Spike.Good. What's this?
Spike Lee is usually brought up when people are talking about arrogant behavior. But in this book, he shows how basketball has changed over the years. I play and follow basketball and I thought this book was great. If you like basketball, professional sports, or Spike Lee, this is a book for you.

Spike strikes again!!
By and far the best book I have ever read. The content was not the most challenging but Spike Lee managed to tell his life story and intertwine it with the glory of the 70's New York Knicks teams and even inform the reader of his early cinematic musings. A great book for any Knick fan, Spike Lee fan, or general avid reader. I absolutely loved reading this memoir because it gave in depth information on so many facets of life important to Spike Lee: family, basketball, cinema. A definite must read, if only for the reason to see why Spike Lee is so emphatic about his Knicks.

Excellent book
Even though I'm not a New York Knicks fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Spike Lee, for all the movies he made, I enjoyed his foray into the world of being an author. This book mixes his life from the time he was a child to the time he was an adult with memories of his beloved Knicks, past and present. It was cool to hear about Monroe,Barnett,DeBusschere,Reed,Frazier,Russell (Cazzie, not Bill, but he mentions Bill too I think) and others as well. He also talks about stars of previous eras and comparing them to ones in more current eras. It's really two books in one, combining his life (an autobiography) with his love of the Knicks. We get to learn about both subjects.

A Biased Viewpoint
Moss gives a good overview of many alternative treatments although the book is no longer current. My main criticism is that he is obviously biased in favor of alternative medicine. A search of the internet for information on the Gerson Diet, for instance, reveals a much more negative view of this treatment's effectiveness.

A Serious Effort To Discuss A Controversial Subject
Ralph Moss Presents us with a fairly serious discussion of various non-toxic cancer treatments. Each chapter is followed by a list of references.

The book is dedicated to Linus Pauling who is known partly for his advocacy of Vitamin C. The treatments described vary from certain vitamin, mineral, herb and diet therapies to enzyme therapy and electric therapy. In my opinion the most interesting chapter in the book is the one which explains the Gerson Diet.

One of the more promising new treatments for prostate cancer, PC Spes, is not mentioned although a full chapter is devoted to Chinese herbs.

This book will be of value to those who wish to know more about alternative cancer treatments. It is not, however, a comprehensive guide to the field.

full of "good medicine"
I first encountered this book about 3 years ago when cancer was first diagnosed in my grandmother. We all sought every avenue for her so she could make an educated decision for her treatment. She finally decided upon convention chemo but she also supplemented her diet with a number of herbs and nutritional supplements. I am pleased to say she is still very much with us. About that time, in our on-line searches we came accross a site, iHerb that not only had the most up-to-date alternative supplements, but also had information which coroborrated Moss' explanations of these alternatives. We have continued with iHerb for our supplements and vitamins are are quite pleased with their product choices and service. Remember, there are many alternatives for cancer treatment. Do your research.

revenge
The bad guys killed a man but they should have killed his son too. But, because they did not, that son took up the vengence trail and vowed he would live until the day those killers were dead. A very good story, fun and lots of good cowboy stuff.

A GOOD WESTERN NOVEL RECOMMENDED BY "THE VIRGINIAN"!
After "Autumn of The Gun", "Border Empire" was a welcome return to the style of writing that makes Ralph Compton a good western writer.

Actually, this book is equal to the first two Nathan Stone novels. The only drawback of the book is the small part of Wes Stone's dog; a storyline that I enjoyed in the Nathan Stone books, which showcased a larger part for the two dogs.

I also recognized James Drury's review of the book though he chose not to identify himself. His stamp of approval is always good enough for me. For the one or two people who might not recognize his name, he played "The Virginian" on Television from 1962 to 1971 and made it impossible for me to watch anyone else play that part, including Gary Cooper.

A great, old fashioned western
A great book, typical of Compton! My only complaint is that he wasn't up on his clothing details to fit the historic old west, but that doesn't take away from the story. If you want the same type of story as Compton, but more accurate in details, read Kirby Jonas, whom critics call the New Louis L'Amour. He is neck and neck with L'Amour and Compton in every way!

Even if you seen the movie; read this book.
This is a very fast read. I loved the movie and like the book. It covers some areas that are not in the movie (would have just slowed the movie down). This book is well written for a moive spin-off. It would be a great intro book for someones entry into SciFi. A great book for the beach.

ballah ballah ballah
like too many novels based on movies [as opposed to movies based on novels], this rendition tries to fill in, for no apparent reason, completely irrelevant details. I hate to say it, but wow...the movie is much better! If you have access to a DVD player, watch the ENHANCED version of the movie, as it clarifies in about 9 extra minutes of footage, so many plot-idiocies of the theater and VHS release. The book is ok, but not excellent, hence, 4 *'s.

