Good read to get started and get a good overview
This book gives a good introduction to argumentation theory and its twists and turns over the course of its existence. I found it helpful to get started, especially coming from a completely different field. It gives the essence of Toulmin and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca but I would have liked to see a bit more on Austin and Searle. But then again the references mentioned are very extensive and can be followed up. All in all a good book if a bit pricey for students (whatever happened to the paperback cover?)

Two Top Scholars Collaborate to Produce Beautiful Book
This is much more than a biography of Vasari. It uses Vasari as the pivot around which the author develops an intricate account of art and cultural politics in Florence and more generally Tuscany, in the sixteenth-century. The relationships between Vasari and Michelangelo, and Grand Duke Cosimo are well-developed and informative. For art historians, there will be little new inforamtion revealed, but it is all presented in a beautiful package. Ralph Lieberman, a highly distinguished scholar of Venetian architecture in his own right, here acts in another capacity, in which he is equally as distinguished, photographer. The photos give us Florence as we always want to see it, romantic, dramatic, but with an eye toward architectural detail.

Native American Man for All Seasons
Most of us non-native Americans know the names of a few American Indians mainly because of their accomplishments in battlefield. Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Crazy Horse, and Chief Joseph to name a few. There are a couple of other names that we know mainly because of a single event or an accomplishment. Sacajawea was known for guiding Lewis and Clark - and for her new dollar coin.

Chief Washakie of the Shoshones was a valiant warrior but he was also a leader and statesman who guided his people from the simpler times of the early 19th century into the 20th century. The Chief recognized early that his world was changing with the settling of his West buy european immigrants. He knew that, while he could not keep the settlers out, he could influence his people's destiny.

This book is a personal look at this unique character. It is written by decendants of Chief Washakie. While it lacks the detail of an academic treatise, it conveys the spirit and culture of another time and place.

One thing that repeatedly struck me is, in the scheme of things, this was so recent. Chief Washakie came to lead the Shoshones about 160 years ago. He died in 1900 at the age of 102.

Another aspect that I enjoyed was that Chief Washakie encountered so many of the characters that we identify with the settling of the West: Kit Carson, Scajawea, Jim Bridger and many others.

If you are interested in a historical treatment of Chief Washakies life with lots of dates and maps, this isn't it. If you are interested in a book with reverence and feeling for someone who is relatively unknown yet perhaps the greatest leader in the history of the American West, read this book.

Photos & Stories From When Timber Was King
This is a classic for anyone interested in the history of logging in the Pacific Northwest. Together with Andrews other companion book, "This Was Sawmilling" the reader will gain a great understanding how trees were harvest, transported to mills and converted into the resources which built this Country. There's hundreds of wonderful photos from the woods along with many contraptions which loggers created to make their tasks either easier or more likely, more productive. Can you imagine a raft 1000 feet long and 30 feet wide and deep made out of logs laced together with huge chains? These structures containing millions of board feet of trees would be created in the far Northwest and floated down the coast to San Diego, CA and further. There's photos in the book. There's a great photo of a logger standing on the top of a tree hundreds of feet in the air just after he has completed preparation for high-lead logging. The book is separated into geographic regions from British Columbia and each of the States of the Northwest. It has numerous poems written about loggers. (Please don't call them lumber-jacks. I never heard a man who works in the woods called a lumber-jack all my years going up in Oregon. Yet a recent TV show about the worlds most dangerous jobs constantly referred to them a lumber-jacks.) Distraction of this classic includes the lack of a table of contents, index, and the disconnect between the photos and the stories. Which is to be expected. Andrews rarely had photos of the people in the stories and vice versa. Why this short-comings. Superior Publishing printed many of these books by folks who simply wanted to document the hard work of others. Regardless whether it was logging, railroading, or shipping they were willing to publish the books. Thank goodness they did or we'd never have had these classics. If you have an interest in the history of logging this book will be a great addition to your collection.

A good work of honesty
I had to read this for my theatre department at school. But as I did I found that through the course of this play, Brecht gives a sense of honesty in all of the chracters. Weather that honesty is good or bad, it is a truthfull play that brings forth many aspects of seraching for what is good and bad.

Ralph, wine & pen
Ralph Steadman is a wonderful artistic talent. In this book he combines his love of wine, humor, and his comedic illustrations. If you are a true wine lover (i.e. someone who just doesn't take the whole wine tasting thing too seriously, but knows what she or he likes) you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is also a wonderful gift for wine-lovin' friends.

Enjoy!

A Pure Delight
I received the book as a gift. "Oh great! Another cute story about the cowboy culture", I thought. But I felt I'd better read it lest I hurt the feelings of the giver.

What a pleasant surprise. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a long time.

Ralph Reynolds can tell a wonderful tale. The only issue I'd take is with the title. It might have been more appropriately titled, "Growing Up Human". His stories were so human and touching that the "cowboy" could have been anywhere anytime. It just happened he was "the Luna Kid".

Pure pleasure. (I would have given it five stars, but I'm reserving that score for Hemingway.)

Handbook of Adolescent Health Risk Behavior (Issues in Clinical Child Psychology)

Megabook on adolescent risk behaviors
As a student I found the book to be loaded with facts and useful information. The flow of content was a bit disjointed due no doubt to the multiple authors. It is definitely not a "cheerful" book. Covers trends, theories and various problem behaviors such as tobacco use, suicide and homelessness. Even though it is a wonderful resource, it seems a bit dated in the fields of adolescent violence and juvenile justice.

Interesting reading for the open minded Christian
This book was thoughtful, provocative, innovative, and progressive in its ideas. The history was well researched and well presented. It is a book designed to break the barriers that modern day Christians have put up for the church.

Dr. Hawkins presents the traditional ideas of the church, where they originated, and why they are there. Then, he explains the historical reasons for the ideas that we have and the Biblical reasoning for the traditions that are sometimes lost in today's generation. This book is meant for those who are concerned with the present day church and how it is supposed to be.

The main theme throughout is UNITY. How nice it is to see unity of the church presented in such a logical, loving way. I wish more pastors were educated in the history of church traditions, why we have some of the traditions we have, and how they apply to the twenty-first century church. It is only through unity that we can truly become the church that we were meant to be.
