Sioux Winter Count: A 131-Year Calendar of Events
Published in Paperback by Naturegraph Pub (June, 2003)
Authors: Roberta Carkeek Cheney, Kills Two, and Ralph Shane
Amazon base price: $8.95
Average review score:

One of the best preserved Native American calendars
Winter Counts were the historical calendars of the Sioux Nation. An historian, appointed by the tribe, drew one pictograph on a buffalo or deer skin at the end of each winter season. The Big Missouri Winter Count is housed in the Sioux Museum in Rapid City, South Dakota and is one of the best preserved of all these Native American calendars. This winter count calendar commemorates 131 years (1796 to 1926) in the lives of the Sioux bands who lived along the Missouri River, spanning a century which brought devastating changes for them. Sioux Winter Count: A 131-year Calendar Of Events is a superbly produced, informative study of that calendar and will prove to be of immense interest to students of Native American culture in general, and the Sioux Nation in particular.

a typical green high rise
No wonder, there is only one in this world high rise inside which
its running cost is 1/3 of a typical normal office buildings. That is why Sir norman Foster gain so much reputation in Architecture field and Building Services Field. Unfortunatly,
This book is written in Germany. It is very difficult for a English reader to understand it.

More Fun to Read Than an Encyclopedia
As an elementary school principal and collector of alphabet books (670 in a collection and 900 "bibliographed"), this one ranks in my top 10 favorites. Author Jerry Pallotta and Illustrator Ralph Masiello have penned and drawn, respectively, several unusual alphabet books. This contribution eclipsed even The Yucky Reptile Alphabet Book.

Each letter of the alphabet is assigned to a skull. The reader is challenged to figure out to which mammal does the skull belong. That's just the beginning. Questions, information, and challenging art dare the reader-detective to do, what all educators want their students to do, THINK. E.g. The V page begins, "V is for. . . Does this page make you wonder what type of blood you have?" The illustration is a small skull perched on top of a gravestone in the night with a hint of a full moon. Hmmm, even adult alphabet book readers might find this skull challenging to identify.

Some critics might be put off by the addition of hidden presidential pictures in the illustrations! Not I. Children who would be engaged in this alphabet book will strut confidence in finding and identifying U.S. presidents in the illustrations. (Yes, our children can multi-task in their thinking and in their studies!)

As I have purchased alphabet books for older children in my family, I always found it difficult to find ones that engaged and intrigued the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. This one will be given frequently to children I know in this age group.

Thank you, Jerry Pallotta and Ralph Masiello, for giving sophistication to alphabet books that can keep children of all ages engaged in thinking, reading, and learning.

Superbly researched
This is a wonderful history of the social gospel movement and how it dealt with the issue of race. Most noteworthy, in my opinion, is its wonderful bibliography - combined with the citations, this totals over 100 pages, providing great references for anyone who wishes to research the topic (as I recently did for a class).

Crucial Ethical Issues of Today's Technology and Science
This is such a timely and needed publication. The book offers insightful chapters by authors who are scholars within this area of study. Other chapters offer insight into today's world of technology and science. Remaining chapters provide insightful perspectives by authors that incorporate the ethical issues involved in both technology and science. The authors and publisher, I believe, are TOTALLY on the right track with their belief that this is a very crucial publication for today's society. The first chapter by Morton Winston, "Children of Invention," tells the reader what is going on currently in our society within the area of ethics, technology, and science; where we were, where we are now, and why we need to look at this for our future. This publication is ground breaking. With our society's current stance of available access to technology and developments in science our ethical decision-making related to these disciplines ARE our future; the authors of this book have provided us with excellent topics and issues to "Begin the Discussion."

Concise Reference
This is an excellent text and reference about the study and examination of soils. Some chapters are difficult to read but all are packed with great information about the study of soils. The classification of soils is covered in depth with the USDA Soil Taxonomy system and less throughly with other systems. The figures and tables included are pertinent and relevant. I'd ask for more figures and tables to help illustrate topics covered in the text. Additional comparisons and analysis between classification systems would also be welcome for advanced studies of soils and environmental issues.
Still 5 stars for it's class!

Solomon: Falcon of Sheba: The Tombs of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba Discovered

Author: Ralph Ellis

An exciting and breathtaking read
Solomon: Falcon Of Sheba by Ralph Ellis is an exciting and iconoclastic tour of Biblical history, archaeological evidence, and legend. The reader will acquire a significantly broader metaphysical understanding of Egypt's legendary monarchs in an exhaustive and complex study which draws the reader out along an amazing archaeological and historical trail concluding that real story of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba is not as we have commonly or traditionally known it. An exciting and breathtaking read, Solomon: Falcon Of Sheba is especially recommended to students of Biblical Archaeology. Also very highly recommended are two earlier works by Ralph Ellis: Jesus, Last Of The Pharaohs ...

A page-turner!
Ralph Winters spent 70 years in the movie business engaged in the critical but often under-appreciated job of film editor. His credits include Ben Hur, King Solomon's Mines, Gaslight and Victor/Victoria. The book tells about how these movies and others were made --- in a way that keeps it lively and informative. Winters is now 92 --- hopefully just beginning a new literary career.

Songs and Tunes of the Wilderness Road
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications, Inc. (08 December, 1999)
Authors: Ralph Lee Smith and Madeline Macneil
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Dulcimer roots
I bought this book because it traces the history of the mountain dulcimer westward on the wilderness trail. Madeline MacNeil offers a map and directions and black and white photos to direct you on a modern pilgrimage of this trail, if you would like to experience the modern trail first hand. This is a trip I would like to take in the future. The history is straightforward and clear, and dulcimer tabulatures are given for tunes that came from different locations along the trail. Fascinating material to be used for entertainers, reenactors, storeytellers and dulcimer players. Audiences enjoy knowing brief histories and how tunes fit them. There are many early tunes in this instruction manual. The tab is clear and many early appalachian tunings are used. The only recommendation that I would make, is it would be nice if Madeline MacNeil and Ralph Smith had made an accompanying CD of all the tunes in the book. I would buy it!
