Excellent reading for the VFR pilot
Don't let the title put you off. This book covers all sorts of 'adversity' from night flying to bird strikes to mountain flying to IMC. It gives excellent practical advice for pilots, is easily readable, and thought provoking. One of the best aviation books I've read.

superb eleventh century mystery
While on a hunt with his hounds, local constable Henry Beaumont finds the crushed corpse of Martin Reynard. Outraged that the homicide occurred on his lands and to a former employee of his, Henry investigates the crime. Having no experience on murder cases, Henry ignores motive and opportunity to decide that only the blacksmith had the means i.e., the strength to perform this odious act. Henry places the big man in the dungeon.

William the Conqueror's Domesday commissioners Ralph Delchard and Gervase Bret head an entourage handling a local land dispute. When the King's team learn of Henry's rush to judgment, they feel the constable did not do an adequate investigation. They begin their own inquiries into what really happened to Martin.

THE FOXES OF WARWICK is a superb eleventh century mystery that brings the era to life as rarely seen in a novel though the period graces myriad of books. The story line is insightful, vividly descriptive, and contains a fabulous who-done-it with a rational twist of an ending. The characters are warm and feel real, making the age seem even more colorful for the audience. The Domesday series is one of the best medieval mystery collections on the market and author Edward Marston has written a tale worthy of award consideration.

Freely Chosen Reality

An Unknown Philosophical Gem
Fr. Ralph Powell, O.P., a brilliant Dominican Friar from Chicago, has written a book filled with quotes from philosophers, historical sketches and brief outlines concerning the problem of epistemological relativism. "Freely Chosen Reality" delivers, point by point, pieces of evidence proving that most philosophers have agreed on one permanent claim. Powell, who admits to having relativist leanings, spent ten years studying and analyzing the "objectivity question," and the problem of historical and epistemological relativism. His findings-argued convincingly in Freely Chosen Reality-have laid to rest the vaguest credibility of relativist claims...

Powell shows two areas deeply affected by the problem of relativism: ethics and logic. Foundations supporting analytic ethics have been pulverized. The critique of Kant's universal moral imperative by Hegel, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche dismantled "the foundations both of analytic ethics and our contemporary liberal morality."

Powell's insight concerning the effect of relativism on ethics is, I feel, fundamentally sound. The collapse of contemporary ethics brought on by the easy critique of Kant has effects on today's college campuses. Once Kant's do-it-yourself Golden Rule has been proven to be silly, it becomes difficult to got back to common sense and accept the Old Testament commandments.

I also agree with Powell that relativism likewise affects the field of logic. Clearly, a denial of necessity would upset the art of thinking. Unfortunately, relativism denies logical necessity. Consequently, logic is discredited, held suspect and shunned by some philospohers and scholars. Powell says, "Epistemological relativism is...destructive of claims to the transcultural universality of logic."

Arguing that there is trans-cultural agreement among philosophers on the bedrock of sensual experience, Powell reveals the possibility of philosophical and intellectual unity and counters the divisive, violent movement of relativism with a fundamental truth. "There is trans-cultural agreement on an experiential basis for philosophy." His conclusion is capable of establishing a person's hope and trust in the conclusions of ethics and logic...That upon which the above philosophers agree is that a real-relation is the first object of experience and the extrinsic formal cause of sensation.

A fight of Titans for primacy in the field of Psychanalisys.
This is a sad book to read. In fact, one would not expect that such a type of bad development would occur between the two most important figures of psychoanalisys. It is as if Marx and Engels had broken their friendship for life and began to fight for fame and glory in front of everybody. The spoil was huge: nothing more than the primacy for fame and glory in the first steps of psychanalisys.

Sure, the letters span a pretty much limited space of time of no more than 8 years (1906-1914) but the reader has to keep in mind that what was at stake was the establishing of the foundations of psychoanalisys all over Europe and also in the whole World.
What began as a cordial friendship and evolved into an almost father (Freud) to son (Jung) relationship, deteriorated into the most depressive fighting of personal primacy on many subjects. In this regard, it seems that the feud was initiated by Freud who considered Jung a type of his personal assistant to market the developments of his findings
THe fact that this is a abridged edition does not mean nothing except that here the common reader will find the most important material exchanged by the two great men and will be saved from some meaningless material of more burocratical tone.
Also of value is the introduction that ilustrates all the effort made by the two family sides to publish the letters, in spite the view by Jung that the ideal time for them to be published would be 20 to 30 years after his death.

THis is a must reading for anyone interested in the history of psychanalisys.

A helpful insight to Gen X
With "FIRENDS", Ralph Moore lends years of insight as a father, pastor and mentor to the way to reach the heart of Gen Xers. His advice is timely and admonition is based on a proven track record of seeing Gen Xers come to faith and Christ and be rapidly mentored and released into fruitful leadership.
More than a "how to" book, Ralph explores the "whys" behind what is happening on the spiritual landscape of this generation.
This is a must read if you are beginning to delve into the world of Gen X and post modernism as it relates to matters of faith.
Especially take note of the chapters which relate to mentoring. There are very few people who have been as successful with raising up and releasing leaders so consistently from this generation.

From Lenin to Stalin

An excellent introduction to early USSR history.
This book is an excellent introduction to what happened from the Lenin to Stalin years in the USSR. Anyone who's curious how a country meant to turn into a Socialist Democracy became a Totalitarian Tyranny will want to read this book! This book enlightens the reader on how that country was corrupted by Stalin, and it also attacks some of the myths spread about the Bolsheviks which are still propagated today ( the German gold idea, for instance ). For those who think that Stalinism is the natural outcome of Bolshevism, read this book; It dispels the myth. This book should be complemented later by books by Trotsky and Isaac Deutscher's biographical trilogy about Lenin's second-in-command as well, but all in all, a great book to start with for understanding the Russian Revolution.

Great Beginning Reader
This book is a great beginning reader for lower elementary children. It is listed in the Reading Recovery program as a good level book for emergent readers. It has an introductory vocabulary list for the student, teacher and parent to use. It makes use of common sight words and there is a good repetition of vocabulary words to help with vocabulary mastery.
