The pictures are to die for.
Tony Edwards, has done a fantastic job, bringing a fanticiful story line and exquiste pictures together, the sort of book one would enjoy on a balmy summers evening. An absolute must for all fantasy readers.

Shines a light on Dark Age coins
This is a little book with a lot of information. The author begins by explaining his scope (about 500AD to 1500AD Europe including Crusader, Runic and Russian coins). The book is well illustrated with line drawings and examples of medieval text styles. He explains many of the how and whys of Abbreviations, Monograms, Word Separators, Tables of the Names of Persons and Places, and he includes some very basic information on Medieval Numismatic Latin. This book combined with a medieval-latin dictionary would prove extremely useful for interpreting medieval coin inscriptions. This would also be very valuable for Historic re-creationists and re-enactors of the Medieval period. There is a lot of bang for the book.

a thinking woman's "myst"
I bought this cd-rom after hearing the NPR interview with the authors. i've been a lifelong fanatic of all things Las Vegas and this particular artifact is something "out there". it reads like a tabloid full of stories that may or may not have happened in Vegas and there are plenty of occasional games to keep my less-than-solid attention engaged. i especially liked how you have to pretend your gambling (by dropping coins into the slot) in order to keep reading the book. the only bad thing is that you have to resize your screen in order to play the "game" but its worth it. i'd definitely recommend it for anyone who's interested in las vegas for more than a weekend of delirius gambling.

Practical Forgiveness in Biblical Perspective
If you want something on relationships that is straightforward and honest, this is the book for you. Ralph Gwinn shares personal and biblical perspective on the practical effects of forgiveness in relationships. I found this book easy to read because it is written with warmth and clarity. The author introduces other writings on forgiveness, and especially underlines Biblical teaching that is applicable and comforting, challenging and intriguing. There are discussion questions at the end of each chapter which make this book practical for group study or personal application. I can imagine studying this book with young people or adults. This book is an open invitation to living a life of freedom through forgiveness. I'm giving it as gifts to friends in several countries.s Don't miss it.

Death Defying Action Riding for the Pony Express
180 pages of illustrated true grit, with maps. 12 short chapters chronicle the first day's crossing of mail by the Pony Express. 4 more chapters record the danger and greatest rides of actual Pony Express riders. Ralph Moody shows only a slight bias toward his beloved wild mustangs.

When you can't tell a Roman from a barbarian anymore....
I read this book mainly because the collapse of Roman rule in Gaul is probably the closest model we have for what happened in the much less documented post-Roman period in Britain. The depth of research in this volume is absolutely astounding! Mathisen covers nearly every way the aristocrats of Gaul had of reacting to the barbarian invasion (many of which, coincidentally, find parallels in Britain). They could denigrate the barbarians and engage in even greater Roman chauvanism, they could try to deny the situation and continue as they always had, they could flee, they could enter the church, or they could "turn traitor," and collaborate with the barbarians. Mathisen shows how different aristocrats in different places throughout Gaul used each of these strategies to adapt to an unenviable position. It is an excellent study of what happens to a civilizaion when its entire world comes crashing in on it.

Rotten Ralph's Rotten Christmas
Perfect for mischievious children who need to know they are always loved. Jealousy as an emotion is dealt with at a young child's level. Illustrations are comedic. My second graders gave it a thumbs up.

The one to have if you are to limit to one audio record
Quite different from "Feynman Volumes" (which only 1st volume has been released to this date--Ralph Leighton hopes he'll be able to release 3 or 4 more items, and so do we) in that it doesn't consist of a raw record of a story, but rather in many items mixed up. Other pieces are mostly drums, but most noticeable is a Feynman's imitation of Japanese! or his extemporized "Orange Juice" song, running "gimme gimme gimme orange juice". The story is what constitutes the middle part of "Safecracker meets safecracker" in "Surely You're joking Mr Feynman", from hacking in Los Alamos to, quite ironically, the safecrackers' meeting at the end of the story which is not included. May be Ralph will release the whole story as part of another volume. If you're not too sure what item start your collection with, I suggest you begin with Volume 1, encourage Ralph to produce more such items, and pursue with these.

San Francisco. 1985. The West Light Agency & Bill Pronzini
San Francisco is a handsome book containing 90 photographs of San Francisco in the mid-1980s. It is oddly shaped at 10.5" wide and 8.75" tall. The photographs are excellent. There is a good, but rather short, introduction by mystery writer Bill Pronzini; and many of the photographs are of buildings and locations mentioned in the mysteries of Pronzini and Hammett.
The captions are minimal, yet informative and entertaining. The book consists of 92 unnumbered pages and is published by Skyline Press.
