Betty Neels, An old fashioned Girl!
Yes, she wrote a book by that title, but it fits her very well. Her books are reminisicent of the novels of the 1940's and early 50's, before they becaome so explicit. Her plots are re-used and predictable, but her characters come alive, and a reader becomes attached to them. She brings them back in later books, they are all acquainted with each other, and it's very pleasant to encounter them again. I know literary critics will laugh at me, but her characters remond me of those of Jane Austen, set in a more modern time.
I haven't said anything about Fate is Remarkable...I think it is my favorite of her books, an early one, before the plots became a little thin. Sarah and Hugo fall in love, unexpectedly, and all is well.
If I have missed any of her books, I don't know which it is, have owned all of them at one time or another. May they live in print a long time.

Favorite Redwork Designs
A fresh approach to an old idea.

Betty Aldermans' designs are updated and fresh, not the dour old penny square designs of yesterday. Her book contains 80+ designs and clear, complete, and easy-to-follow instructions for making eight projects. But that is just the beginning. The botanical, gardening, and small bird and animal designs lend themselves easily to mixing and creating your own original. The teacups and teapots are terrific. Best of all, Sunbonnet Sue finally received the facelift she so desperately needed. Alphabet Sue is just perfect for child's quilt. Sue with a tennis racquet is precious. I never thought I'd see Sue at a Xerox machine--definitely not your grandma's Sue.

If you're looking for a fresh approach to redwork, this book is for you.

One of Neels' best--a cozy winter read!
I have read almost all of Betty Neel's books and this is one of my favorites. The plot isn't deep, but the characterization is excellent, and the romance is satisfying. Yes, this is an "old-fashioned" book in that the main characters don't lust after each other nor have pre-marital sex. It is a gentle, thoughtful romance. My mom, dad, sister, and I have all read this book several times. One of the sayings that has become a joke in our family comes from the part where the old family retainer tells the couple that the "wind took the electricity," and later, we all wonder if the wind brought it back! It is the well-developed characters that make this book a classic. It is variation on the snowed-in house party theme, only in this case the characters were accidentally marooned together in a storm, and have to make do. Julia, the heroine, is an intelligent, independent nurse, and the hero is her forceful counterpart. I do wish the that the supposed "other woman" would be exposed for what she is sooner, but even with that frustration, it is still a very enjoyable book. I am glad that Harlequin re-printed it, since the old copies out there were wearing out. Now you can get a good used copy at a very reasonable price.

A new view by a famous potter
Betty Blandino's new book, The Figure in Fired Clay is spectacular. The collection of gorgeous photos alone make it a very thumbable coffee table book, but--make no mistake--it is more than that.

Blandino reviews the history of the seemingly universal tendency of people all over the world to take a lump of clay and mold it into a recognizable figure. Many of these artefacts come from civilizations of which we have no other surviving record. I loved the section on the earliest clay figures, and also the wonderful photographs of the work of contemporary ceramicists, many of whom were quite new to me.

Betty Blandino is a distinguished potter herself, and this is what brings this book to life. As she says in the Foreword: "Nothing but a small lump of soft clay accompanying these paper pages could have allowed those who have not used it to understand and feel the pleasure of this tolerant, flexible material as well as appreciating the wilfulness of its character."

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in pottery, and/or the human form, and perhaps like me have not seen how these two interests go together.

Long overdue tribute to Grable's input to the cinema
I was very happy to purchase this tribute to the film career on one of Hollywood's most durable musical comedy actresses. Long overdue, but well worth the wait. Masses of photographs, some of which I had never seen before, and a well catalogued screen career - including long-forgotten shorts she made under the name of Frances Dean. The reviews on her many films provided an insight into the golden years of Hollywood. An excellent addition to the "Films of..." series.
