Creative Flower Arranging: Floral Design for Home and Flower Show

The title of this book should read creative vases
The entire book is devoted to most unusual vases which would be used by very few people. The actual floral designs used do not require a great deal of creativity.

The most valuable book on creativity in floral design.
This book is quite possibly the most valuable creative floral design book I have ever used. Not only does it trace the history of floral design in an interesting manner, it includes almost everything a beginner or an advanced designer needs to know about container, mechanics, and plant material conditioning. The elements and principles of design are clearly defined and illustrated. Color theory is explained and a color wheel is included.

Traditional line, line mass, and asymmetrical designs are illustrated and then the creative designs (abstract, assemblage, botanical, collage, construction, creative line, creative line-mass and creative line, framed spatial, hanging, kinetic, op art, parallel, reflective, miniature and small designs, still life, and underwater) are defined and described.

A separate section on Table Settings for flower shows clearly explains the difference between Type I and Type II Exhibition style tables and also defines the Functional table.

Perhaps the most exciting chapter discusses creativity-what it is and how to develop it within yourself. Even people who say "I'm not the creative type" may change their mind after reading this.

Exercises in Ultrasonography
I have to say that I thought this book would have more review questions in each chapter. Once you get passed chapter 1, you may get 15 to 20 review questions. I had hope to see more questions. The author failed to give an explanation to the questions and answers. Each chapter starts off with review questions. I would have expected to have read about the subjects before seeing the review questions.

In the instructions for students the author says "Pay attention to the key words and objectives". Well I was certainly dispointed because I did not see any key words and objectives.

The book contains unlabeled images and illustrations for every chapter but it failed to identify and describe the parts of the anatomy in the image. They leave up to you to figure out the parts of the image.

I am certainly disappointed.

Unbalanced and short sighted
The books offers some short term practical suggestions for women in difficult relationships. That's the good part. For the most part this book seems to be written by a very angry person who mostly advises women to distance themselves from their partners and other people and to squarely lay blame at their partner's feet. There is no attempt to suggest why couples get into trouble and why men behave the way they do rather than superficial suggestions such as "society makes them like this". There is absolutely no attempt to reconcile relationships through working together towards a common goal (sorting our problems). The author is claimed inside the cover to be a "feminist psychotherapist" and there is far to much emotive, biased and dangerous talk in this book for it to be taken at face value ("You can't say both parties are guilty or no-one will take the blame"! ). There are much better books on how to heal a relationship which are more insightful (try "We Have to Talk") and much more constructive. This is a negative book.

IMPRESSIVE INSIGHTS INTO RELATIONSHIPS
Betty McLellan's HELP! I'M LIVING WITH A MAN BOY is an impressive self help manual - a welcome contribution too those popular but useless recipes on how to keep your man. This is really a serious, compelling read with a sense of humour. All you ever wondered about in your relationship is discussed in this book. A must read!

Rushed ending.
Plot description on this book's Amazon.com page. Typical Betty Neels story. Uncaring relatives, plain heroine, handsome hero. Araminta tries, but she has no skills, Marcus doesn't really realize he loves her till she is gone, but tries his best for her. No old love interest in this one to stir the plot, but a series of mishaps. Good, solid story, just what we read these for, but the ending is rushed. I haven't yet come across a Neels story that didn't have a 'hurry up finish' ending.

not to be a nurse
as usual neels has written a wonderful story about araminta, whose dreams are proving ilusive to her.each step she takes forward in aspiring for her dreams is thwarted.and now that she is especially close to her training for becoming a nurse--dr.marcus van der breugh enters and she finds herself looking after his twin nephews in neels' favourite setting-holland.he tells her that she can never be a nurse and that comes out true.she leaves training to teach in a school--supported by marcus who finds her a job there so that he can court her.the end is quite rushed and the climax in apark where marcus finds her after she is jobless, is well written.

Not all bad, not all good...
This isn't a bad book, but the information is very broad, with not as many specifics as one might believe - or want. For exapmle, the book does not contain directions on how to obtain a work card to get a job in casinos, or what a work card is. Other info has nothing to do with Nevada but is still useful, like how to write a cover letter. The best info is the geographic info and the descriptions of the towns and real estate. The book's shortcomings deal with jobs and money issues (save real estate)Also, the book's writing style is very informal, to the point of dumbing down the material. Still, it's a pretty good place to start, but you'll want more specific info later.

Finally...a book that puts Nevada within reach!
This book is very insightful for those who wonder what Nevada has to offer other than tourism and casinos. A must read if you are thinking about moving to this state!

Incomplete treatise
The author does an excellent job of analyzing slavery, ex post facto. There is little information about the roots of slavery, specifically the institutionalization of slavery in Africa, well before Europeans began to use Africans as forced labor. Entire African nations were built on slavery. The American view of slavery is that Europeans went into the bush, captured slaves, and brought them back. Historical documents reflect that the slaves were bought from enormously wealthy and powerful black slave dealers along the Ivory Coast. Scholarly works should include the entire background of slavery if we are to understand this painful part of America's past as well as understand why it continues in parts of Africa to this day. A side note- the word "slave" has Slavic origins. Slaves were of European extract for centuries.

