An old tattered book that we still use after 12 years.
This is one of the best presentations on how to build and maintain an international sales network that I have ever seen. We have four copies in our office and all of them are still being used by our consulting staff. We refer to it whenever we lose site of what it takes to maintain a profitable multinational sales force. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute

Faking or Exaggeration?
Ostensibly this book is about the controversy that erupted over the work of Ernest Thompson Seton and William J. Long, both well-respected and popular naturalists in their time (start of the 20th century), and both very successful writers. The general public, which had caught "nature fever," was entranced by their stories of wolves that fed their offspring poison so they wouldn't have to endure captivity, foxes that rode on the backs of sheep to escape hunters, porcupines that curled into balls and rolled down hills, and birds that tied knots in order make nests.

Enter the grand old man of nature writing, John Burroughs and the President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, both of whom had a hard time swallowing the tales of Seton and Long. In exasperation at what he saw as blatant untruths, Burroughs wrote a letter debunking many of the claims Seton and Long made. It was published in the Atlantic and immediately created a stir. Although Seton refused to react, and indeed went out of his way to discuss the matter with Burroughs, Long responded with outrage and accusations of his own. What resulted was an ongoing debate between the two camps, which has been well-documented and expertly told here by Lutts. The bigger picture has to do with the changing perception of wilderness (including animals) and its role in the lives of Americans at the start of the twentieth century.

Lutts does a beautiful job of developng not only the nature faker debate, but explaining how the changing consciousness of the nation shaped and fueld it as well. Thus The Nature Fakers is about much more than the actual debates between Seton, Long, Burroughs and Roosevelt.

My one problem was the length of the book. After 100 pages Lutts has made the issues clear, and it seems time to let us know what happened and sum things up with some concluding remarks. Instead, the arguments and debates go on, via excerpts from the actual texts of the times. Although the quotes are well chosen and helpful at the start, since they allow the reader to get a feel for the writers, they got to be a bit tiresome towards the end.

The slow pace of the second half of the book aside, The Nature Fakers is a fascinating tale involving some of America's most colorful and historic personalities. It also raises concerns that are still very much with us today. You are left wondering what you really think about the role of nature in our lives. Should animals and natural resources be treated as commodities to be consumed, regarded as equals and protected, seen as fearsome and unapproachable, or merely the objects of biological study? Your answers may surprise you. Definitely recommended.

Good book on modern physics for the layman
This book is clear and very interesting. It teaches the general idea of light and modern physics. It can be too simplistic at times for technically minded people.

Evil that good men do.
This true story of a hijacking and hostages. A disturbing fact filled book: extreme human experience. Hostages and captors, not imaginary but real in a part of the world ,that maybe in 1980 would not have half as much interest as it does now. That sad commentary for Americans today. Maybe if we had all had this book on our list to read ,we would not have been so foolish to think such a thing only happens: Not Here, but in another place..

Provocative and passionate
Stephens has produced a passionate and provocative book about three luminaries of African-American culture who have probably never been grouped together before---and certainly not so interestingly. Stephens, who holds a PhD in Communication, is doing something that more American Studies scholars should emulate: he's making comparisons across political boundaries, and he's challenging some prevailing orthodoxies about how we think about race in the US. Very much worth reading and arguing about.

Great book-useless CD
As a 2nd year pediatric resident in a foreign hospital I chose Oski's Pediatrics as my reference textbook based on the clarity of disease presentation, the friendly and consultatory approach to issues as begining your own practice etc. I found extremelly helpfull the sections with brief disease outlines, symptom related differential diagnosis and syndrome presentation. An excellent book (5 star)with the only drawback being the unacceptable CD (no star) which is hard to master and has limited flexibility regarding page layout (could a PDF version help?).

Practical guide for the "I don't have time" people
I was trapped in that circle. I never had the time enough and I wanted to do it all. With this book I realized that some of the work I was doing could be done by someone else. I used to expend to much time in some tasks that I thought could be worth and now I know they're not. You must have this book in your library, it has very useful aids, questionnaires that will help you find your weaknesses. I bet you'll think like me about this book.

The Poetics of Transition: Emerson, Pragmatism, and American Literary Modernism (New Americanists)
Published in Hardcover by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (March, 1999)
Author: Jonathan Levin
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

wonderfully thought and discussed arguments and persuasive
I like this book and the way the author dealt with the "vulnerable" subject on Emerson and Pragmatism. It is strongly persuasive and compact. And the most superb part of the book is the critical geneology the author delienates from Emerson to Stein, though he leaves out C. S. Pierce, who I think is one of the undeveloped and unappreciated thinker among scholars.

Position Primer for the Guitar Student
Published in Spiral-bound by Anytime Pubns (01 January, 1995)

Used price: $192.94

Position Primer
Mr. Scicchitano's efforts in "Position Primer for the Guitar Student" shows in the quality of the content contained within it. The book teaches the student the notes of the fingerboard, and takes them past open-position guitar playing all the way to seventh position with ease. The book moves position by position, teaching scales which best fit each position, and includes etudes written by Mr. Scicchitano himself to give the student experience and good practice with each position. This book is a good buy for any guitarist who wants to learn the fingerboard, learn scales, learn where each scale is best played, and/or improve upon improvisational soloing.
