A true Ariadne's Thread
I first encountered Karl Kerenyi by way of another of his books, _Eleusis_, a study of the mysteries of Demeter and Persephone. Let me tell you, I love the way that man's mind worked. In the case of Eleusis, and also in the case of Dionysos, there are secrets that the celebrants of the rites took to their graves. But rather than just say "we'll never know what really went on", Kerenyi leaves no stone unturned in an attempt to figure it out. Using myths, art, and "urban legends" from ancient times, which often dance around secret subjects, Kerenyi puts together a more coherent picture of the religions of these ancient deities. The myths and art may dance around the real mysteries, but if you "dance" around enough and see the material from enough different angles, you can get a pretty good idea of what isn't being said.

Dionysos originated on the island of Crete, where he was considered to be the same deity as Zeus, and was a dying and resurrected god who presided over mead and the mysteries of death and rebirth. From there, his cult was taken all over the Mediterranean world, and changed along the way. His rites changed, too, and Kerenyi shows us all of the different ways he was worshipped, from the bull-sacrifice on Crete (with a great chapter on the god's notorious wife Ariadne) to the roving maenads of rural Greece, to the sacred tragedies and comedies of classical Athens. Then we see Dionysos again on the walls of the Villa dei Misteri in Pompeii.

In a way, _Dionysos_ is differently focused than _Eleusis_, where the author was trying to reconstruct what happened on one particular night. This book is more protean, following the thread of the Dionysus cult throughout distance and time as it changes. Recommended to anyone who loves mythology.

A work of art, both the book, and its subject.
Karl Kerenyi has a way about him. A way to touch the reader with word of clinical precision that none the less convey emotion and power to the reader that is probably as much to do with translator Ralph Manheim as the departed author himself.

The subject of Dionysos and the startling workings of his ancient religion are given thorough study, and one is left with a feeling of having experienced the god himself through the writings of the author to whom the subject is so dear. Read this book as an insight into a bygone era, an insight into the human need for religion, an insight into Dinoysos the God, and most especially, an insight into your own mind.

Discovered Alive: The Story of the Chinese Redwood

Discovering the Chinese Redwood was great!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and came across it as I was looking for more information on the Dawn Redwood, which is the focus of the book. This book tells the story of a man that was also on a search for information on the tree and where his search eventually leads him-back to the home of the Dawn Redwood-China! I highly recommend this book and the author is held as an authority on the history of the Dawn Redwood-because if you surf the web you will find many accounts that are nowhere near being true! Discover this book!

entertaining and educational
The redwoods of the world, so few remain today. Gittlen's travel was personal and touched a core inside of me because I am a redwood lover too. Chances had it arranged that the Chinese Redwood to be saved and propagated throughout the world, and Gittlen further did redwoods favor by documenting the people, places and events which led to today's preservation efforts on any redwood species. A great read for amateur botanists. Hope that one day I can repeat or expand Gittlen's journey myself.

Wonderful!
Discovering The Natural Laws That Govern The Universe really gave me a clear understanding of how the universe works. This is a book I will turn to again and again for answers to my metaphysical questions.

A REMARKABLE BOOK
This is truly a remarkable and worthwhile book to read. Reading about these natural laws has given me much greater insight into the workings of these unseen energy forces and how to apply them in my daily life. "Discovering the natural laws that govern the Universe" has provided me with another very valuable tool to assist myself and to understand my fellow men. I really recommend it.

This book is great
It is hard to describe this book without sounding like a bookseller. It is explains the most complex concepts in very simple and elegant "cartoons", so it has the additional advantage of being fun to read. I read the whole thing just a couple of months.

WOW
Some concepts, seemingly obscure and esoteric became intuitively obvious with this book. A great ``picture book'' that will certainly complement any standard textbook in chaotic dynamics. I may sound like a bookseller. But, hey, this book is good!

The best book for a beginner
In this book (the twelfth edition) every economic subject is very well explained without difficult mathemayical concepts. People who like the mathematical approach can find something in the appendix. There are a lot of examples about real facts happened to real companies (Microsoft,...) or organization (OPEC...). The logic approach and the examples are very usefull for a beginner that first of all has to understand the main concepts rather than struggling in a difficult language or math.

A very beautiful book.
The authors have explained all principles with remarkable ease taking numerous to the point examples.

Excellent for all who love great literature & great minds
I read this book after final exams for some reason Emerson and the whole American Renassiance mystic was calling to me...I finished the novel packed my bags and drove straight to Concord, Mass...The tour guides at the various sites I visited where perplexed by my numerous inquires...This book drove such a desire in me to learn and love literature from that period...Well worth the time and the read...and make every effort to visit Concord when your done it adds to the experience...

Lots to amuse and inform
As its title suggests, this scrupulously researched tome portrays Emerson as perhaps the most stable and secure (and kindly) among a group of eccentric, sometimes borderline crazy writers and thinkers. A must for any interested in the transcendental movement, or in perhaps its most distinguished man of letters.

The Emperor's Angry Guest
The range of emotion you feel as a reader has its highs and lows to such an extent that one can not put it down until it is finished. The real things in war are not always felt by those who never went to war, but in this book you feel what war is all about, including all of its flaws.

well written quick paced no bull account of the US Military
The Emperors Angry Guest was an excellent book and I would recommend it. Mr.Knox narrated his story well. The book was carefully documented. A very good example of the US government's propensity in not paying close attention what is really, truly going on with their own sons lives. These kids were 18-20 years old. The Battan Death March was real and so were the men who were forced at gunpoint to participate in it. A very good historical account...

Excellent and comprehensive text
This is one of the most comprehensive and clearly written textbooks for graduate level behavior science methods I have come across. I learned from this book myself and, now as a professor, I will be using it in my graduate class.

The Grand Daddy of Methods Books
This is the one that you'll keep after the class is over. You'll come across some odd methodological issue 5 years after you buy the book and it'll be in there, explained perfectly. The section on interpretation of interactions is particularly great. You can't learn more about power and meta-analysis more efficiently than by reading the relevant chapters in here. The ethics chapter is more entertaining than anything like it in any other text. I've been teaching from this book for 9 years and still get students calling saying thanks for making them buy it.

WRITTEN BY A PRO
Author Ralph Singleton knows his stuff. He is not a "wannabe" producer (check out his credits on the IMDb!). Do what I did--take the complete 'do-it-yourself course' with the Scheduling book, Workbook and Forms book. Computer budgeting software is great -- but this book actually teaches you HOW to budget -- not just put numbers in columns.

An excellent guide for new and experienced producers.
I used this book in the recent shooting of a feature film, and found it and the separately-available workbooks very helpful. The workbooks use examples from an actual film budget ("The Conversation"); the text is clear, compelling, accurate and up-to-date. Best of the "how to" film production books I have seen and used.
