Not the best
Having loved Betty's first book "Love, Ellen" I was surprised to be a little disappointed by this one. Still full of love and support, Betty does have good points to make; however, it gets to sounding like a broken record after a time. I think Betty's problem lies in the fact that society can sound a lot like a broken record on this subject, and feeling passionate about her own side, Betty states her points over and over again to compensate. Her style in this book is a bit more rushed and choppy. But, as it is a quick read, and has more specific advice spelled out for parents of gay children, I would still recommend the book to anyone interested in gay rights and coming out (from both sides of the fence--those doing it, and those hearing it).

Definitely More Than "Just A Mom"
For any gay child, reading more from Betty DeGeneres confirms that we want to adopt her as our own Mom. More personal disclosure than her first effort. The unfortunate breakup between Ellen and Anne makes the timing of this release a bit awkward though. For any parent who is struggling to deal with their child's sexual orientation, this is a must-read book.

A wonderful book filled with excellent advice
"Just a Mom" was a tremendous help to me when I was struggling to overcome my ignorance about my daughter's homosexuality. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a gay loved one.

Little Runner of the Longhouse
As an Iroquois (or as we prefer to call ourselves Haudenosaunee), I am deeply urked by this book!!! The book's sacriligious use of allowing a young boy to play with a false face mask rips at the core of my religion. A child would never be allowed to show such disregard for such a sacred object. This book should NOT be read!!!!!!!! At best it should be used to show the disregard for Native American religion and culture by the dominate society!!!

All the maple sugar I can eat
A favorite from my childhood. Glad to see it's still around even if it doesn't sit well with everyone.

Little Runner of the Longhouse is one of my favorite books.
When I was younger I really liked my dad to read this book to me. Now that I am almost 8 I can read it to myself. I like Little Runner because he is funny and tries really hard to get maple sugar. It also shows the ways of the Indians long ago. I like the part when he steals his little brother and hides him the best

My child was never afraid of going to bed before this book.
If your child isn't already afraid of monsters, DO NOT read this book. I had a perfectly ordinary 3 year old. Then we bought this book. Now he is scared to death of going to bed at night, afraid of monsters. Once the sun goes down and it gets dark outside, the panic begins. Again, he exhibited none of this behavior before reading this book. All of the characters in this book believe in and are afraid of monsters under the bed, goblins in the closet, etc. Even the Ferocious Beast is afraid of a mouse. What this book teaches children is to be afraid... a lesson I'd never want to teach my child. Now it's too late.

funny story about friendship, fear and imagination
Maggie is a resourceful little girl who plays in Nowhere Land with her friends Hamilton Hocks and the Ferocious Beast. Written and drawn by mother and son team Betty and Michael Paraskevas, this trio is quite charming. The friendship between Beast and Hamilton is sometimes on shaky ground, but Maggie unites them all with her affectionate diplomacy and problem solving skills.

In this story, the Beast is embarrassed to tell his friends his secret .... he is afraid of something. Maggie and Hamilton run down a list of things that scare them -- ghosts, goblins, aliens, sea monsters, etc. -- and each time they must admit that they have never actually seen one of these creatures. Finally the Beast reveals that he is afraid of mice, which amuses his two companions until he retorts, "At least I've seen one. And there's one next to you right now." In the next frame, Hamilton and Maggie are screeching and running around as the friendly little mouse scampers off, and this always gets our toddler laughing. While I've had the same experience as another reviewer, of having my child frightened by a book or show meant to ward off fear, we did not have that experience with this book. It is funny and enjoyable.

The author uses a vocabulary surprisingly and pleasantly varied for this age-group. The end pages feature a map of Nowhere Land and the storybook illustrations are bright and colorful. This is a fun read for preschoolers and young children (and their caregivers).

Telling children a good story is hard, made easy by few.
What I like best about the book is that it centers on helping children get over fears by showing them that it's only in their minds, and they can choose to alter the feeling into, surprisingly, nothing. It takes a special writer and illustrator to be to do that on a child's level. What I love about children's books is that they are simple, yet very profound--less is more, and Betty and Mickeys' book is a fine example of that.

Who Edited This?
These recipes are great--realistic food for real people who haven't a clue what lemongrass is--but who edited this book? It's filled with rambling, pointless stories and just terrible grammar, making it handy to flip through but a painful read.

