Practice Guidelines in Primary Care 2002
This is the second edition of the Primary Care Guidelines. This useful pocket guide has been improved. I was given a copy of the first publication, and was happy to purchase the new edition. It is well researched, and heavily referenced for futher investigation of different topics.

I've repeatedly found it a good and rapid reference for many clinical problems. Useful for those in practice, and students alike. If you want a stark insight to patient care, look at the inside cover. It is a Health Care Delivery Report Card derived from HEDIS 2001 Effectiveness of Care Measures. We can rejoice in successes, but the failures in areas such as lipid control after an MI, comprehensive diabetes care, antidepressant medication management, and asthma medication management are sobering.

I look for to seeing it in an electronic form to access in a PDA.

Totalmente recomendable. La traducción al español es muy buena.

I studied under Professor Sims. His insight and original, analytical approach to manufacturing costing are enlightening. This volume should be used as an alternative approach to more traditional approaches of analyzing the costs of manufacturing.

The Presidency of John Adams

Displays John Adams as he really was, a great president
All U.S. presidents must confront and solve problems, some more unique than others. There are a few whose difficulties are unprecedented and will never recur again. John Adams was such a president and his effectiveness as a chief executive is often underestimated. When he took the oath of office, the nation was still young and in many ways not yet a nation. Regional differences, which sixty years later would explode into civil war, were powerful and could have led to a similar event during his administration. The governmental structure was idealistic, novel and untested. There were many who felt that it was unworkable, and with minimal communication infrastructure, it was difficult for the central government to project its' power quickly and effectively.
The framers of this government were highly talented, ambitious men, who were now faced with the task of governing. As history has shown us so many times, the talented revolutionary is often mediocre at governing. Political parties began to form and like all births, involved a great deal of fits and starts. George Washington commanded such respect that no one could reasonably hope to challenge his authority, and yet he was wore down by the political battles. Succeeding such a towering figure would have been difficult for anyone. Europe was also currently engaged in a general war as a consequence of the revolution in France, and there were strong forces driving the United States towards involvement.
Into this horrendous mix of conflicting forces, John Adams became president. There is no question that the crises he faced rank in the top five of all presidents. Forced to face and solve these problems, he performed admirably. There is no more telling measures of his success in that he angered many in both parties and one of his strongest enemies, Thomas Jefferson, continued his policies when he succeeded Adams.
Brown does an outstanding job of describing these circumstances, for without this knowledge it is impossible to understand how successful Adams was. He also describes many of the details of John Adams' relationship with his wife Abigail. Although the times dictated that women play secondary roles in society, it is clear that many women wielded substantial power behind the scenes, if only to provide the strength for her husband to do what was right. After reading this book, you cannot help but be impressed with the power and intelligence of Abigail Adams, one of the most talented first spouses that this country has ever had.
This book serves a necessary and overdue purpose. It shows John Adams as more than just an adequate successor to Washington, but as a president who stood firm and always placed the interests of the nation first. He was a great man, showing that many of the men who made the American revolution were also, and perhaps even more skilled, at making and executing a government. I will forever be in awe of their political genius.

nciples of Enhanced Heat Transfer
This book addresses "second generation heat transfer technology." Special surface geometry configurations (or fluid additives, or electric fields) provide increased heat transfer coefficients, relative to "old technology" plain surfaces. Enhancement technology may be used to secure either of two possible benefits: (1) More compact, lighter, or less expensive heat-exchangers, or (2) To obtain increased energy efficiency (reduced operating costs) in a system. The refrigeration, automotive, electronic equipment, and heat recovery industries are strong users of enhancement technology. Applications are emerging for the chemical process, electric power, and aerospace industries. The book will be useful to both design engineers, and researchers.
This book has three key purposes. To summarize the advancement of the technology in an organized manner, to define the "mechanism" by which the enhancement devices work, and to provide predictive equations. It provides a foundation for researchers seeking to model complex surface geometries. Nearly 200 figures and photographs are provided, which show enhanced heat transfer surfaces, and graphs of performance data. The book contains numerous example problems and contains a problem supplement. The only detailed book reference on the subject area.

An Exciting Study of an Important Mythological Figure
Kerenyi's book on Prometheus is among the most exciting monographs on a single mythological figure written since the mid-twentieth century. Kerenyi reviews the origins of the myth of Prometheus in early Greek poetry and the visual arts with thought-provoking references to other mythological, artistic, and literary traditions such as the Hittite, the Roman, and the German. Kerenyi worked closely with Carl Jung (see their jointly authored Introduction to a Science of Mythology) and the Jungian interest in archetypes is strongly refelcted in the present volume on Prometheus. This book is well-researched and well-written, worth reading not only for the information that it contains about the firebearer, but also for its method of analysis.

an indispensible part of any psychedelic library
This book contains the works of many of the pioneers of the psychedelic revolution not to be found anywhere else. While I read this several years ago, I am left with the impression that this one of the best sources of both scientific and/or spiritual writings by some of the greatest minds to survey the outer limits of the human psyche in one volume. Well worth the price. Get yours before it goes out of print!

Psychological Assessment: A Theory and Systems Approach
Published in Hardcover by Krieger Publishing Company (November, 1991)
Author: James Ralph Barclay
Amazon base price: $47.00
Used price: $21.97
Average review score:

Not what it first appears to be, but much better!
The unique value of this book is clearly not in the title. A better title might have been, "History and philosophy of psychological tests". The book is not a typical testing textbook for pre-professional teachers and psychologists. Rather, it covers the historical, logical, philosophical and epistemological basis for psychological testing. The content covered is not easily available in any other single source. For example, there are chapters on the logic of testing, historical paradigms, and specific areas of assessment, even pseudo-assessment is covered. Barclay goes through the assumptions and beliefs underlying testing in a coherent matter-of-fact way that causes one to challenge assertions in some of the popular literature on testing (e.g., "The Bell Curve"). Portions of the book have the potential to become classic in the psychological literature on testing. This book is a "must read" for anyone who wants to understand the psychological assessment process.