For sheer entertainment value . . .
. . . and a great mind candy beach read for those lazy days on vacation, strap yourself in and prepare for impact! With scenes not in the movie(or will they be in the special edition DVD out soon?) the novelisation of the excellent alien invasion disaster epic is surprisingly well done for this type of spin-off. Stephen Molstad transposes the film characters into print very well in a cinematic style yet painting a more human picture of a cardboard character in places! This novel is also a good introduction for young adults to the world of'adult'fiction, in my view. Great if you want a good, easy-reading book with a bit of dramatic impact, also check out SILENT ZONE, an interesting prequel.

Mother Courage and her dead children
I found this play, although interesting, to fully satisfy the alienation that Brecht intended to place upon his audience. It was somehow very difficult to feel any really emotion except disdain, and perhaps hatred, towards Mother Courage herself, and this was not helped by her continual hipocracy and mecurial nature. I would have prefered something perhaps slightly more aimed at providing a satisfying read (or show) for the audience, and somehow found "Mother Courage" rather depressing and horrid. She is a symbol for everything wrong with the world and I hope that I never come across anyone of similar moral or ethical values.

Response to Noah Lambert's review
Brecht doesn't want emotion because that is Brechtian theater. He thought that in order for a play to invoke social change, it needed to be clear to the audience, that the audience needed to learn something. Emotions, Brecht felt, clog the mind and only feed the brain sentiment, not rational thought. Mother Courage and Her Children is, quite obviously, an anti-war play. Brecht wants you to see that war makes criminals out of everyone, even mothers. He wants you to love Mother Courage while you hate her so that the emotion is cancelled out and you are only left with the thoughts of her actions and why they were wrong. If you want a play to read or perform that is challenging, amazing, and intellectual all at once, this is the way to go. I performed this and I was forever changed.

Go ahead and feel
Saying that Brecht didn't want his plays to evoke an emotional response is an extreme oversimplification of his theories. He just didn't want the emotional response to overwhelm the intellectual response and remove the audience's capacity to judge the work objectively. In this play, we have a heroine who is not a heroine. We understand her, but we never empathize with her. Consequently, the interdependence of war and economy is illuminated without making the reader wallow in excessive emotion. Yes, we do feel strongly when Kattrin is beathing her drum, but that feeling is not what the audience leaves with at the end of the play.

suffering
The text does not remotely fill the entire page to lengthen the book and suggest a happier price. Sun Pin's addition is severely garbled because the original text was damaged and it's contadictory. The most likely reason that Sun Pin's methods were forgotten and preserved only in a tomb was because (GEE GOLLY) people believed it wasn't worth reading. The commentary uses the word obvious extremely often among various other uneeded lengthening exercises. The author describes himself as an imaginative entrepenuer.(Sun Tzu flirts with perfection)

Sun Tzu and Sun Pin are timeless
The Art of War is the oldest and best military treatise this world has seen. It is amazing how Sun Tzu can talk about strategy and warfare in thirteen short chapters. His book is just the best about competition and strategy. And now we get to Sun Pin, the military strategist. I have awesome respect for him. He was betrayed and mutilated by his best friend, and still, he survived. He defeated his nemesis in a great strategic way that Sun Tzu would have mostly likely done. These two are the best and if they were in this world today, they would won every war that we fight, by their ability to adapt. If you want to get Ancient Strategy and Chinese Culture, get this book.

Excellent
The publishing of both Sun Tzu's and Sun Pin's works together makes for a valuable purchase. I've found that this translation is also quite easy to follow, and the comments assist with interpretation. These works represent awesome insights into the nature of warfare.

Worked for me
In reading this book, I can see how people with even limited helo experience could find it beneath them. It covers the very basics and some advanced manuevers, but is nothing that you can't learn from a flight instructor. When I read it, I was 14 and just becoming interested in helos. I am now 16 and have recently re-read it and found it to be less comprehensive than information gleaned from free sources; ie the internet or library. However, if you are interested in helos but don't know many specifics, it is a good book and an easy read.

Informative, well-written, and an all-around fun book
I read this book before I started my helicopter training just about two years ago. Since then, I have bought and read just about every book about rotary-wing aircraft that I can get my hands on. This book is fundamental in nature, but fairly complete none the less and an absolute joy to read. I recently read it again and loved it more than when I first picked it up. Of all the helicopter books I have read this one is still by far my favorite.

This book is just great!
I am a student pilot in Switzerland. This book gave me a lot of information on helicopter flying. More than that, it thought me what is essential to know and to remember when flying. If you look for a very technical book, you will be certainly disappointed because the autor does not want to overload the subject with graphs and calculations. But the book is breathtaking for any reader interested in helicopters... (sorry for my english...)

