Never Too Late

Likable characters.
Back Cover description: She thought she'd finished with romance. After the breakup of her engagement, Prudence eagerly accepted Dr. Benedict van Vinke's offer of a job in Holland. It seemed the perfect opportunity to begin an entirely new life.
What she wasn't prepared for was the effect Benedict and his young daughter, Sibella, would have on her emotions.
When was she going to stop acting like a fool, she asked herself angrily, and remember she was just his employee?

Slightly different, Prudence is lovely, not plain; tall, not short and has a family. This is less a cinderella story and more about equals. Benedict is the one who seems unsure in this story. Worth the time-I almost didn't read it, I like the ones where the heroine is plain.

A Nice Collection with Lovely Photos
I was born and raised in the Lake George area. However, my interest in the local history only recently blossomed as I began my new hobby, postcard collecting. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful lakeside resorts and grand hotels prevelant at the turn of the century.

Ms. Buckell has compiled a wonderful selection of photographs and visuals from that charming time when ladies strolled through lakeside gardens and men rowed gently acrossed miles of placid waters in search of the best fishing locale.

While her descriptions and history are relatively superficial, she does succeed in piqueing further investigation and research. I was delighted to find this book and refer to it often.

Edgy
Back Cover description: "He's something of a catch you know". Eloise was told about the handsome Dr. Timon van Zeilst. "But no one's caught him yet." Eloise felt quite sure that it wouldn't be her. Why should he look twice at a plain English nurse with the beautiful Liske around? And Liske had claimed she was destined to be his wife. It was no good telling herself not to care, because she did--even if he was the most infuriating man she'd ever met!

This was somewhat typical of Ms. Neels plots; doctor, plain nurse, female villain and misunderstandings. In this story however, there seemed to me to be a little more tension/edginess to the story than I usually get with Ms. Neels books. I liked it, just can't put my finger on what was different.

The Prince and Betty (Collected Works of P.G. Wodehouse)
Published in Library Binding by Classic Books (May, 2000)
Author: P.G. Wodehouse
Amazon base price: $98.00
Average review score:

Wodehouse writing like Damon Runyon
Wodehouse is finely honing the comical style that characterizes the later novels. This novel, however, is very dissimilar to Bertie/Jeeves. Instead, it's more like Damon Runyon, if Runyon had written a novel. The characteristic near-misses and misunderstandings of Wodehouse are present, as is the jocular young man in spats (here called Smith, supposedly American, but reading like the Psmith of the Wodehouse books of that name), but the two main characters are college-educated Americans. It is the subplot in the last half of the story involving gangs and their "canisters" (guns) that makes it almost unbelievable that this is Wodehouse. Although comedic, the real level of danger presented to the characters is great, especially compared with later novels in which danger is usually in the form of an avenging aunt who threatens to cut off the money supply. Imagine what Wodehouse would have been like if he had chosen to follow the path of this novel rather than the Psmith novels or the Bertie/Jeeves stories!

Wodehouse does a wonderful bit of satire here on the "wholesome" newspapers of the day, probably little knowing that his fare would be held up as wholesome in later years.

A Good Read for Teens
Keely is a hopeless romantic but it seems that love has escaped her forever. After the recent loss of her boyfriend Mark in a drag-racing accident she is having trouble coping with her feelings and letting go. Then Trip comes into town and moves into Mark's mother's house!

Trip is handsome, deeply attracted to Keely, and volunteers at a hospital for children but he's hiding a secret. He was close to death not too long ago himself. That is, until Mark died and his heart was donated to Trip.

Second Chance at Love is a wonderful story of teen love, dealing with the loss of a loved one, and the importance of donating organs among so many other things. Betty Jo Schuler draws you in with the seriousness of life and holds you there in anticipation while true love develops. A good read for teens.

Nice, strong story, likable people
Back Cover description: Sister Tabitha was an efficient nurse, but when it came to matters of the heart she was less sure of herself. So when she fell in love, she had no idea how to deal with her feelings. Was that why the Dutch surgeon Marius van Beek called her Cinderella? If only Marius would ride up on a white horse and ask for her hand in marriage. But people lived happily ever after only in fairy tales, didn't they?

Typical but nicely done. Strong heroine, likable hero. If you read Betty Neels, you have some idea of the way the characters react. This is a pleasant, warm-hearted story. Nothing new, but that's not why we read these.

Good Reference Book
I have used this book in my reading classes for graduates. It has become an excellent tool in my classroom as well. I have lent it to several teachers to use when questions concerning phonics or methods arrive. It's an excellent resource book to keep close at hand in the classroom.

Valentine-love the name.
Back Cover description: At least the kids liked him! Dictatorial, overbearing and downright rude! Dr. Valentine Seymour might be an excellent pediatrician, but however good he was with his small patients, he needed to develop more of a bedside manner with adults. Daisy disliked him the first time they met and he certainly didn't improve on further acquaintance. But somehow fate-not to mention his twin nephew and niece, Josh And Katie-meant that she had to keep meeting the man. Of course, she had a lot to thank him for-her new job with the twins among other things. Had she misjudged him after all?

Another good Cinderella story from Betty Neels. Daisy works in a pre-school that has food poisoning, causing the school to shut down. She meets Valentine in the hospital. You know the story, and it has a happy ending. The only drawback for me was that there was so much time spent with the kids. Other than that, typical and enjoyable story.

Weej and Johnnie Hit Florida
These are comments I have received from those who've read my novel: "It was so refreshing. The humor was great and the characters were perfect." Pat Wallace, Simpsonville, SC

"The book is wonderful. You should sell it as a movie. The plot is suspenseful, humorous and certainly better than many of the 'family' movies in today's market." Harriette Acorne, Petaluma, CA

"Your book is fabulous." What you have written is "in the vein of Jan Karon, except funnier, or Carl Hiiason except tamer." Betsy Goree, editor of Lonzie's Fried Chicken, Lynn, NC