Good book, but could be better
Ms. Woods examination of the attitudes that led to enslavement of Africans and Native Americans is well done, but I wish she'd brought out some of the similarity in attitudes toward indigenous European culture, the Irish for instance. The same attitude of being "hardly human," and "savage," the callousness with which they were eliminated from their land in the late 1500's and the slavery that they experienced (200 Irish women were sent to Barbados as wives for black slaves, for instance) points to a bias which was cultural as well as racial. Well worth reading, however.

Sterile dressing
I've always enjoyed Betty Neels' books, as they're usually light but satisfying. This book was okay, but no where near her best. Megan is a nurse who is working with the imminent Dutch doctor, Jake van Belfeld. He falls for her nearly immediately, but for Megan, she's in a stale engagement with very 'suitable' Oscar, with whom she shares little to no passion, but she's very comfortable with and believes is best for her. But when Oscar falls for megan's little sister, Megan does the honorable thing and backs out. What she doesn't realize is Dr. Benfeld is waiting for her to realize that HE'S the man of her dreams, but it takes forever for Megan to wake up and smell the antiseptic. I thought she was often a very annoying character, who didn't see anything unless its spelled out for her. But Dr. Benfeld could be just as annoying, as it was hard to realize he loved her until the very end. In fact, more than once you felt he couldn't stand her! But he was a patient man, and waited for her to open her eyes. So, I found this book light in the romance department, but I'll give it a thumbs up if you like your romance a little stale.

I loved Reading this Book!
I didn't find the Quiet Professor by British romance book author Betty Neels to be stale at all and I really liked it, Sure some of her books have different characters in the same situations like an English nurse falling for a Dutch doctor but her books are so well written that each books situations always seem like it's totally new and I really liked the characters, the English nurse Megan Rodner and the Dutch doctor Jake Van Belfeld and in this book instead of being written as a girl plain in looks Megan is described as being very pretty so to me that is different than a lot of Betty's books where the plain or homely girl falls for the handsome doctor and wins his heart even though I still love her plain girl handsome guy love stories and I love reading about what is the same and what is different about the medical field in America and Europe! I highly recommend this sweet endearing book!

Boo! NO MAPS!
I bought a few guide books to plan a trip to Seattle, the city of my birth. With only a few days to spend, The title attracted me because it is the TEN BEST THINGS to do.

225 pages on TEN THINGS?

NO MAPS - all landmarks are the same print color, events tend to blend into one another. Also the book is large, not an easy fit into the purse.

I recommend Access Seattle, which is a great guide full of easy to read maps, wonderful reviews and an easy to read lay out! Also gives you clues into festivals different times of the year. Not to mention, a good size to fit into a bag.

I gave it two stars because the book is rich in history. So, it is an interesting read, but I would not plan a vacation around it.

America's Emerald City
This book has been very helpful in planning my first distance adventure by myself. Instead of reading EVERYTHING about Seattle, it narrows down things to the important information of opportunities that I have in my short week visit. This has been a great help in deciding upon B&Bs and hotels, baseball tickets, boat excursions, etc. It is a must read for planning a trip to Seattle.

pretty good but not what I expected
First, there are no color pictures in the book of the finished projects. The projects are great, some bigger than others, but I was really hoping for a definitive saw blade case. It's "use your own imagination" for that plus a few others. That's fine, but I was looking for more stuff to make, more practical, and something different. Still, I'll get some good use out of it, the water bottle holder, the lunch sack, apron, tool roll, and the visor caddy will get made for people, but not the stuff like Mary Mulari makes.

Good information!
This book has some neat ingenious ideas for sewing bags and other useful household items. If you haven't sewn before, or are a beginner, it has great information at the start about fabric types and things you will need to sew these projects. I have made several projects from this book, and the instructions are clear and easy to follow - I recommend this book!

History Mystery
Jonathan's Grandpa is under suspicion with the arrival of alady friend for Sunday dinner in this historical mystery which takesplace in the late 1800's in rural Maine. Grandpa is by profession a traveling photographer and when Jonathan is assigned to keep an eye on him as he travels to logging camps and the town of Masham unusual events begin to unfold. It's a tough task, not at all like the detecting done in the dime novels that are Jonathan's favorite reading material. Ostensibly training Jonathan to handle the camera and assist in the photography Grandpa is unhelpful, taciturn and unwilling to include him in anything but mundane tasks. Gradually the two develop some rapport, but as mysterious events dog their trail the clues multiply that a serious crime, maybe even murder has been committed and someone is after the photographic evidence. And they don't care who they harm to get it. A question of who to trust is at the core of solving the mystery and Jonathan discovers the answer when he questions his assumptions about friends and foes. Better than the usual plot and some engaging characters make this an attractive offering for kids in 4th-5th grade.

Not that great, but good
Read my title, that's all you really need to know. It was okay, good, and bad in parts. It's a mystery, but I don't like (most) mysteries, and I liked this. It's an interesting book. Buy it, check it out, read it.
