Not what I had hoped for
I appreciate the clear writing style of this book, but I've found several content problems that are very frustrating to a new Visio user. The author often says to click the icon on the toolbar, but he fails to say which toolbar, leaving the reader to display and remove toolbars until the correct icon appears. I've found shortcuts that don't work as described in the book. For instance, any shortcut that begins with CTRL+O opens the Open File dialog box instead of doing what the book says. In several places the author says to click on an option on the TOOLS menu when, in fact, the option is on the SHAPE menu. While it's better than no book at all, I don't recommend this book for new Visio users.

Historically interesting
This is a biography of Milena Jesenská, a Czech journalist who was, in a way, a great love of Kafka's. She was an unusual woman for her time. Highly intelligent and with a rebellious streak, she fashioned herself into a journalist and became well-regarded for her literary and political writing. In her 20s she came to know Kafka when she translated his work into Czech. This gave rise to an impassioned correspondence between them, although the connection didn't turn into a real-life love affair, partly because Milena was married, and partly because of Kafka's numerous anxieties and aversions in the male/female domain. Unfortunately, those interested in insights into Kafka will not get many from this book, as he comes and goes quite quickly in the narrative. Rather, the book is a loving tribute to Milena by Margarete Buber-Neumann, with whom she was imprisoned at the women's concentration camp at Ravensbrück. The two had planned to write a book together when they were freed, but Milena died of kidney failure in May 1944, so Margarete chose instead to tell her friend's story.

Unique
Ralph Angel can be remembered as a poet who was not afraid to be seedy and romantic. His verbal painting of the cityscape is a talent that is real and genuine. 'It Takes Practice To Get Lost' is a splendid line. Angel does get lost in Neither World and I wish I could have gotten lost with him.

Good book to have
The book gives the latest developments and views on money management and portfolio management, however, (at least to my opinion) not into detail as the previous book, The Mathematics of Money Management.

Good student text
The authors give a nice presentation of theory involved in recrystallization, distillation, chromatography, and extraction. The writing style is academic, but friendly enough to keep you interested. I found it great to read before doing the scheduled experiments in O-Chem lab. However, this is a very "student"-ish text and I seriously doubt professionals would find it useful, unless you're looking for a refresher course in the basic techniques. The labs I took had a significant amount of NMR involved; not much discussion in this text about that. The problems provided are usually good, but there are no answers given. I'd also recommend "Principles and Techniques in an Integrated Chem Laboratory" by Aikens, Bailey, et al.
Other Chinas: The Yao and the Politics of National Belonging

Ups and Downs
Having read the Duke University Press summary, I was very excited about the book. However, after pouring over it for a few hours, this book is not what I expected. I expected some discussion about his experiences in doing fieldwork with the Yao (Mien in China). I also expected a detailed study of how the Yao are depicted in China today, by the media, literature, popular beliefs, etc. Instead, Litzinger focuses a lot on the state and the historical representations of the Yao in past literature and politics. Other Chinas is more about China, less about the Yao. Plus, any discussions of the Yao were cited from other literature. It would have been interesting to see how the Yao represent themselves in China, and at the same time, how they think about their representation in China. There is not much discussion of either.
One should be familiar with anthropological theory, Yao literature, and some Chinese history before diving in. He drops many names and many theories, often without much context. This book is not intended for the casual reader.
Aside from all I've said, chapter one about Yao history is an interesting read.

Pretty good, but basic and bland
Covers all aspects of academic publishing thoroughly. Provides extensive documentation from other sources. Not particularly inspiring, but good if you don't know the basics.

A review of the history of the Pharmaceutical Industry
The book gives a good introduction to the history of the pharmaceutical industry since the early nineteenth century. I, a chemist who is interested in the industry, found the book to be easy to read, full of interesting details, and very informative. The book points out some aspects that allow new drug development possible.

One-sided, dense with facts, but interesting
The book details the conflict of General Motors and the City of Detroit vs. the residents in a Detroit area nicknamed Poletown in the early 80's. Once you wade through the first several chapters of dry facts you get to get a feel for a drama shaping up, which indeed unfolds and fills the remaining chapters. The book goes into great detail to show how a public institution such as the City of Detroit can take land owned and paid for by private citizens and give it to a corportation to build a factory all in the name of the public good. It details the small group's failed struggle against Detroit, GM and the media to preserve their community, both in factual evidence and emotional accounts. --But be warned, this is most definitly a one-sided account.

Proofreading skills
Although this book will be helpful to the beginning proofreader, it may not be of use for advanced proofreading. It may help you write better letters, but it's not for the professional proofreader. It does include workbook sections, proofreaders' marks and proofreading strategies.