Good ol' American food...
Having lived in California for most of my life, I am quite used to the trendy, healthy cuisines with costly ingredients you've never heard of. This book was a nice change. The idea is that all of the recipes have ingredients you could even purchase in a local grocery store in Oklahoma - where the author originates. I bought this book on a whim because it was in the clearance section of my local book store. I paid full price for the Italian version because the original was so great.

Rohde has given helpful tips in the front of the books for cutting fat out of recipes. Each recipe has the fat content and preparation time. The one thing that could use some improvement is cutting the use of refined sugar in the dessert section. Also, since Rohde is from the south I am guessing I won't see a vegetarian version anytime soon - too bad.

Great Idea But.....
I have read many diet books in my time, but this one seems to be more realistic than most. The idea of significantly reducing the amount of fat we eat is much easier in this day and age. However, the authors remark of not watching the amount of food she ate is troublesome. Large amounts of even fat free foods will still cause weight gain. I was also concerned about the amount of chemicals you would be eating when you use a lot of the fat free products. The recipies looked delicious and they all were made of products that we all would find in our local supermarket. No bizarre ingredients that no one will eat, especially children! All in all it is a good book and easy to read.

A Suitable Match

Only in a Betty Neels book, bottles to a Rolls-Royce
Back Cover description: "DON'T WORRY," COLIN SAID. "IT WILL WORK OUT PERFECTLY." Eustacia wasn't sure whether he meant the wedding arrangements or their future life together. She didn't know him well enough to even guess. It was a marriage of convenience, after all, not a love match. Colin had mad it clear that he wanted a down-to-earth partner to help him care for his brother's orphaned children--not a dreamy girl with her head full of romance. Even so, Eustacia found herself hoping against hope that one day, he might grow to love her as much as she loved him...

The reviewer from Ottawa, Canada has some valid points, but you don't read Betty Neels for reality. However, she makes you understand why the A-levels are useless in the first three pages. Nicely done story, strong characters, and happy ending. I always love the descriptions in Ms. Neels' books--food, clothing, places and homes. And I love the cars these guys drive; they cost more than my house.

Modern romance consultant doctor hero
I brought this one by mistake, set in London and the country in the 1980s, not my preferred time period, the book is well written but definitely on the fantasy side.

Heroine with 4 'A' levels decides not to go to University, this puts her in roughly the top 1% of the population, decides to take a job washing bottles because it pays well. Hero, 'Sir Colin Crichton' runs a Rolls Royce that never gets stuck in traffic, has at least two homes one in London, one in the country, both fully staffed, private income. Has reached the level of medical consultant / surgeon whilst in his 30s.

The author looks to be a popular one, and one of the nice things about books is you can make the world perfect, many of the characters are comfortable ones so you may enjoy this one.

This book has been reprinted in 2000 and may be available on the Amazon UK web site....

WOW!!
WOW!! What a fantastic book, I loved it so much I couldn't put it down! I just loved the characters, Eustacia and Colin and enjoyed reading their story! I just love the clean wholesome books that are a trademark of Betty Neels! The book is a KEEPER!!

Understanding and Using English Grammar: Workbook Vol. A

Understanding and using English grammar
The two volumes are basically exercise books without enough proper explanations, examples, teaching and lessons. Pure waste of money and time.

The very best guide for English Grammar
I definitely wouldn't change these workbooks (A and B) for other Advanced English Grammar Workbooks. If you want to master Grammar in order to top a TOEFL or TESL exam, I really recommend it. The examples are extremely easy to follow. The only problem is that I prefer a one-workbook system. Anyway, my five stars go to Betty Azar's Grammar Book.

Still the best
Teaching ESL for the past 10 years, I have seen and used numerous grammar texts. Although others try to be more communicative, the Azar series is still the best. The Azar series is more thorough than other series, and is just what ESL students long for. The third edition is great, and thankfully, the wait for this companion workbook is now over! Thank goodness for Azar!!!

Wish it worked the first time
I ordered two copies of this book. It is charming just like "What Makes a Rainbow", though I was disappointed to discover that the musical sound chip in both copies was defective. I've ordered replacements, but am hesitant to recommend this book.

WEAK COMPARED TO WHAT MAKES A RAINBOW
We got "What Makes A Rainbow" as a gift and the baby has loved it since 3 weeks old. It is one of our very favorite books and it inspired us to try this book, but the music chip was defective and the story is weak. Maybe our timing was off in terms of when we introduced it, but our baby never got interested in it.

