birds in the bushes
My name is Anna, and I'm 8 years old. I think that Birds in the Bushes is a quite inspiring book. It shows how just one person, and (in that time) a WOMAN, could make so much difference. I think that Margaret Morse Nice would be a nice person to know if she was still alive. I especially liked the parts where they wrote down the bird songs. Bird watchers would be amazed at this book and would give it a 10 or 20 star rating if they could!

Chekhov's Dreamy X-File
Chekhov's a master.

Even here, the shortest of stories, is as powerful as his most popular plays. And while the story shares similar themes and environs; the lonely country estate, a beautiful orchard, family angst, malaise, boredom, nature, madness, creativity and the interesting-and invigorating-visitor who comes to stay, there's even more here.

Call it the supernatural, insomnia-induced hallucination or the madness & joy of creative genius, Chekhov stumbled onto something new here. A column of smoke, a dark tornado, a monk robed in black. Our protagonist, Andrey Kovrin, tells Tanya Pesotskaya, the estate-owner's daughter, about the black monk, imparting him as a legend, a story "not distinguished for its clarity." Andrey soon thereafter meets the monk, who comes first as a force of nature, later preceded by violins and singing. As deep as Andrey's conversations with the monk later come to be, the surrounding tale of Andrey and the estate-owner's daughter is classic Chekhov and stands on its own, x-file or no x-file.

I loved this story. Hope you like it too.

Out of print, but totally worth tracking down
I read this more than a decade ago, and have never forgotten it. It's a beautifully written novel about what one must lose to retain a traditional life in America. Find it, buy it, read it.

A real user-friendly oracle
I had a good time reading and using the original Book of Runes with accompanying runestones, as well as the rune cards! I even created my own set of stones from modelling material and cards from 3x5 cards. I had no complaints about this oracle. Other oracles (whether in the form of books, cards or any other device), I've had some difficulties: sharp rebukes, condescending "messages," pseudointellectual drivel mascarading as enlightened wisdom. But I really enjoyed reading and using Ralph Blum's cards and runestones.

A Maze of Bureaucracy, Is It What We Want?
Ralph P. Hummel gives an amazing account of how things truly are. Often using down-to-earth examples to make his point, Ralph Hummel paints a realistic picture of bureaucracy and all that is contained within and without it. It is easy to tell someone how to make trains run on time. Ralph Hummel goes further and explains the manager's role during a train wreck. Even if you believe in bureaucracies, anyone managing, dreaming of managing, or curious about being managed should read this book.

raw and wonderful
Sometimes poetry really strikes a chord with me, and reading this i felt like the author had not just struck a chord in me, but a whole symphany. i realize this sounds melodramatic, but that's the way that love in a teenager is. melodramatic, out of focus half the time, but real, raw, almost tangible. Mr. Fletcher somehow became a teenager again when he wrote this, because i don't think it's possible for someone over 19 to really understand the way a 16 year old loves her boyfriend, no matter how flawed he is. A masterpiece.

An informative and educational book on an important film.
"By Any Means Necessary" is an excellent book on the making of the film "Malcolm X" by director Spike Lee. Not only do we get a chance to see the film from the director's eye, but we also get to read all of the hassles he had to go through in order to come out with a film in Hollywood. The whole tone of the book, like all of Lee's books on his firms, is that of a diary. So what we're reading is random notes, scribbles, and just little lines that he will remember down the line. It almost seemed like a match made in hell: Spike Lee, considered to be a "controversial" film director, does a film on the line of Malcolm X, considered to be a controversial human rights figure. Throughout the book, Lee has to remind himself that despite the nay-sayers, the film will be done, even at times when he doubts his own creative genius. There are also thoughts from some of the actors (including Denzel Washington, who also played Malcolm X in his early years), but the best words come from Lee
