C.J.S. Purdy's Fine Art of Chess Annotation and Other Thoughts
Published in Paperback by Thinkers' Press (December, 1992)
Author: Ralph Tykodi
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

great book for players under Elo 2000
This book contains 100 master games annotated by Purdy: 25 world championship games from Botvinnik to Spassky, 25 grandmaster games from tournaments, and 50 master games from Australasia. In his notes, Purdy tries to elucidate the ideas behind the players' moves rather than reeling off long variations of analysis. However, when required, Purdy did include analysis of his own. In this, he was very good as evidenced by his achievement of winning the first World Correspondence Chess Championship. The book also includes tips on playing the openings, middlegame, and endgame as well as the playing over of grandmaster games (a form of solitaire chess). Perhaps the most useful part of the book is Purdy's system of thinking which the student should use to decide upon his moves. Purdy developed his system many years before Jeremy Silman elaborated the Silman Thinking Technique in his book How to reassess your chess. Purdy's system of thinking is also discussed in more detail in his other book The Search for Chess Perfection. My only complaint with the book (a minor flaw) is that information about the tournament and year in which some of the games were played is not included. Highly recommended.

In depth history and current view of Cajun and Creole music
Exceptional history and current description of Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco music. Will be appreciated both by tourists new to Louisiana culture as well as by serious connoiseurs of folk music and traditions and of French language. Barry Jean Ancelet is both a distinguished professor at the University of Louisiana (Lafayette), as well as being a Cajun "Garrison Keillor" (of Prairie Home Companion fame).

The California Trail

Author: Ralph Compton
Amazon base price: $6.50

Hungry Californios
After the civil war Texans did not have much to work with except 5000 plus long horns grazing free and wild in the breaks, a tight thorny hug bush. The cattle belong to those who are brave and tough enough to get them out and then drive them through Indian nations over mountains and across deserts. The California Trail is such an adventure. A great read.

Nader give Canada some of its long overdue recognition
This book is as it says a "salute to Canada and Canadian achievement." It includes some well known, several lesser known and some unexpected Canadian firsts. A must for anyone who wants to understand more about Canada and does not want a textbook like book. It is well organized with short free standing sections and entries. In short, it is a very interesting book that gives a breif overview of Canadian achievement.

Case Studies in Applied Sport Psychology an Educational Approach: An Educational Approach
Published in Paperback by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (July, 1998)
Authors: Mark A. Thompson, Ralph A. Vernacchia, and William E. Moore
Amazon base price: $35.95

Delivers an insightful view of the mental side of sports!
The case studies provide an excellent flavor of the mental side of sports for all you "armchair" athletes and sports psychologists to savor. As a psychologist and self-proclaimed athlete, I was entertained and enlightened by the multitude of case studies that Thompson and Vernacchia chose to explore. I found myself relating my own sports-related challenges to those offered in the book. The funnest part was formulating my own hypotheses about the various issues that were presented in each case. This is a must read for anyone who has been frustrated by the challenges of competitive athletics. You're not alone! However, you might find that you're #1 competitor resides in the barriers that you have built in your own mind. Learn how to knock down, or atleast, get around those self-imposed barriers.

Case Studies in Neuroscience

Authors: Ralph F., Md. Jozefowicz and Robert G., MD Holloway
Amazon base price: $28.95
Average review score:

excellent for Medical Students.
Currently, I am a Neurology resident. I found those 27 cases, very well written and informative. The authors succeeded in guiding the reader to think about where is the lesion first, with helpful pictures and diagrams, then briefly touch on the disease and basic management. I believe every one going to a neurology rotation, or even a resident will find those 27 cases a great way to refresh his/her basic neurosciences, and best of all it is a very easy to memorize book.
