looking for a way to use my attraction to writing as a "way in" to my ongoing emotional process. This is the book that literally fell off the shelf into my lap. Filled with exercises that can be done over a two-week period, I blitzed through them all in two days. I was on my way and haven't stopped since. Writing has become my primary tool for self-help, comfort, inspiration, and connection.

The exercises in Way of the Journal are designed to help the reader (and journaler) identify which forms are of most direct benefit. Some people respond best to Alphapoems, others to the Five-Minute Sprint. Each structure is presented with the opportunity to experience it as well as to evaluate its effectiveness for the reader/writer. By the end, you have a clear understanding of what is and is not helpful to you, the individual.

In Way of the Journal, Adams taught me about containment. In process writing, I had been afraid of the intensity of my own emotions, afraid the writing would go too deep, leave me undone. Way of the Journal taught me to "dive deep and surface," to come up for air at regular intervals. And also to frame the emotional content of my writing within a structure that felt safer than free writing.

If you are just starting, this is the one to buy. If you need some exercises to "jump start" your writing, this is a great toolbox. If you want a list of outstanding references, check out the Bibliography.

Practical, well-researched, easy to use, an excellent reference for writers at any stage of development is their use of writing-as-process.

With a Gem-Like Flame: A Novel of Venice and a Lost Masterpiece
Published in Hardcover by Carroll & Graf (10 July, 2001)
Author: David Adams Cleveland
Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

Excellent book - but I COULD be biased
After having this book recommended to me by a friend, I was amazed at the book's artistic sophistication - of course, the art books layering the coffee table at their house and the various art pieces around the house DID lead me to believe he was in fact a conossieur of art. this book is excellent - I would recommend it to ANYONE looking for a good historical art fiction book :)

Not another art-crime detective novel
When I tell you that this book revolves around a long-thought-lost Raphael painting, and one man's attempt to buy it and discover its secrets, not necessarily in that order, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you know what you're in for -- another art-crime detective novel. But you'd be wrong and, like me, pleasantly surprised. For this book stresses the art above the crime, and is far more about the man on its trail, than the twists in the trail. And the lost Raphael Madonna is so lovingly described you know why he becomes obsessed. And there's a fair bit of raunchy sex, too, with a woman he meets and enlists, and you can see why he'd want her as well. Along with the art and the sex there's Venice, oh and they eat ice cream - what more can you ask for? The prose style hits a few purple patches at the start, but soon settles down, with some fine business around our hero's mental state and life view. He's an odd, but believable, cove, who's sensitive to art but a bit of a bastard, and more than somewhat of a cynic. You'll care, I think, and be moved to visit Venice, eat ice cream, and...well, the rest's up to you. Historical note: this novel mentions that the famous and swanky Hotel Bauer Grunwald was the Nazi's hotel of choice during WWII and that the Gestapo used it for torturing. I assume that this is an historical fact, but it's not mentioned on their web-page, funnily enough.

"Gem-Like Flame" Is a Gem
Though this is nominally a mystery novel, it really is a tour de force of erudition, diabolical intrigue, raunchiness and sexiness. One need not be knowledgable about the art world--which this reviewer certainly is not--to be swept up in David Adams Cleveland's tour through the art and architecture of Renaissance Venice and his portrayal of the international cast of eccentrics and evildoers (dating back to Nazi Germany) who would own Venice's treasures. As a writer, Cleveland deploys with equal facility the elevated prose of the art world and the grittier language of the back channels of Venice. It adds up to fast and riveting reading.

Adams Streetwise Complete Business Plan: Writing a Business Plan Has Never Been Easier! (Adams Streetwise Series)
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (October, 1998)
Author: Bob Adams
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Easy use
This book is for a start up small business. Easy, walk through, step by step planning. Good conservative insights of what an investor or bank would be looking for. Favors the service industry.

It is designed to provide an annual plan ... not a five year plan. There is little in the book for advice in an ongoing buisness.

The verbage, however, is useful for any business plan.

