John Carlos Rowe takes a fascinating look at some of America's greatest literary minds and discusses their positions concerning the two major politcal movements of the 19th century: abolition and women's rights. Using Emerson as a starting point(hence the title), he details the writers' political comittment and efficacy.Authors discussed include Melville, Poe, Douglass, Whitman and Twain. This is a fascinating look at the writers, their times, and their politics.

In Remembrance
Many times great heroes are forgotten in favour of more popular ones; however, in this book, Wayne Ralph presents not only an excellent account of Barker's war career, but also his life before and after the war. The reader is aquainted also with the facts that for years after the war deeply hurt most air force pilots. This book is the best I have read about William Barker.

Barren Lives

"Barren Lives" is the REAL LIFE we are all afraid of.

I believe that "Barren Lives" could never be fully understood by any foreigner. I mean foreigner as someone who has not lived and grown up in Brazil. "Barren Lives" deals with the essence of human souls, when there is nothing left to believe in, nothing left to look foward to, nothing to relish, nothing to praise, when it all comes down not to being humans, as we're not, but to being animals. It sounds and looks very deep and poetic, but the strenght of this novel comes from its veracity. It is a a story that has happened to several families of people in Brasil. It doesn't make us, readers, wonder about our fragility or our values. It wants to sting us with the indignation of living our mediocre lives. It exposes human mediocrity. Far beyond social critic, it is a social attack. Ramos is dry: he saves up words, writing solely what's essential. He would condense it even more, to short sentences, litlle phrases, single words. He wouldn't even write, if he had the chance. A real genius of literature who has captured sentiments with completely detachment, subverting his own magistral reasoning. A book that MUST be read, although I couldn't trust an English version of it

The battle is the pay-off
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: Ralph Ingersoll

Used price: $0.45
Collectible price: $1.90

The Ernie Pyle of North Africa
Captain Ingersoll represents a point of view we haven't seen in this country for 50 years, but now may again be relevant. The United States army is the American people at war. Ingersoll takes us through the details of adjusting to the army and life in the outdoors and finally of going into battle. He states many of the operational details in the same way that Ernie Pyle used to do in "This is your war." Ingersoll is convinced of the righteousness of his cause against an evil enemy and takes for granted the same opinions in his countrymen. The book exudes victory at every line. There are no graphics, except that the end papers give a large map of the North African campaign as he knows it. This is a good primary historical source.

High praise..and this book deserves it
In my view words fail to describe the contribution this book has made
towards supporting the dynamic reality of the alien presence. The
academic credentials of the authors speak for themselves and are, I
think, unparalleled. The book maintains throughout a "no
nonsense" tone. Sensationalism is totally absent and yet the
pages are saturated with electrifying excitement. There are no
"fairy tales" told here.

For me the high point of the book
was the chapter entitled "Case 42 - the Contactee"...but
almost all the others followed close behind.

As one who has been
monitoring alien activities around the globe for more than thirty
years I am of the opinion that "Beyond Earth" is a work that
anyone even remotely interested in the alien presence would wish to
read. Hopefully the publisher will one day come to the same conclusion.

Don't leave this book behind!
If you read the Left Behind series (and even if you don't) read this book. I do have to correct what was written in the synopsis on this site: "Margaret Nutting Ralph attempts to correct what she claims are misinterpretations and misreadings of Scriptures that deal with the end of the world". NO, it's not what SHE claims are misinterpretations. Please remember that she is teaching a contextualist way to read scripture. This is not something she invented. This is what the Catholic Church teaches. If you pick up a copy of the study edition of the New American Bible, you will find the same viewpoint. You'll also find it in the JErome Biblical Commentary. Also if you read the books by Raymond Brown.

Brilliant Blasphemy
I first came across this book at a friend's house while peaking on acid. At the time, I believed in God, and was reverent of all this creation business we find ourselves in. This book looks at God and It's creation through a very jaundiced eye, with compelling, horrifying and undeniably adept illustrations and text. It took me years to be able to see God again beyond the film of revulsion and fear this book drew down over my eyes, but my faith is stronger for it. I think Steadman would laugh if he read that last sentence, and I think he should, too--but believe me when I tell you that the first time you pick up this book, you should be solid in your faith, and you should NOT be on LSD! :-)

This is a great book, it is very informative and interesting
I am a student at the University of MN and I am taking the Biology of Cancer course from Dr. McKinnell. I have enjoyed this book very much and find that the information provided gives me an understanding that has helped me realize how deadly cancer is and how I can live my life to prevent it. I recommend it highly.
