A comprehensive list of most Pullman cars ever built.
This is only a list of most, if not all, Pulman cars ever built. But the list is accompnied with some floor plans and photos that make the volume more valuable. Subsequent volumes on more detailed information of Palace cars, Heavyweight cars, and Lightweight cars would have been published (at least sometime in the nineties), but sadly, copyright problems has been preventing the author to release those would-bes. Anyway, this is a must for those who looking for information on Pullman cars. It is indeed a shame this one is now out of print.

Character and Heroism
Published in Paperback by Fredonia Books (NL) (April, 2002)
Authors: Ralph Waldo Emerson and Adam Starchild
Amazon base price: $24.95

Children Need Heroes
Some quotations from Adam Starchild's wonderful afterword to this book are appropriate:

"Children today are starved for the image of real heroes. Celebrities are not the same thing as heroes. Heroes existed way before celebrities ever did, even though celebrities now outshine heroes in children's consciousness."

"Worshiping celebrities leaves children with a distinctly empty feeling -- it doesn't teach that they'll have to make sacrifices if they want to achieve anything worthwhile. No- talents become celebrities all the time. The result is that people don't seem to care about achievement or talent -- fame is the only objective."

"... Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of traits that instruct and inspire people. A hero does something worth talking about, but a hero goes beyond mere fame or celebrity. The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. If they serve only their own fame, they may be celebrities but not heroes. Heroes are catalysts for change. They create new possibilities. They have a vision, and the skill and charm to implement their vision."

"Heroes may also be fictional. Children may identify with a character because of the values projected. People tend to grow to be like the people that they admire, but if a child never has any heroes what images will he copy? Adults need heroes too, but the need is even more urgent for children because they don't know how to think abstractly. But they can imagine what their hero would do in the circumstances, and it gives them a useful reference point to build abstract thinking skills."

A timeless treasure of collected wisdom
Compiled and edited by Ralph Grizzle, Charles Kuralt's People is an anthology of newspaper columns written in 1956 by Charles Kuralt, who was then a print journalist with the Charlotte News. From a newspaper columnist, Kuralt went on to join the fledgling CBS network and became a household name in American television influenced culture. The timeless treasure that is his collected wisdom and recorded insights remains as fresh, eye-opening, and timely today, as it was nearly fifty years ago. An intellectually stimulating collection of insightful and occasionally poignant commentaries, Charles Kuralt's People is very highly recommended reading for students of the human condition in general, and legions of Charles Kuralt fans in particular.

Charles Olson's Reading: A Biography

Narrative+scholarship=reference
Professor Maud's book provides welcome relief from sensationalist biography. By tracing Olson's reading, and thus establishing a chronological framework for the poet's thinking, Maud does not confuse with editorial and/or emotional bias. For readers unable to make the trip to the various archives of Olson's work around the US, this book is a valuable reference. The extensive notes provide a place for the interested scholar to get lost in for hours. Extensive and intensive if a little dry, this book is worth the read as a companion to Olson's work.

non-threatening intro to Christianity
I give this book to friends who are curious about Christianity, but don't want to spend too much time studying. The book is small, easy to read, and short. Milton doesn't try to coerce us into believing, but he does show why he loves Christianity. I attended a Christian church but never understood how anyone could stand it. Attending church meant having to dress up to impress others and having to repeat words that I didn't even understand. Milton's book helped me to understand. Going to church feels so much better now that I know why I'm there. Christianity is actually a very beautiful religion. "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis is the other book I recommend if someone wants to spend a bit more time deciding whether to accept Christianity.

The Chronicles of Little Nicholas
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (Juv) (December, 1993)
Authors: Goscinny, Jean-Jacques Sempe, and Ralph Manheim
Amazon base price: $15.00
Used price: $35.47
Average review score:

A humorous look at the freedom of a childs mind.
As a child, my mother would read us the Nicholas tales but it was always difficult to make out the words between her laughter. We would giggle and roll around the bed, our stomachs aching. The humour easily managed to cross the age gap and is a clear display of Goscinnys comedy talent. The storys are highly descriptive looks into the minds of kids at a French school (English translation is as funny); narcissistic, self-obsessed, easily engrossed and overflowing with creativity. The adults are odd obstacles. The world the kids find themselves in is also odd. The author manages to capture both the childs' amusement at the strange reality we all find ourselves in and the childs vast lack of concern thereof. Like Adam and Eve, the children are free of guilt. And, like Adam and Eve, they couldn't care less.
