Dewey's Gospel Clown Skits/No 1
Published in Paperback by Deweys Good News Balloons (September, 1986)
Author: Ralph G. Dewey
Amazon base price: $4.50
Average review score:

Nice collection of Gospel clown skits
On the one hand, there's not a lot to this book -- it's short (30 pages), small (5.5" x 8.5"), composed of typewritten pages with some illustrations. On the other hand, there's a lot to this book. It crams much information and helpful tips into those thirty pages. The first 7 pages are talking in general about clowning in general, & gospel clowning in particular. The remainder of the book is a collection of skits, suitable for either 1 clown or for a small clown troupe. The skits include:
1 Clown Skits - Steal No More, Hop to Heaven, I'm Just Trying to be Good, Grow, Laundry Lesson
Multiple-Clown Skits- Cheap-Skates (one of my favorites, incidentally), X-Ray Machine, Outcast, Palm Reader, Wash Away My Sins
It also includes descriptions of simple-to-make clown props, including Pepsi Light (a soda can that 'lights' with a candle on top), the X-Ray machine, 'angel' wings made out of balloons, and several other balloon creations. It's a very good bargain.

Dinosaur Fact Finder
This book covers a very good selection of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. They have very good pictures and interesting facts. I especially like the graphic that shows the size compared to the size of man. I found this book to be very accurate and for the most part up to date. I would recommend it for children with an advanced interest in dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. CSE

Discovering Prophecy and Wisdom: The Books of Isaiah, Job, Proverbs, Psalms (Discovering the Living Word, Vol 4)
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (September, 1993)
Author: Margaret Nutting Ralph
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

"Make straight the Bible's pathway..."
The prophets did not see the future, they spoke about their own times. Later saints stressed Jesus' significance by using Old Testament sources.

Margaret Nutting Ralph's book explains the meaning and backgrounds of Isaiah, Proverbs and the Psalms. She also answers often asked, but rarely answered, questions that worry most readers of the Bible.

In a clear and easy to read style this book comments on passages, conventions and the context of these Old Testament books. For example, ever thought the Psalms repetitive? Margaret covers the Psalms' poetical form, purpose and use.

This book is suitable for high school to adult. The chapters stand-alone and so you can easily dip into this book. Each chapter ends with review questions and interesting discussion points -- ideal for class and lessons, bible study groups or individual reading.

I liked how the book could be read for basics, or more subtle philosophical insights. Everyone can get more out of readings in church, their bible and religion by reading this book.

Author: Ralph Turek
Amazon base price: $106.90

Easy to follow music theory
I've been using this book in my music theory class at Portland Community College for the past 2 terms and it is easy to work with. There are many examples by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and others to illustrate the ideas Ralph Turek presents. It's a great book for beginners, however some of the points aren't explained in simple terms which can sometimes confuse the reader. I give it 4 stars.

Emerson's Prose and Poetry (Norton Critical Editions)
Published in Paperback by W W Norton & Co. (March, 2001)
Authors: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Joel Porte, and Saundra Morris
Amazon base price: $19.90
Average review score:

Emerson 5, Critics 0
This volume is an excellent compendium of Emerson's work. It contains material not available in the Library of America editions. Beware of the critical essays, though, particularly the contemporary ones. It's hard to tell from Cornel West's essay whether or not he's actually read Emerson, but if he has, he didn't like him much. So why write an essay appraising Emerson? It's the silly, empty-headed kind of academic noodling that makes academia irrelevant to modern life.

This begs the larger question: Why would anyone read ABOUT Emerson, when they could READ Emerson? Ignore the critics, commentators and wannabe's. READ EMERSON.
