Delightful and thorough
TABLES OF CONTENT is assembled of chapters covering separate parties, given by separate hosts, as part of the New York Public Library's fundraising efforts. Each host proposes a dinner with a literary theme, and then the guests are assigned to the different dinners. The hosts underwrite the events, and the guests pay the library to attend. What these meals have in common is that they all are carefully designed, serving gourmet foods and excellent wines.

One set of guests may find themselves eating Moroccan cuisine in a dining room that has been turned into a tent straight out of Ali Baba. Another group may find that their host has recreated a meal taken directly from the writings of M.F.K. Fisher.

TABLES OF CONTENT takes the best of the best of these parties, and assembles reports on them in this single volume. The book then becomes a blueprint for great parties, and it's also a mouthwatering treat.

Must Have!
Along with Steadman's unique and inspiring art, this book explores the land of the weirrd....humans who once entertained the boring people with their bizarre and unusual oddities. With each tale of a sideshow star, Steadman draws us a picture and weaves an eloquent and highly entertaining story about his subject. Steadman is literate as all hell. When you're done with this be sure to check out his latest...DOODAA - a triography. No doubt this man has a bundle of fun with himself - his mind is a treasure chest of wacky good times and he seems to have a great grasp on our human reality - every inch of dystopic madness. With books like this, Steadman does his part, in keeping the rest of us sane and amused.

Excellent account of tankers in Vietnam
Tank Sergeant is a very readable account of what it was like to be a tanker in Vietnam. If you are familiar with tank operations in previous wars, you'll be surprised by their use in Vietnam. Good coverage of AFV use as well. Highly recommended.

More understandable version of the Tao Te Ching
I have listened to a good translation of the Tao Te Ching along with some commentary about it, which was very interesting, but some ideas from China before Christ do not translate do today's world directly. This audio book makes the Tao more useful in today's world, especially for leading groups, including therapy groups such as I do. Especially helpful are the anecdotes by a leading expert in leadership which follow each passage. I would recommend this to anyone who has read or listened to the Tao and wants to understand it better. It is especially easy to listen to in the car.

This is a book your best friend will borrow and never return
Like the other two books in this series by Ralph Woods, this book contains many hundreds of poems, speeches, and other literary golden nuggets that truly are a treasure to any family that reads. My only problem with this book is trying to get friends to return it after they have "borrowed" it to check a quotation or a poem. Mine goes to wedding rehersals, funerals, christenings; wherever people who value words are gathered together. My library shelf would seem bare without a copy.

The Original, Definitive Text on William James
Perry's text is the original, definitive expression of William James' philosophy, outside of the writings of James -- a founder father of the philosophical genre of pragmatism, contemporary American social thought and modern psychology -- himself. Despite the multitude of books written on and about James and his ideas since, no serious student of William James should be without or ignore this one. It is the Genesis-text, as it were, of Jamesean studies.

Perry organizes and effectively analyzes the whole array of James' diverse writings (including reprints of some tremendous and now otherwise difficult to find selections), enabling any reader to obtain a comprehensive and detailed understanding of James' philosophy. At the same time, Perry infects his analysis with a solid and enduring illustration of James's personality, without ever becoming either trite or merely philosophical biography.

Perry's own skills as a writer are evident in such passages as the following, which is a most memorable description of the breadth and depth of Jame's character: "[James] called himself empiricist, pluralist, pragmatist, individualist, but whenever he did so he began at once to hanker after the fleshpots of rationalism, monism, intellectualism, socialist. He liked body in his philosophizing, and he hated to leave out anything that had either flavor or nutritive value. He was much more afraid of thinness than he was of inconsistency."

In one or two places, the serious James scholar might have a difference of opinion with Perry's analysis, whether historical or philosophical, but all philosophy texts are susceptible to such criticism, and Perry's is less susceptible than most. Indeed, it will be by treating Perry's text as a sound starting place that the inexperienced or unfamiliar reader might become such an adept analyst and capable of interpreting James' life, character and thought so well.
