Aquinas and Analogy

Look Elsewhere
This work is confused. McInerny tries to separate the logic of analogy from its real foundation in being. His criticisms of Cajetan just don't seem to hit the mark. The confusion can be summed up in his statement that "analogy" is itself used analogously. Well, if there is not some sense in which "analogy" is used univocally, then "analogy" loses any definite meaning. It becomes simply the night in which all cows are black. If you want to read something better by McInerny, read his translation and commentary on Aquinas' Disputed Question on Virtue. Ethics appears to be his forte.

Life is more than a metaphor
I found the book clear enough. To those with an honest desire to understand reality on a sounder basis than many contemporary philosophies allow,I highly recommend this book.To those who want live in a well paid soft focus world I commend the previous reviewers

Terrible writing and agonizingly long and boring
Horrible. I've read lots of bicycle travelogues and this is THE WORST to date. Author writes like a little kid...choppy and without any flow. I read about 200 pages out of this 400+ page book and threw it away. Bottomline: Don't buy it - it isn't worth it.. Read Barbara Savages' MILES FROM NOWHERE if you want to read a GREAT BICYCLE TRAVELOGUE...

very good accounts of people met & places seen
i am a biker and i took bike rides around europe. i didnt find his writing boring as opposed to the other reviewer. i think he gives a nice account of the places he visited, how much he wanted this dream to come true, and very optimistic view of life.
overall, i will send this book as a gift to friends who are avid bikers.

Alma goes on the Turbo Diet
Terrible!!! Are you willing to go on a liquid diet for 2 weeks that consists of some expensive mixture from a health food store and the water from steamed veggies??? If you are, then you are as crazy as I was to buy this stupid book. Plus, you spend one day that you cannot leave home due to the laxatives you must take. He says it is a permanent weight loss, but you must be very careful to eat a very well-balanced diet afterwards. Same song, second verse. This diet even sounds dangerous. Don't waste your money!!

Alma goes on the Turbo Diet
I read Alma goes on the Turbo Diet & The Turbo-Protien Diet. They were a very fast read and similar. Alma goes on the Turbo Diet was very simple in its approach while The Turbo-Protien Diet was more technical.

I have tried many, many diets. I started this program last Sunday at 153pds. I am 5'7". I feel most comfortable at 130pds. As of today, I am at 145.5 (7.5pds lighter). I have a lot of energy.

HOWEVER, this is NOT a diet for anyone that has never drank protein shakes. Before the diet, I had 1 a day and a protein bar. The mixture from this diet tastes much worse than a regular protein shake. I am now very comfortable with the taste. The first day was the worse--determining amounts of powder to water.

I am really happy and will be on it for 7 more days. I work out 30-40 minutes a day normally and still have the energy to do so.
Good luck.

Most disappointing collection catalog in years
Over the years I've been an avid collector of every museum or exhibition catalogs on North American Indian Art -- but this one is the biggest disappointment. While provenience histories can be of importance for the reader, here it provides little meaning and appears to primarily satisfy the collectors/dealers' vanities. Oftentimes provenience entries are incomplete. The lengthy caption reveal very little new or interesting information and for the most part contain meaningless blah-blah just to pad the space around the pictures.

Layout and design is pedestrian, and for that price one would have expected to find all items in color.

A missed opportunity, too bad!

A masterpiece!
This is no mere exhibition catalogue. It is a superb book- thoroughly researched, well-written and beautifully photographed- really a one-volume encyclopedia of Native North American art. The inclusion of provenance is essential and an important ethical model that others in Native American studies should follow.

A major achievement.

Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (March, 1969)
Authors: Rw Tyler and Ralph W. Tyler
Amazon base price: $10.00
Used price: $5.93
Average review score:

Poorly written
I have read books written for children that were better than this. The grammar was grade-school level, the punctuation was horrendous, the wording simplistic. For example, on page 28 Tyler writes, "Let me illustrate these two types of suggestions that can be got from these reports..." Even the back cover, in a tribute to the author, has commas that don't belong. This is a fine illustration of the dire state of our educational system, as it was written by a former Professor of Education and Dean!

Ideas
This last review is an illustration of exactly what is wrong with so many educators. Imagine someone so narrow-minded they can't get past the style of writing that they most prefer in order to understand the ideas behind the writing. This book likely did a great deal to counteract the design of curricula based on the kind of traditionalists who would focus exclusively on "commas in the wrong place". BTW, there are few if any grammar or mechanical errors in the book, and Tyler certainly didn't do the jacket design.

