Golden Treasury of the Familiar
This book was originally owned by my Grandmother and Grandfather. They passed it on to my father who passed it on to one of my three siblings.

We loved it so much that each of us had to have a copy! This book contains poetry, songs, words of wisdom, and even some excerpts from Shakespeare plays.

The stories inside are at times whimsical, sad, thought provoking, and finally, at times just plain hilarious.

Because this book has contents of yesteryear in it, you really feel as if transported back to the times of our parents and grandparents.

It's a book that gives the reader a warm feeling as you flip page to page.

I highly recommend it for everyone, young and old.

Diverse Discussions
While many teachers, and schools buy into basils because they are idiot-proof, simple to instruct, as well as simple to evaluate, many teachers are becoming aware that while many students succeed on standardized tests, they lack problem-solving, critical-thinking skills. Since these skills cannot be tested on current standardized tests, they are often overlooked or pushed aside. However, for students to succeed in careers, as well as life, that require innovative, creative, and "outside the box" solutions, we need to foster such thinking early in life. How can we teachers help our students become independent thinkers? Eeds and Peterson (1990) suggest using dialogue and conversations in the classroom. Dialogue opens the door for individualized learning. This allows all students the ability to participate in conversations. Dialogue allows all students to achieve and grow using skills that are difficult for textbooks to accomplish. The ability for all students to participate, and the freedom to respond without the fear of being wrong can lead the students to begin to look deeper. This can lead into what we all want our students to become: independent.

a must for mythology lovers
The Great Mother is an absolute must-have for anyone intersted in mythology, Jungian psychology or even literary analysis.

Part I is quite heavy in termonology and complex archtypal ideas; part II is more accessable and can be read and enjoyed without part I. As a feminist, I found it fascinating to learn about the different aspects of the goddess. I especially enjoyed the chapter called "Lady of the Beasts" which discusses the different animals associated with the Great Mother and their symbolic significance. Even if you don't subcribe to Jungian psychology, this book is a fascinating look into the human mind.

Finally, there's 185 pages of photographs and drawings at the end of the book -- fascinating to thumb through!