Good, Simple Guide
This is an excellent book that will walk you through the process of writing your business plan. It covers all of the major sections of creating a business plan including Executive Summary, Market Analysis, Competitive Analysis, Strategy, Sales and Marketing, and so on. For each area, it asks clear questions, offers guidance to answering them, and offers different examples and formats that could be appropriate for different types of businesses. This is also one of the only business planning books that offers help with the financials!

Also, the book is well laid out and organized. It can be easily skimmed or read cover-to-cover with the major points highlighted well with excellent graphics. The sample business plans are very simple but concise and well written. Though they are not "real" examples, they can help provide guidance and get the juices flowing. Do not expect the book to make you a master of business planning, but as a tool to get started it is excellent. Furthermore, it can help you get thinking strategically and to get you asking yourself the right questions.

The only real negative about the book is that it does not tell you what types of formats or plans are appropriate for different types of businesses, and different types of financing.

Excellent Step-by-Step Guide for Writing a Winning Plan!
I am a very proficient writer who found the task of writing a business plan for my consulting practice overwhelming. I knew what I needed to say, yet getting that perfect concise wording proved more than a notion. After reviewing several business plan "how-to" books, I found that only Bob Adams has made writing a first-rate business plan painless and pleasurable.

Whether a start-up or existing business, Bob has done the "scratch work" for each section of your plan and provided a wide variety of pre-written text options for you to tailor to your specific situation. In addition, he walks you through every step of creating those much scrutinized financial documents, item by item, giving formulas when necessary so that nothing is omitted or misunderstood.

It has been 18 monnths since I used Bob's book to construct my initial business plan. The results was a "living" document that has served me better than I ever anticipated.

Alice Adams
Published in Hardcover by Indypublish.Com (December, 2001)
Author: Booth Tarkington
Amazon base price: $30.75
Average review score:

Excellent Tarkington Novel
One of the better Tarkington tales I've read. An upbeat and at times humorous story about a middle class family and their two early 20-year-old children ( one boy and one girl ). The girl, Alice Adams, is the focus of the story, as she struggles to be liked by the town's society folks. She doesn't have the social prestige nor the money to attract many beaus.

This leads to turmoil, and Mrs. Adams tells her husband to leave the mediocre paying job he's had all his life to start his own company so they can be rich and pay their children "advantages". He does this, after many trepidations, but the basis of his newfound business is a stolen glue formula from his previous employer. This ultimately leads to his demise.

There is a bit more to this story, but all in all, it is a story of class envy, snobbery, and greed. Tarkington's main point, however, seems to be that every dark tunnel of life ultimately has some other exit that inevatibly lead to light -- as even in the Adams's darkest hour their was hope yet.

Very cute
Alice Adams was funny and definitely some good quality writing. At first I thought it might be too old-fashioned since it was written in the early 1900's, but when I read it I was able to compare Alice's desire to be popular to teenage girls today. My only negative thought about this book is that some characters especially the mother, repeated things a lot. The mother had several lines that she said at least 5 times throughout the book, and that was somewhat annoying. Otherwise the book was great!

ALICE ADAMS
Booth Tarkington is one of my favorite authors. Noone captures the spirit of the person better than he does. The way he makes Alice Adams come alive makes me want to be there and meet this wonderful young lady. If an author can make me want to do that, he is excellent in my book.
The movie ending is the opposite of the book ending, which disappointed me, because I wanted it to be true to the book. Nevertheless, I also wanted Alice to have her dreams come true. If you really absorb yourself in the book, however, you will see that her dream DOES come true, just not necessarily the way you want it to.
There is also the beautiful way he paints the whole family into the book. I won't give it away, but you will see the intricacies woven in.
I found myself totally absorbed in the story and couldn't stop reading it.
Please read this book! You will love it!

My Name Is Caroline

Author: Caroline Miller

Average review score:

Definate read
What an amazing book, I read it last summer and its contents are still with me.Caroline is amazingly honest and open about her experiences, a recommendation for anyone, particularly those who struggle to understand eating disorders.

There Is Hope For Bulimics
Trying to find books dealing with bulimia is tough. Atleast books that are up to date. My Name Is Caroline is a wonderful book for anyone who is/was bulimic. She never tried to hide any of her feelings in this book. You understand and sympathize with her. She is the typical/textbook bulimic. Upper-middle class, perfectionist, controlling parents... She shows you that there is hope and that you don't have to live your life like this.