Solid Mystery
Ralph McInerny writes good mystery. Notre Dame fans in particular will enjoy this story set on the campus. It shows a delightful understanding of the way major Universities work and the life of the average graduate student. I was not completely comfortable with McInerny's portrayal of women, all of whom seemed willing to do just about anything to get their man. Overall, I enjoyed this mystery and found it very pleasant reading.

So-so
Several incidents on campus have worried the University of Notre Dame administration. Three gravestones at Cedar Grove cemetery were knocked over by vandals. Native Americans disrupt a wedding ceremony at the log chapel. The Blue Cloud Nation kidnaps Chancellor Father Bloom claiming that the university illegally stole the land from their ancestors. At half-time of the nationally televised game with Florida State, a young man parades on the field dressed as a Native American claiming the land belongs to the Blue Cloud Nation. Administration advisor Noonen and Father Anselm are abducted. No one has been hurt yet.

The University turns to insiders Roger and Philip Knight, who have done discrete investigations before. Roger begins making inquiries that leads him to former graduate student Orion Plant, who obsessively feels the land belongs to Native Americans. He has engaged a lawyer to represent him and the Native Americans. Meanwhile Roger and Philip continue with their inquiries trying to find evidence to shut up Orion. Though the "pranks" are dangerous, the ante is dramatically raised when murder occurs.

THE BOOK OF KILLS is an intriguing academic mystery focusing on who owns land that has been questionably taken from ancestors. The story line moves quickly forward as incidents keep occurring. The siblings are wonderful charcaters, though Roger and his golf cart are more prominent. The support cast provides a feel to the university. Though a murder simplifies much of the plot, perhaps too much, Ralph McInerny's fourth Notre Dame novel will attain high rankings in the polls.

A Major Disappointment
This book was a disappointment. There was virtually nothing in it I could use. It is so basic that it might be appropriate for grade school level, but that is about all. When I purchased it, I was hoping for some real pointers, tips and exercises I could use to improve my listening skills. What is contained in the book is generalities such as on page 17: three keys to hearing the message: care, pay attention and select what is important. Or on page 60, the book covers stopping bad listening habits by (a) catching yourself in the act, (b) fighting the habit, (c) substituting the old habit for a new habit, (d) ackowledge your success and (e) be patient with yourself. There are too many quizes and "listening labs". I do not recommend this book.

"Most people believe they are effective listeners." Not!
The quote above is taken from the book. The author reports that most of us absorb about 50 percent of what we hear initially in a conversation, and that absorption rate quickly drops to 25 percent for the whole conversation. Yet listening is something that we spend more time doing at work than anything else. Clearly, poor listening is an important contributor the the universal organizational menace, the communications stall. On the other hand, the book also points out that effective listening is hard work, and we cannot stay at 100 percent effectiveness for long.

We basically pay attention when we believe the message is important, interesting to us, we are in the mood to listen, we have listened to something similar in the past, and we like or respect the person who is speaking.

On the other hand, most people do want to be good listeners.

The purposes of this book are to explain the how and why of active listening (conversing with someone to make a better personal connection and to have a better understanding), to show results from good listening, and to direct the reader to improve her/his listening skills.

The book has six parts. The first concerns why it is desirable to become a better listener. The second addresses how good listeners process information and achieve higher levels of listening success. The third helps you identify your listening styles that help or hurt your listening effectiveness. The fourth is full of personal exercises to further define your strengths and weaknesses as a listener. (I was pleased to learn that I am a good listener, but I certainly have some terrible weaknesses to overcome in order to become a better one). The fifth involves ten tips that will help most people improve. The sixth is a summary of the book. The final section is helpful for creating your personal action plan.

You can also call a toll-free number and get a test to see how you are doing with your listening.

Every section is full of examples, exercises, quizzes, and self-help directions.

The book ends with Kathy's story about how better listening helped her reestablish a good relationship with her Mother.

Most of the material is business and work oriented, but it will certainly help your relationships outside of work.

Although no one can cover everything in one book, a lot of useful material is packed into one short book. You can use this book to both improve your own listening, and to encourage and show those you care about how to do the same. I have had a lot of training in listening and read quite a few books, and I found this material to be sound, thorough, and well presented in a simple, effective way.

Have many great chats and a better life!

