Another excellent story in the doomsday series
Another superb medieval whodunnit from the master of the genre. The plot has the five central characters, Ralph, Gervase, Golde, Hubert and Simon involved in another investigation of land disputes in the doomsday book. In this case one of the claimants is murdered during a horse race. As usual the plot has many twists but it is the rapier witt diologue between the characters that makes this an immensely enjoyable read.

The best book available on starting a new church
Ralph Moore writes from over 20 years of successful church multiplication. This is not a book of theory. It's valuable insights come from wisdom forged in the crucible of real experience. If you are a church planter, a parent church pastor or a denominational supervisor of church planters this book is a must read!

Stop the Snoring!

An Honest Look at Snoring
This was a very honest book about snoring and the problems it causes. I snore and I know I snore loud. Girlfriends, family, and roommates have suffered greatly as a result. I liked this book because the author was very honest about his snoring problem and the problems it creates for others. It is a short book and does not take long to read. I also enjoyed how the author fairly evaluated the many "so called" snoring treatments out there. Masks, surgery, nose strips, tennis balls, all "supposed" cures which did not work for the author or most snorers. Sadly the author had no answers to cure snoring and unfortunately that is the reality. However, kudos for the author for openly discussing a problem many of us suffer from but are embarrassed to talk about.

Best version of Alger's famous work

philosophy belongs to everyone
Rather than a give the story of philosophy in 50 pages, Dr. McInerny points students of philosophy in a direction such that their philosophical studies might actually benefit their lives. The book is thus a defense of perennial philosophy, and the classical view that philosophy is something humans are "naturally" drawn to do, because it completes our lives. Dr. McInerny engages the reader in argument, as he defends this view against modern views of philosophy, and discusses the nature of certainty, common sense, and the role of science. Its most important value is the great faith in human intellect and reason, implicit throughout the book. This book would make a good beginning for college philosophy classes. A concluding bibliographical appendix by Joshua Hochschild gives a brief overview of main philosophers throughout history, and some good suggestions for reading.

An excellent book that should be republished
An excellent book. Imagine the effect on continental landmasses of ice sheets 10 miles high sitting on top of them! The book has a collection of facts that won't be found in any geological textbook anywhere that I have been able to discover. The question that needs asking is, How come? Of course, anyone familiar with Sagan's and the AAAS's treatment of Velikovsky will understand. The author does not discredit Velikovsky, but does indirectly reinterpret V.'s chronolgy. The book gives a very plausible explanation of eratic boulders found at great distances from accepted ranges of the ice sheets without invoking great tidal waves. Also offers a testable prediction for it major hypothesis: Where oil reserves can reliably be found!

lyrical, deeply evocative poetry
All northern cultures are sun-centered. But no one else has ever evoked that longing for the sun's light and warmth as Nils-Aslak Valkeapaa. As I read poem after poem, I could feel the poet turning to seek that light as single-mindedly as a sunflower follows the sun's diurnal path.

I am not a Saami speaker so am not in a position to evaluate the faithfulness of the translation. All I can say is the English words upon the page were aspassionate and intensely focused as I've found in the poetry of any native English-speaker.

Valkeapaa's poems also address the shamanic role of the poet: the powerful part anyone who does word magic plays in northern cultures. And I especially liked the few poems in Valkeapaa's specific Saami dialect that were left untranslated so the reader could see their visual arrangement on the page.

I would recommend this book wholeheartedly, and not just to readers interested in Saami culture or to poetry fans. I've let friends and family members who fall into neither category read this book, and its emotional power has hit all of them with equal intensity.

Stimulates thought about correctional system reform.
...The plain, down-to-earth approach cannot help but stimulate not only interest but, hopefully, motivation to initiate thought and action towards change in our correctional system. I do not hesitate to recommend this informative and moving book to all mental health professionals and to all who are given the responsibility of caring for those in our correctional facilities.
