Excellent tribute to a lost people.
Dr. Ralph Pastore, an archaeologist from Memorial University of Newfoundland, has written a balanced, beautifully written and illustrated book about Newfoundland's extinct Beothuk tribe. It challenges the widely-held theory that the Beothuks were intentionally exterminated by European settlers. This book belongs in every Canadian school's library.

Heart-warming findings
An old TV show triggered me to find this out-of-print book. The author, a leader of the series of expeditions, covers not just findings but all about expedition as well as local cultures which gave me a totally different view about the local people. A local man worker comes to the expedition site with flowers in their belt, or decorate a tool with a small bouquet of flower. In the area, men becomes rebellion fighters because of their pride and passion about their culture, yet possess such gentle flower-loving mind described as "incongruous". Finding of the expeditions which became the title of the book, that certain burial with flowers inside a cave where flower does not bloom. One of them was an arm cut off, one was blind, and those fact indicates Neanderthals living in the cave were caring enough to pick and bring flowers from outside the cave for the dead in such long time ago. The author couldn't finish the excavation as the political situation became threathening their presence at the site, which makes me wish the author could finish the excavation to bring out more facts. However, I thought this was heart-warming finding of Neanderthals as well as the present people. Neanderthals who dwelled in the cave long time ago showed their caring by flowers, and such gentle mind passed onto the present time by seeing the local men worker excavating Neanderthal also shows up with flowers with them.

Esthetic, ethereal, modernist, and yet timeless
Sheila Metzner's photography is transcendent, rich, refined, esthetic, ethereal, modernist, and yet timeless. Her images are fascinating as they exhibit an astonishing tonal range. Enhanced with informative and illustratively descriptive commentaries by Ralph Lauren and M. Raven Metzner, Sheila Metzner: Form And Fashion is a core addition to any serious American history of photography reference collection, and a "must" for any serious student of photography-as-art.

THE Sherlock Holmes
To me he will always be THE Sherlock Holmes. Regardless of what other people feel about Basil Rathbone, Carelton Hobbs, Clive Merrison and even Jeremy Brett, John Gielgud will always be the perfect Sherlock Holmes. And Ralph Richardson will always be the perfect Watson. Together they eclipse the whole of their peers, simply by the way they portray the master detective and his dear friend. That is the way Sir arthur wrote them, and that is what you will hear in these stories. My only complaint is that they cannot contain every scene that Doyle wrote for each story, but such were the constraints of 1950's radio (or 1990's radio for that matter). The episodes were written with a clear understanding of drama, and acted with the skill of master performers. What stands out to me is the mutual respect that Holmes and Watson share, as opposed to the browbeating that Rathbone dished out on Nigel Bruce's Watson ("Do you have to be so dense!"). And the mysteries are darn good besides. If you want to introduce someone, particularly a young person, to the world of Holmes you can do no better than this set. These are the tapes that endeared not only Sherlock Holmes to me, but dramatic radio and the skills of John Gielgud as well. You will love them.

Comprehensive Research and Good Writing
It isn't all that often that excellent research, great writing, and wonderful illustrations go hand in hand. However A Shipyard in Maine manages to get all those into one book.

I would suggest this book for anyone one with an interest in ships, sailing, Midcoast Maine, or the city of Bath, ME. Also it looks very imposing of coffe tables ;-)

Follow Siddartha's Way...
Herman Hesse is one of the most important figures of German Literature, and in my view the most expressive artist who takes his inspirations directly from life and how we live it.

I will not tell what happens in the course of the book; instead, I will tell you the emotions it evokes in one's mind and heart. Hesse's style is very elegant, and you will not want to turn the pages, because you will be afraid the pleasure will end. Indeed, it is beautiful; indeed, it is simple.

It's about a man, who learns the life from the very beginning. It's a story that will question your thinking about the life itself. It will make you fall into doubts; it will make you wonder what life could give you.

It couldn't have been more fascinating for one to see how the hard issues of life (love, money, purpose of life) could be layed out in a refined and tasteful storyboard.

Usually people have books, that they would call as 'the book of my life'. I must admit, that it is one of those books, definitely. The story is short, but the delight is eternal. This book should be read, and reread, and reread...

Excellent Teacher Resource
This is a well written resource book designed for teachers who might be "shy" about teaching simple machines. EVERYTHING you need to teach a great unit is provided: reproducables for learning centers, material lists, and a variety of assessment tools. I especially liked the section on building pulleys, spring scales, etc. Even teachers with a solid working knowledge of simple machines could benefit from this book.