Not your typical pop-up book!
My husband is a former public school music educator and chose this book for one of our son's two-year birthday gifts. We had no idea it would be such a hit! In less then one week, he learned the musical scale by heart!

Although called a "pop-up", this wonderful little book is really much more resilient and well made than a standard pop-up. Instead of typical paper pop-ups, each page reveals a beautiful ribbon of a different color to represent each note on the musical scale. Imaginative and sweet illustrations show how Mama bird teaches her baby how to make music, and baby bird learns the notes of the scale along with the reader. Each ribbon is sized according to the ascending note on the scale and makes a lovely visual effect when the scale is complete. This could also be a great tool for teaching colors!

My son is thrilled when we get to the last page and the ultimate pop-up, (this one is paper but well made) of Mama bird playing her scales in full glory, each one labeled and in corresponding color from the previous pages. You'll love the sparkle in your child's eyes when he discovers the best surprise of all - a well concealed music chip that plays the scale in ascending then descending order when you reach the grand finale' final page!

A lovely and charming book that will have your little one memorizing the musical scale and colors of the rainbow with eager delight.

Disappointing... Hostile to its subject
This is a disappointing biography of the Second Wave feminist pioneer, Betty Friedan. Its author spends so much time making insulting and belittling remarks about Friedan's behavior, clothing, relationships, lifestyle, etc., that the reader begins to wonder if it is a deliberate and underhanded attempt to discredit the feminist leader. The biographer apparently spent a great deal of time interviewing all of Friedan's past acquaintances, trying to cull out unpleasantries and dirty laundry. Everything negative that happens in Friedan's lifetime is blamed on personal shortcomings of Friedan. This is not a credible biography. Instead, I would suggest reading Friedan's own recent memoir of her life, _Life So Far_. Anyone who has read any of Friedan's books (_Feminine Mystique_, _It Changed My Life_, _Fountain of Age_) and been impressed with this great woman's strong voice for women's rights, and her extraordinarily powerful messages, will have difficulty with the negativity that mars this second rate book. I really don't understand why a biographer with so little empathy for her subject spent the time to write this book. Friedan herself is a marvelous writer, and she is misrepresented and underrated here.

Stimulating reading about "The Mother of Feminism"
Twenty-eight years ago, the work of Betty Friedan changed forever, my view of my role as a woman in society. Reading Hennessee's well-researched and balanced account of Betty's life and times, allowed me to reconnect with a special time and era to all women (at least white, middle class women!) It is fascinating to know Betty with all her contradictions exposed; her feelings of being marginalized and excluded, her need for recognition and acknowledgement ( especially from men), and inability to connect with her own spirituality and aging. Equally amazing is the fact that Betty's Feminine Mystique took feminism mainstream, but failed to acknowledge patriarchy as the root cause of the unspoken dissatisfaction and yearning of American women. Also of interest are accounts of "behind the scenes" maneuvers at key events in the Feminist Movement, highlighing the rivalry between Friedan, Gloria Steinem, and others. One can only hope that both women and men are learning new ways of being and can move to behaviors embracing a partnership model rather than a dominator model as we approach the new millenium.

KODOKAN JUDO is still more comprehensive!
I suggest buying KODOKAN JUDO, by the Founder of Judo. Every club has its own rank requirements, usually based on officially recongnized judo techniques. The book by Kano is the official description of most of these techniques! Of course, judo books are most helpful for someone who has attended some sort of instruction! If you have not had instruction, I suggest asking your instructor to choose techniques for you to learn and then you can cross reference that teaching with the book.

well-ordered, good pictures
I liked this book for these reasons:
* completely groups all throws as defined in the Go-Kyo
* the photos are good even for beginners, e.g. they show moves from different points of view
* covers 40 throws, ne-waza and even some katas
* does not try to analyze moves with vector-diagrams etc. as some other literature does

What I not liked:
* ne-waza covers only basic stuff, the book misses things e.g. "how to turn s.th."

DESCRIPTIVE AND EASY TO FALLOW. SO THAT ALL CAN FALLOW
ATLAST....... A JUDO BOOK THAT TEACHES KATAS, LOCKS, AND SUMBMISSIONS!! EASY TO FALLOW WITH GREAT PICTURE WORK AND EASY TO FALLOW DIRECTIONS! TEACHES ALL THE KATAS, AND REQIURMENTS UP TO YONDAN (4TH DEGREE BLACK BELT). GREAT FOR BEGINER TO BLACK BELT. RECOMENDED FOR ALL!
