Postscript to adventure : the autobiography of Ralph Connor

The exciting life story of Canada's most beloved author.
Postscript to Adventure is truly the appropriate name for the life story of Charles William Gordon. Readers of his novels, written under the pen name Ralph Connor, will recognize the real life events which became the basis for many of his stories. This autobiography tells of Gordon's life on the Canadian fronteer, rise to reknown as an author, service during WWI, and how he had an influence on the course of world events. Just as if in a "Horatio Alger" story, Gordon rose from simple beginnings to become Canada's most beloved author and the contemporary of Prime Ministers and Presidents.

The Return of Rotten Ralph!
Rotten Ralph the mischievous cat returns in another great story in the series. When a touring Faire comes to town, super-confident (and lazy?) Ralph loses all the booth games to his cousin Percy, and Percy gives the prizes to the beloved Sarah.
Ralph cheats (he's sometimes clever, sometimes just downright rotten) and wins some games, but he eventually owns up to his dishonesty. After making it up to the booth operators, Ralph finally--and honestly--wins a prize at the dunking booth.

I love the Rotten Ralph series, especially for Nicole Rubel's rich, color-saturated illustrations. She uses beautiful, unusual colors (sometimes recalling Matisse), and her sense of fun complements Jack Gantos' underplayed humor. Gantos wrote a great line for Sarah on the last page: "'Oh, Ralphie,' she said. 'You don't need any practice at being my winner.'" 48 pages divided into four small chapters. The jacket informs us that "an animated series based on...Rotten Ralph is now appearing on television in over 20 countries. In France, Ralph is known as Ralph la Racaille (Ralph the Rascal." I recommend also Nicole Rubel's great "Cyrano the Bear."

The Practice of Printing: Letterpress and Offset
Published in Hardcover by Bennett & McKnight Pub Co (February, 1971)
Author: Ralph Weiss Polk

The standard letterpress printing manual
The most ubiquitous letterpress printing manual of the twentieth century, and one of the better ones. This is the standard, in print for over 40 years, from which most current letterpress printers first learned, and is an indispensable reference for the print shop. Although out of print, it is readily available, in one or another of its many editions, from most book arts dealers and online sources. In later years, it was distributed by the Kelsey Co. as the advanced printing manual for their mass-market presses. By 1971 (the edition you've found here at Amazon) it was updated to de-emphasize handset type, and was re-issued as "The Practice of Printing: Letterpress & Offset". If you are primarily interested in letterpress printing, try to get one of the earlier editions. It is unlikely that this book will be back in print per se, but certainly check Amazon zShops or Auctions for copies available for sale.

Father Dowling flock will enjoy
Father Roger Dowling leaves St. Hilary's Parish for his annual retreat with the Athanasians, a Catholic religious order that includes seven aging priests with no new blood in years. Though the long-term outlook appears to be the same as what happened to the Shakers, the small order owns the rights to Marygrove, a grand estate near Chicago given to the Athanasians by a late business mogul.

However, the very value of the property makes Marygrove in demand by avarice phonies including the grandson of the order's late benefactor. All of these souls want to use the estate for personal gain. Though each one of these outsiders will do almost anything to obtain an advantage, one of them resorts to murder, killing two people. Father Dowling investigates the homicides in an effort to determine who broke the Commandment and to thwart any other slayings.

The insight into a small dying religious order and their secular squabbles provide interesting depth to the who-done-it story line. Though Father Dowling remains a charming character he seems less sharp in PRODIGAL FATHER than usual perhaps because Mrs. Murkin is not around much to murky the waters. Still the Father Dowling flock will enjoy his latest amateur sleuth tale.

Good for studying
I needed this book for an online course. It was interesting that this book could spur so many new ideas that I have now. I learned that many historical figures that I have admired as authors, performers, and scientists, could be adult educators because of the stances to think, to change, and to influence others in society.

Elliot Wave Theory explains most Stock Market Behavior
The charts shown in this book are from Elliot's time, namely the depression [ie. the 1930's]. You might think that they have no bearing to today's markets. However, one of the biggest problems with market timing is forecasting a bear market trend; especially a short one. That was my biggest problem with applications involving market behavior analyzed as Elliot waves. This book helps solve that problem by helping the technician analyze long bear market trends where wave counting is extremely critical.

The book helped my timing immensely, so that I don't get caught in false bottoms anymore and can recognize the top of markets, especially with respect to stock trading volume. The writer is at his best when relating to the market and analyzing trends. There is a long biography included in this volume, which I found tedious and boring. His analysis does have some contradictions, however, the charts he presents should help anyone with a high school education and good visual skills become a better trader.

Pulp-like adventure on the insect ruled world of Venus.
Farley is among a number of early pulp writers who, like Edgar Rice Burroughs, indulged in a combination of fantasy and science to produce an exciting tale. Myles Cabot, an earthman on Venus, must overcome adversity to win the hand of a Venusian princess. Great fun!

Ralph Rapson: Sixty Years of Modern Design

Humanizing a modernist icon
While most monographs focus on raising an architect to that of a deity, the story of Rapson remains quite simply a story. Along with the drawings, buildings, and furniture which made Rapson famous (which is well displayed), a timeline of Rapson's professional and personal life allows the reader to gain more insight as to some of the formitive forces of his designs. As any purveyor or architecture may know, design is quite interdisciplinary, and often design descisions are based on firmly rooted 'everyday-life' ideals and experience, not solely as a spark of genious to the gifted few. This book reflects not only the genioius of Rapson's work, but also the real life story which had an equally profound impact.