Not just for bulimics
Ms. Miller gives us an honest and humble account of her struggle with bulimia. Not just for bulimics, this book offers insight into emotional attachments one may have to eating and food. It is truly an interesting and easy to read story. Keep this one on hand to reread when you need encouragement or have lost sight of your ultimate goal of staying healthy and happy.

Sometimes I Think I Hear My Name: A Novel
Published in Hardcover by Random House (Merchandising) (February, 1982)
Authors: Avi and Jeanette Adams
Amazon base price: $9.95

one of the best
A wonderful novel by Avi. It has the comedy, horror and drama of all Avi's books roled into one. Not only kids but teens and adults would love this book. Everyone has one person in the book that they can relate to. Weather it be Conrad, Nancy or even the parents. This is definitly one of the better books by Avi.

Good book!
I read this book as a child and it had a profound effect on the way I view my relationship's with others. This is a great book for people of any age who would like to read a good story about what happens in relationships.

It tells the truth about relationship between family.
This story tells the truth about relationships between people, especially such intimate people as family or friends. When I first picked up this book, I felt quite the same as Conrad about having divorced parents. It gave more and more ideas about why I don't trust people easily. Because "lies"make life complicated. Some people say that lying can do good sometime. But in fact, it doesn't solve the problem at all. How can we tell what is genuine and what is fake if we conceal true feelings? I had fun reading this book, not only because it's easy for me to read but also it gives me much inspiration about dealing with my family life.

Streetwise Internet Business Plan: Create a Compelling Plan for Your .Com Business That Will Get It Financed, and Lead It to Success (Adams Streetwise Series)
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (June, 2001)
Author: Robert Weinberg
Amazon base price: $13.97
List price: $19.95 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Not serious enough or detailed enough
This book has a lot of unique advice and information on starting up a company and creating an entire business plan, for either an outside investor, just a family member, or internal use only. However, it was not really focused on Dot Com companies like I hoped, and the tone of the book was much too joking for my liking. I like the Dummies books in general, which also offer jokes, but the author went a little overboard here. Too much of the text is fluff, which wastes time while reading each section. Also, I would have preferred serious and real life business plan examples in the appendix. Like I said, some of the advice is really useful when you find it, and it is written in a very easy to read by anyone manner, which might be helpful for some. I just expected a lot more judging by the reviews here.

StreetSmart Internet Planning
For those of us who are street smart when it comes to entrepreneurship.

A MUST READ for anyone revising their business plan
Whether for the entrepreneur or the established business, this is THE book to use when revising a business plan. Weinberg hits the mark again and again, and does so in a way that makes the reader feel he is speaking with an old friend - bad jokes and all. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know.

Toilet Learning: The Picture Book Technique for Children and Parents

Thanks...but no thanks
First, Somewhere on Amazon.com I read that the pictures in this book are FULL COLOR. They are NOT. I did not find this book helpful at all as far as showing the pictures to my son while he sits on the toilet. He has no interest in looking at these cartoon people. I've never seen a kid have less of an interest in anything in my life.

MY CHILD'S FAVORITE BOOK
This book immediately became my little boy's favorite book. "Look, Mommy," he said with a big smile. "It's about me!" After a few days of looking at the charming, colorful illustrations in Part 2 (the book's children's section), designed by experts to help children learn about their bodily functions, and of having the book's cute story read to him, he let me know that he was ready to go to the bathroom "just like a grownup." I couldn't believe how soon he was using the toilet by himself. The whole process was amazingly hassle-free. I found Part 1 of the book (the section for parents, which contains complete information about the psychology and physiology of "toilet learning") fascinating. In fact, the relaxed, patient attitude Part 1 recommends has carried over to every other area of my parenting. There's a banner that runs across the upper-right-hand corner of the book's front cover that reads, "The classic bestseller." I can certainly see why.

This book made me a better parent--and my child diaper free
My daughter loved this book. She asked for it every day and now she is diaper free. I found the parent section highly informative. IT MADE ME A BETTER PARENT. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