Rustic Rehash
If you are interested in the rustic or Adirondack style, you are no doubt already familiar with Ralph Kylloe, the author of several fine books related to this style. "Cabin Collectibles," Kylloe's latest offering, purports to offer "a broad overview of antique cabin collectibles." The photographs, taken by Kylloe, are beautiful, though many of the scenes depicted appeared previously in another of his books, "Rustic Style." The text, however, is disappointing. A chapter on canoes and paddles reads like a high school sophomore's report on the evolution of canoes in North America. Statements like: "The teardrop shapes of canoe paddles and the graceful, sensual, sweeping lines of canoes carry emotional overtones," and "Men's snowshoes tended to be larger than women's. Small snowshoes were also made for children," offer little insight to the would-be collector. Insipid statements like, "Human beings have an incredible propensity to collect things," regularly appear in the text and then, annoyingly, again as captions for photographs. While Kylloe offers a few gratuitous remarks on collecting, "You don't have to have 10,000 twig stands to fill every last corner of your house...," one could realistically expect something a bit more helpful from a person who boasts of collecting in less than two months "more than 350 pairs of antique skis and poles, 350 pairs of antique snowshoes, 200 fishing creels, 250 antique sleds, 200 antique camp signs, hundreds of old bamboo fly rods, and more rustic stuff than I can remember." The book's greatest shortcoming is its failure even to mention so many wonderful cabin collectibles: mounted birds and fish, paintings and prints of rural scenes and nature, camp blankets, fishing reels and rods, souvenir pennants, balsam pillows, and indian busts, to name but a few. While some of these items appear in the photographs, they are not mentioned in the text. If you are thinking about purchasing this book, don't. Get a better return for your money with "Adirondack Style, Cabin Fever, Inside Log Homes," or even Kylloe's "Rustic Style." Any one of these books offers better ideas on cabin collectibles.

Cabin Collectibles
For more than two decades I have been involved in designing and decorating both residences and commercial facilities in the rustic style. I have lectured around the country in front of many different types of architectural and design organizations, written dozens of articles, several books and my home has appeared many times in magazines such as Country Living and others.

On a daily basis people from all around the country call me asking for basic information on both rustic accessories and rustic furnishings of all sorts.

In an attempt to answer many of the questions I proposed to one of my publishers, Gibbs Smith of Layton, Utah, that I do a small, inexpensive book that addressed many of the very basic questions people often ask about rustic collectibles. So in the fall of 2000 we can out with CABIN COLLECTIBLES.

Designed to answer basic questions about only a few of many items often used to decorate rustic settings the book has been very well received from the public as well as from professional reviewers including:

"Love this Book!"Beth Anderson, Log Home Illustrated

"A fascinating book!"Anne Gilbert, Charlotte Observer

"An entertaining book that won't break the bank!" Francis Hines, Albany Times Union

"Great looking displays...tons of information about rustic collectibles!" Julie Gassman, Country Decorator

The book sold out of its first edition immediately and was reprinted to meet a growing demand. I have been discussing with my publisher the possibility of Volume Two of Cabin Collectibles to offer further information on many of the other items that are often used to decorate rustic settings. At this time, however, I am completing two other large books on RUSTIC SETTINGS. One book will be out in August of 2002 and the other will be on the market a year later. Hopefully, a few years down the line Volume II of Cabin Collectibles will also be on the market. Please feel to contact me at ralphkylloe.com.

Ciencia:¿estaba La Biblia Adelantada?

Unfortunately Not Very Good
I was hoping to find what the book promised, but all I found were poor references and wishful and misleading commentary. We as Christians don't need to "dress up" the Truth to make it appear better than it is. There is plenty of real evidence out there in books by Norman Geisler, J.P. Moreland, William Lane Craig and many others. I'm afraid if I ever presented any of the Truth through the methods in ANY of the "Examine the Evidence" books, I would be quickly defeated by my non-Christian friends. Mr. Muncaster does poor exegesis when referencing the Bible, therefore coming up with a lot of wishful thinking as to the passages' meaning, and relating it to science. I'm sure the author did an honest job with his evidences, but his explanations are on very shaky ground. A moderately knowledgeable skeptic would have no trouble defeating the author's apologetic. I purchased a few "Examine the Evidence" books by Mr. Muncaster, and I found all my purchases disappointing in this same way. Try Norman Geisler's "Unshakeable Foundations" as an introductory book to defending your faith instead of this.

Science: Was the Bible Ahead of It's Time
This book was packed with easy to understand facts. Mr.Muncaster has to unique way of writing so even the novice can understand without all the fluff that other authors tend to use. I highly recommend this book to those looking to build their faith. It's fascinating to actually see documented scientific evidence contained in the Bible two thousand years before modern science existed.
