The suggested remedies require an act of the legislature.
The suggested remedies almost all require an act of the legislature. The problems derive from the ego and training and self protection habits of the legal profession. The legislature is composed of many lawyers and will not act. Citizen passage of a propositions is essential, part of which will be citizen insistence on citizen review of fees and performance. An uphill fight, which can be won, to the benefit of all. WaltonCA@aol.com

Forests to Fight Poverty offers guidelines, but no solutions
Forests to Fight Poverty began with a questionnaire to United Nations Development Program resident representatives to assess the usefulness of a book outlining the interwoven problems of poverty and forest destruction. The resident representatives agreed that there is a need for such a text and provided information about the needs of smallholder farming families in their countries. It is immediately clear that no one global solution will apply to all nations. This book begins with the implication that sustaining the forest can in turn sustain the people who live in and near the forest. It goes on to identify general principles for forest management that should apply globally. For example, the any management scheme should be monitored for its success and able to be altered in response to the data collected. The authors recommend that governments work with the local people and non governmental organizations to create policies that can sustain the forest. However, it is not clear to me that any real solutions can be generated when so many groups are trying to be heard. This approach also implies a true democratic society, which is certainly not in existence in all developing countries with threatened forests. Forests to Fight Poverty gives a comprehensive look at deforestation and forest management , but it is very dry reading. Only the truly dedicated reader will find the will to get through this book.

Four on the Floor
Published in Paperback by William A Thomas Braille Bookstore (December, 1990)
Author: Ralph M. McInerny
Amazon base price: $23.60
Average review score:

Okay, but repetitive
This book is easy to read in that it contains four short stories or "novellas". However the plots are predictable and the style of writing leaves you saying "What?" The stories could be more original and the writing style more imaginative. If you want a real mystery try "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

A decent primer
Ralph Moore writes from his experiences church planting in Hawaii with the Foursquare denomination. His perspective in this book (not to mention his theology) is very obviously shaped by his formative spiritual experiences in the Jesus movement of teh 1970's. The first half of the book is slow, but the second half is much better.

Though few&far between, this mystery has its moments
On the surface, Wyler, Indiana is a quiet town where everyone knows their neighbors. Homes and cars are never locked and the crime rate is so low it is statistically insignificant. Beneath the veneer of friendliness, Wyler shares much of the social ills beleaguering the nation. There are two competent attorneys living in town, Andrew Broom and Frank McGough, who loath each other. Their feelings towards one other causes Andrew's partner, and Frank's daughter to hide their romance.

Two events shake up the townsfolk. Someone slashes the throat of Andrew's law clerk with her corpse found inside the car of cemetery worker Will Foley. Since the married Will also had an affair with the victim, the police have enough circumstantial evidence to arrest Will. Andrew's nephew accepts the defense role because he believes his client is being framed.

The town is also burying its wealthiest citizens. Frank is handling the affluent estate, but Andrew throws a curve when he produces the grieving widow with a will that gives the multi-million dollar estate to her. The feud is just starting to heat up between Frank and Andrew.

HEIRS AND PARENTS, the sixth Broom novel, retains the fun and enjoyment of the previous five as it highlights Midwestern small town life in a wholesome way. The rivalry between the lawyers is amusing even as it ties together the well-developed double plot lines. Ralph McInerny, author of the Father Dowling mysteries, shows his abilities by using this elaborate technique to develop a delightful novel that enhances a strong series.

A review of hostage one
This book was full of non-stop action and thrilled the reader from beginning to end. I found it hard to put the book down. There was gun-play, sex, police chases, and many more things in this novel that made it one of the most interresting books that I have read in a long time. The main characters have to figure out who the enemy was and where they were going to strike.

Why so large?
I am a University of Minnesoota student and we use this text for our introductory Human Anatomy course. (Unfortunately they came out with a new edition and I couldn't sell it back to the bookstore.) Strictly in terms of the content this book was average because I often needed more information on certain aspects of the human anatomy. My real frustration was due to the fact that I feel the publisher should have supplied a carrying case specifically designed to carry such a large, awkward book. I realize that the size contributed to larger pictures but I feel it was a bit overboard! Finally, as I mentioned before, a new edition came out very recently. The new book resembles the previous edition too much. It's unfortunate we live in such a capitalistic society as to allow such a situation to take place..

Iridology, the Diagnosis from the Eye
This book could be considerably better helper to the practicioneer, if would concentrate practical operations, but no fuzzy theoretical aspects. Methods of return effect on an iris with the purpose of improving a condition of organs and systems practically are not circumscribed. Besides, the quality of a photo could be best. But, in common, the book is usable.
