Another Excellent Work in the Dumb Ox Series
This is a great translation of Aquinas' comments on Aristotle's work titled, "Metaphysics." Ralph McInerny (Notre Dame University) wrote the preface and the work was translated by John P. Rowan. Both men are strong in their field of expertise and both are Thomists. The book is a phrase by phrase/paragraph by paragraph commentary written by Aquinas on Aristotle's actual work. In other words, Aquinas took what Aristotle espoused in his "Metaphysics" and discussed it in great detail. Aquinas was not shy about admitting what he disagreed and agreed with in Aristotle's philosophy. So not only is the reader of this addition getting the actual translated text of Aristotle's work, but also Aquinas' remarks. This is an incredible reference/resource work for those who are either studying Aristotle's "Metaphysics," the thoughts of Thomas Aquinas, or perhaps both. The book is 839 pages of solid text and very well organized so the reader knows the parts that are Aristotle's (which are all italicized) and Aquinas'(which are in plain type). This book, if for no other reason, at least helps the student of both philosophers gain a better understanding of each; since Aquinas is at his best when commenting about Aristotle's work and the actual text of Aristotle is present for the reader to digest. This paragraph from the back cover of the book well describes what the buyer and reader can expect from such a great work as this - "Thomas Aquinas finds the twelve books he comments on wonderful for their order, both overall and in the minutest detail. His reading is governed by what he takes to be the clear sense of the text, his interpretations keep close to what Aristotle actually said, his account is breathtaking in its acuity." Thus, this is a work that you will not want to miss, since, unfortunately, books of this nature have a short a shelf life.

A wonderful introduction to Emerson
This is a popular edition of Emerson, published, I think, at the tail end of the era when Emerson was a household name. The look of the book suggests that it was published for the convenience of those then-millions of people in mind who might not've read much Emerson but who believed they ought to. On about a third of the pages there is a box in the middle of the page, around which the text flows, in which an arresting excerpt from the text is printed in large italics.

I'd love to think that something like this book, skilfully marketed, would help put Emerson back on lots of bookshelves. It probably wouldn't, I know. Anyway, it's a reminder of a time when Wm. H. Wise, at least, still believed it was possible.

the perfect overview book for INtro to Constru Class
This book is wonderful in its content. I especially like the way it chapeters separate into the overview (sorta History) and then the players and then the process and then communications. It has very good examples of things like specifications and partial drawings. it has exmple questions. it has very good charts and lists. But what I liked the most is the balanced portrayal of the players such as which contract method is preferred by say the architect and which most benefits the Construction Manager. We are using it for our Intr to Constr Tech Class. Saves me from copying info from several dif sources.

Commended to the attention of all Christians
Impressively presented by Ralph C. Wood (University Professor of Theology and Literature at Baylor University), Contending For The Faith: The Church's Engagement With Culture is a drastic call for Christian churches everywhere to revitalize their role in pointing humankind toward God's way, especially in the face of self-interest pressures exerted on every side of the raucous modern world. Examining neo-conservative and neo-liberal alternatives, presenting means to craft a Christian educational culture, regard for romance in a world where sex is used by the media to sell everything from cars to cigarettes, and much more, Contending For The Faith is a thoughtful and thought-provoking manifesto which is commended to the attention of all Christians, regardless of their creed or denomination.

Using collaboration to meet the challenge of conflicts.
This work offers an approach to controlling costs through building collaborative strength for prevention and early intervention. The authors show that there are four basic approaches, each appropriate in given circumstances, but only one-collaboration-that holds the potential of win-win outcomes. However, most organizations over-use approaches that employ avoidance, authority and power, which tend to prove costly, rather than develop and employ systems that promote collaborative resolution and end conflicts from escalating into expensive disputes. The authors take a highly realistic approach to their subject. The book is rich in substantive ideas and method. It provides detailed guidelines for building a system and applying the principles the authors champion. An excellent contribution, worthy of your attention.

Review of Criminal Justice in America: A Critical View
This book provides the most realistic, introductory overview of criminal justice in America that I have ever seen. As a witness, student, and teacher of issues related to this field for many years, I have been consistently dismayed by the shallowness and lack of substantive material found in other works of this type. As well as what one would expect from such a book (e.g., explanations of the law, police, courts, theories of crime, how it is measured etc.), Shelden and Brown portray how criminal justice is affected by the politics, economics, and ideological underpinnings of the wider society and how these larger social forces are translated into the lives of real human beings. They do an excellent job of dispelling many of the popular myths that have helped create definitions of criminality, as well as legitimate what the system does as a response (e.g., all gang members or drug users are threatening and, therefore, deserve imprisonment). Ultimately, they illustrate how law and the system it upholds benefit some (the well off) at the expense of others (the poor and disadvantaged). Their extensive efforts give us a critical, well researched account of a system that is in dire need of change. Alternative conceptions of justice and viable solutions for change are, in fact, what they leave us with at the conclusion of their book. I give this book my highest recommendations.
