A step-by-step, easy-to-implement strategic planning system
This book shows how to use "backwards thinking" to get ahead by creating a vision and using a strategic planning model based on systems thinking.

As a manager, I learned how to avoid typical planning mistakes and develop a plan for all kinds of multi-level change management. The step-by-step explanations and tools made it easy.

Reading it is necessary to understand war.
Great book. It's full of valuable information and provides solid examples of what Sun-Tzu wrote about. The historical background that is given in the beginning is worth reading all by itself. It's also a really good translation. Some translators do more than just translating, and as a consequence they skew meanings left and right, leaving the book a poor mess. This is not the case here. The only drawback is the mass of notes. Most are only comments on why some character is interpreted one way or the other, and while that may be interesting for sinologists and linguists, it is merely burdensome for the reader interested in the military theory of the book. Some of the notes do also offer information not known to one unfamiliar with the period, and make the book that much better. Overall, if you want to read Sun Pin, read this translation. If you don't even know who Sun Pin is, read this book.

An excellent book! No gross room, autopsy room or surgical suite should be without one. The illustrations are clear and the text is very well written. Every medical student and first year pathology resident should have one.

Wonderful package, beautifully designed, looks more like an artist's book than a basic catalog. NOTE: there's one Q&A in English, but three-quarters of the text in is German.

Tales of the Velvet Comet
I am limiting myself to four stars because I have only now ordered this book; why then, might you ask am I expressing the audacity to review a book I am only now ordering? Because this title is a collection of four related novels of which I have only ever read the fourth, but that fourth entry alone is a stunner.

The final story deals with a musical choreographer sent to an abandoned deep space station in the far far future, and the space station had been a bordello. Such themes are dealt with as the life of the prostitues, the conflict of a writer who wants to tell the truth, a harsh one, but who is under contract to paint it over into a musical comedy and a computer learning to appreciate aesthetics.

As usual this work is written in Resnick's deceptively easy to follow style wherein one is not hit over the head with his often poignent themes but rather do they sneak up with subtly haunting impact on one who thinks he is merely enjoying a fluff piece.

If the first three selections in the series are weak, and I have no reason to think they are, this collection is still worth the price of admission for the final novel

The Technique of North American Indian Beadwork
Published in Hardcover by Eagle's View Publishing (September, 1983)
Authors: Monte Smith and Ralph L. Smith
Amazon base price: $10.95
Average review score:

A Book for Beginners
Monte Smith has produced an excellent book for anyone wishing to begin authentic beadwork. He provides complete information regarding the materials and supplies needed. There is a lot of information about the technical aspects of this craft. The book has excellent illustrations on how to make the various stitches with beads on leather, which interested me the most. He has also included numerous photos of original artifacts that a person can use for design ideas. There is also a coded (by letters) reference under the photos which indicates the museums that have those items on display. The only improvement this basic book could have would be color photos which would be of help in selecting beads for a project.

Teddy... - "good", "must have" Steadman
Teddy is a delightfully lyrical book, with the excellent Steadman illustrations you would expect. It tells the story of a Grandfather telling his grandson about a teddy he once had, a very special bear that meant much to the old man. After searching high and low for the bear, the two are wonderfully rewarded. The book is written as a children's book, but will be a delight for all ages. Its a full color, high quality 1st edition (available only in Great Britain and on Amazon), with very sensitive and articulate Steadman illustrations; not as expressive as the "gonzo" work, nor as experimental as the "Animal Farm" or "booze books," the work is rich with the kind of pictures that grown-ups will appreciate, and children will look back to in the future with nostalgia. Highly recommended for anyone collecting childrens illsutration, and a "must have" for any Steadman collection.

One of Very Few Sources to Document When Sawmilling was King
Comprehensive books on early sawmilling in the Pacific Northwest are very rare. This book is as good as it gets. Andrew's companion book (both published by Superior Publishing in the 1950s) was called, "This Was Logging" and together they describe an industry mostly lost to history. There are hundreds of outstanding photos in "Sawmilling", on the other hand I found the book to be somewhat unorganized based upon the chapter headings and sub-headings. After studying the book for some time I was never able to discern where Andrews was going with the organization. Added to that is the lack of references or index, but it's worth the price of these distractions to have these photos and stories of yesteryear still available to enjoy. In some cases he captures pieces from trade journals or company magazines that would have been lost to history if not for his efforts. But that can be said about all three of Andrews works, the third being, "Redwood Classic". The book includes an explanation of the sawmill sign language between the sawyer and setter. Having been around sawmills as a youngster and having worked in a plywood plant for Robert Dollar Co. during breaks from college, I love to learn the job titles of the different folks in a mill. But even more interesting was the language in a shingle mill. Titles as the shingle weaver, upright sawyer, short staker, hand machine sawyer, packer, double-block sawyer and knot sawyer...all jobs where men labored long hours under very tough conditions and now lost to obscurity except for in books such as this one. While this book documents many of the big operations such as Pope and Talbot and many small ones, there were literally thousands of small mills throughout the Pacific Northwest and the photos in the book could have come from any of them. If you want to learn about a livelihood that is only a shadow of it's former self get a copy of Andrew's book and see an industry as it once was.

The Thousand Plane Raid

The Thousand Plan
This book was originally published in the U.K. but was released in the U.S. under the title "The Thousand Plane Raid". I found it to be a fast-read. The book focuses on the first large scale bombing in history, the R.A.F.'s firebombing of Cologne, Germany in 1942.
The author does a good job detailing the planning and preparation for this operation from the command staff down to the individual flight crews. The account of the actual raid is detailed through often harrowing stories from the planes involved. This will offer the reader a new respect for the dangers faced by allied air-crews during this conflict.
The only drawback to the book that I found was the fact that the story is told almost exclusively from the allied (R.A.F.) viewpoint and only slightly touches upon the German side, most notably the citizens of Cologne who indured the bombing.
The author lists this bombing raid as one of the pivoltal events of the war, along with the German losses at Stalingrad and in the desert war, which led to the downfall of the Third Reich.
I highly recommend this book for those wishing to better understand the way the air war was fought during World War II.

Tips from the Garden Hotline by Ralph Snodsmith
Ralph Snodsmith has a down-to-earth style of writing that makes his recommendations easy to understand and apply. While being practical and realistic in problem-solving, his emphasis is on solutions to gardening questions which are basic, natural, and simple. His wealth of knowledge is evident, and it is based on his own experience, with both gardens and indoor plants. While the size of this book does not allow it to be entirely comprehensive on such a large subject, it not only makes for entertaining and educational reading, but is an often helpful resource for one's gardening questions as well.