A good start for understanding Afghanistan
Prof Magnus, a former thesis advisor of mine, coauthored this interesting tome on how Afhghanistan has come to be such a troubled region. An excellent overview of the geography, religions, linguistic differences, and political development is discussed, which adds considerable understanding to the present situation, and likewise provides insight on how any post-Taleban regime will cope based on these differences. The historical timeline provided throughout the book, to include a concise timeline in the appendix is invaluable standing by itself. I did think the book disjointed in places and somewhat difficult to follow, despite my knowledge of the area.
Magnus had a long career actually working in Afghanistan, and likewise followed this country's political environment after the Soviet invasion: His contacts (as noted in the numerous interviews utilized as sources throughout the book) provide an unusually close to home point of view on a number of issues.
While written prior to the horrific events of 11 Sep 01, Prof Magnus sagely predicted the role Zahir Shah would play in reconstituting any new government in a post-Taleban Afghanistan. Undoubtedly this book will play a key role in the understanding of the tumultuous politics which plagues this multi-ethnic and multi-confessional region.

Invaluable insights into Afghanistan's political position
In Afghanistan: Mullah, Marx, And Mujahid, the late Ralph Magnus drew upon his expertise as coordinator of Middle Eastern Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California and his experience as a former assistant cultural attache of the American embassy in Kabul, to examine Afghanistan's physical situation, human environment, and modern history, as well as the rise and fall of competing internal forces which at the time included the Taliban as well as the independent regional warlords of the north. The reader is provided with invaluable insights into Afghanistan's political position within the restructured Central Asian region, the ethnic relationships complicating its history and potential for political, economic, and social stability. A new introduction by Eden Naby provides a contextual framework for a reasoned perspective on Afghanistan's past, present and future. Afghanistan remains a valuable, timely, and strongly recommended addition to both academic and community library reference collections.

A Currently Relevant History
Dan Rather, when he wrote the forward to this book said that "The trouble with trying to tell the story of Afghanistan, now as ever, is that it is so difficult to get the story straight and to get it out." Dr. Naby, with her co-author the late Prof. Magnus, provide the most readable form of the recent history of Afghanistan concentrating especially on the last twenty-years. We learn why it was prudent, in light of the Cold War, to aid the mujahidin, and why it was imprudent to abandon them to the machinations of their fanatical manipulators - the renegade Arabs organized by Osama Bin Laden. The chronolgy alone is worth the price. Buy the paperback edition with an epilogue that sets the story of feminists and Afghanistan in the context of American foreign policy formation.

Not as good as the coment already posted
Basically, this book is not as good as for teaching use. I don't like the style of how the author state or arrange the topic. A lot confusion. But for those who have stronger math ground, it may be a not bad reference. The most point where I dispointed is the example or the solution of the excise is too abstract. The detailed induction, proof, explaination is especially importantant for beginner. So use this book as a reference.Don't choose as text book. Hard to follow!!!!

This is a very readable book
I read this book. This is an excellent book for understanding
a complex subject.

Difficult subject, yes, but very readable book
I was a bit taken aback by the "reader from United States" who gave this book only one star. The subject is difficult so the book is difficult. The book is as readable as possible given the subject matter. As Albert E. once said, "As simple as possible, but no simpler". This book strikes that balance.

Wannabe Catcher in the Rye
It's not half as poignant or meaningful as the review on the cover makes it sound. Exactly like all the other books of Ryu that I've read--a lightwieght amusement, nothing more. The book had great promise, albeit an unfulfilled one. And I don't think that the translation is the problem--I've read the Korean version, and because Korean and Japanese have almost the same language structure, translating tends to be easy and exact. Actually, the translation was very good and the humorous word play and black humour came through as very fun indeed. But nothing else really gripped me. The protagonist's rambling struck me as too ordinary (you'll see my meaning if you've been in a Korean or Japanese school once--everyone talks about everything like Ryu does) and self-pitying. And since nothing except the word play was of any interest, that made me think--if that didn't survive the translation, there's probably nothing worth reading anyway. So choose this book with caution. Don't expect too much, or you'll be disappointed. Sorta like a Wannabe Catcher in the Rye but without the insight or meaning.

Fun in 69
Those looking for a book about sex don't read this one. Hehe, the 69 here refers to the year 1969 not the position. The hero of this book is Ken Yazaki. A very intelligent 17 year old who wants to be on the top of popular culture. He spews off the names of french writers, poets, and film directors, without having read their work or watced their movies. Ken, however, is a very charismativ individual who gets people to follow him easily. His main two followers are his best friends Adama and Iwase. Ken is bored living in his small town in westerrn Kyushu and wants to do something dramatic. First he joins a Communist clique in his school that he takes over as soon as he joins, and later he throws a rock festival.

The book is quite funny. Ken is a very likeable individual who starts off many paragraphs with tall tales and then he says that really didn't happen. It is quite entertaining. I have read three of Murakami's books now, and I believe this one falls somewhere between _Almost Transparent Blue_ and _Coin Locker Babies_ Good book that gives the reader a glimpse of late 60s Japan.

You will laugh outloud!
This book is nothing short of hilliarious
