Taking the Caribbean home
After two trips to the Caribbean I have fallen in love with the food and the people and the ambience and now I can enjoy the wonderful flavors and colors of Caribbean desserts all year long. Even reading the names of these recipes is a sensory treat, Ginger Beer, Mango Wine, Caramelized Mango Cream, Tropical Sundae with Ginger Lime Sauce, Mango Daiquiri Sorbet, Soursop Ice Cream, Ginger Creme Brulee, Tropical Chocolate Mousse, Gulab Jamoon, Rasmalai, Rum and Raisin Cake, Browm Sugar Chocolate Cake. I've made over a baker's dozen of these recipes and they're great. Now, whenever I get a yen for the Caribbean I'll just pull out Caribbean Desserts.

An unusually thoughtful and involving novel
The concluding title in the "Heather" trilogy by Betty Briggs, Challenge Of Choice is a thoroughly entertaining novel for young adults about Heather Chambers, an eighteen-year-old young woman who must choose between boyfriends, and between which jumping horses to bring to a an important show. As Heather's life grows more complex with conflicting paths, she has to learn the difficult task of keeping a balance as she makes the difficult transition to true adulthood. Challenge Of Choice is enthusiastically commended as an unusually thoughtful and involving novel. Also very highly recommended are the first two books in the "Heather" trilogy, Quality Concealed ...

Southern Storytelling at It's Best
As richly textured as the rest of Nelson's work, this book brings the Honest Women series to a satisfying conclusion. Nelson writes with grace and a sympathetic eye for human frailties. Never one for clear-cut conflicts and easy solutions, Nelson portrays life at its most convoluted and, sometimes, frustrating.

It's a Classic!
I've been teaching ESL for 16 years and developmental writing and reading, college level, for 10 years, and I strongly recommend Betty Azar's Chartbook as a reference book. It is written for the ESL audience, but I also use it in my writing instruction for native speakers.

I recommend it highly for ESL speakers who have finished their formal ESL instruction or who are in an advanced level. They should use it the same way they do a dictionary or thesaurus - as a reference book. There are numerous grammar explanations that are easy to understand. Azar provides several lists that students can use as a reference if the grammar rule/pattern is an obscure or difficult one. It has a series of charts for students to visualize the actual time that the different English verb tenses cover. Azar covers a great deal of material, but the book is only 140 pages total - small and thin. That makes it convenient to carry.

I also recommend it highly as a teaching aid when instructing native speakers in reading and writing so that teachers can more fully understand English grammar from the ESL perspective. When I teach developmental writing to college students, I find that I am oftentimes dealing with native speaker dialect issues, so an ESL explanation can be more appropriate. In addition, there are many ESL students in Freshman Composition courses, so the instructor needs to know how to help those students.

The Chartbook is a reference book. If you want the exercises, get the regular text or the workbooks. Azar has been criticized for presenting grammar out of context. I believe that is a valid, although not a shattering, criticism of her main texts. However, this is not supposed to be that sort of book. It is supposed to be a reference book, and the grammar will be out of context.

I recommend this book unreservedly.

Quality cheerful quiet time in a large family!
This story is simple but utterly charming with its two-tone illustrations and simple story about finding your own quiet cheerful time in a large family. Patrick is portrayed as a sweet but normal little boy in a family that sounds like it would be wonderful to be a part of. The story: Patrick O'Brien always laughed when strangers asked if he had brothers and sisters. Because if there was one thing Patrick had, it was brothers and sisters! Four brothers and two sisters, not counting Patrick. Theirs was a noisy but cheerful house but one day Patrick wished for just a little cheerful quiet. Patrick searches all over for a quiet moment in his family until finally he comes up with a solution that makes everyone happy.

An excellent resource book for elementary teachers.
I am a primary level teacher in a private school. Our curriculum is based on a program from California which usesthematic units and a project approach to allow the students to explore thier own interests while learning within the theme. Our themes are based on particular time frames in history, and every two weeks we "visit" a different area of the world within our current time frame. The Pre-Primary teacher and I have found this book to be a valuable resource for our curriculum. In this book we have found information on holidays and festivals, games and sports, foods, fashion, performing arts, music, visual arts and so much more! I have used this book to help me find information to present to the students, as well as to find information the children needed for their project presentations. And it is all listed by culture, so everything is easy to find. The teachers of Bright Ideas School really like this book! Thank you

The Role of Children's Literature in Christian Education
I first read this book in 1990 after it was assigned for a course on ministry with children I took in a graduate school for Christian Education. After 12 years I am still actively using it. The strength of the book is that it makes a convincing argument concerning the necessary of using children's literature in the Christian nurture of children. If you want children to learn to read and love the Bible, you need to use more than the Bible. This book convinced me of that. It demonstrates in practical ways how to use children's literature in connection with the Bible to give children a fuller understanding of the world God has made. Children's literature becomes a bridge linking the world of the Bible and the world of adults with the world of children. In addition to arguing its point and making excellent suggestions on how to use children's literature in the Christian education of children, the book also includes an annotated booklist of the best children's literature, the age groups for which it is written and a summary of the stories and themes you will find in each of the books. I highly recommend this book for parents, teachers, pastors and directors of Christian Education.
