Beginnings : a book for widows
Published in Unknown Binding by McClelland and Stewart ()

Average review score:

A practical discussion of widowhood
Drawing from her own personal experience, Betty Jane Wylie gives the reader an inside view of what it is like to be widowed at middle age. Although dour at times, this book is mainly filled with practial advice for the newly widowed. Information is given on finance and employment, relationships with friends and children, companionship and sex, travel, household repairs, etc.

This book is unique, in that it is not a detached, academic look at the grieving process. Wylie's personal anger and pain at her loss are evident. Although this book is depressing to read at times, it also seems realistic and practical.

Finding love
OK, the plot description is given in the editoral review. The professor is not a doctor, he's in finance and Deborah is a nanny. The professor, a widower, has a young daughter. Deborah marries him, and then they fall in love. One of the better stories from Ms. Neels and interesting in that the heroine comes from a loving family, and is not dirt poor.

Year-in-a-Box, not a wall calendar
This is a desk calendar, not a wall calendar, which is what I thought I was ordering. There was no picture so I didn't know. In spite of my disappointment, it is a great calendar, with lots of history and stories about Betty Boop, who for some reason has always been a favorite of mine.

Betty Boop's Sunday Best: The Complete Color Comics, 1934-1936

Oh, why don't you behave?
Collecting the complete color comics from 1934-1936, this volume even includes the earliest strips featuring actress Helen Kane, the Boop-Boop-a-Doop Girl. While Fleischer dropped the Kane conceit relatively quickly, the strip's Hollywood elements continued. Despite the Koko the Clown "Out of the Inkwell" anomaly, the storyline is relatively continuous, portraying page-long parables touching on fashion faux pas, affectionate appraisals, the foibles of fandom, liberated women, and challenging children. The recurring characters of the director, Aunt Tilly, Hunky, and Bubby contribute some consistency, but for the most part, the strip's cameo characters -- including Betty's many love interests, pretty boys all -- are relatively interchangeable. Bill Blackbeard's introductory essay adds some valuable cultural context to what might otherwise be mistaken as a one-joke wonder or Hollywood licensing deal, making the book a solid source of comic strip history.

Betty Crocker's Healthy New Choices
Betty Crocker can be proud of this book! The recipes are appealing, with easy to follow directions, and good tasting meals that are healthy. I especially appreciate the analysis of the serving calories so I can see the fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, protein etc. that I watch for my husband's diet and the diet exchanges that I use as a diabetic. Anyone new to having a restrictive diet should consider this book. I highly recommend Beef with Bow-Tie Pasta(page 118)as I recieved a high mark of approval from my husband on this dish. I found the leftovers made a great cold lunch salad as a bonus.

This is a great cook book for those just starting to cook and for those with experience. There are pictures of some dishes, which is a nice plus. It is also a good reference book for cooking. It lists possible problems cooks may have with dishes and then lists possible reasons. Good instructions.

Ultimately Scrumptious!
My husband got this for me after I bungled about four batches of cookies in a row. I haven't bungled one since. The recipes range from the simple and traditional: the ultimate chocolate chip, the ultimate oatmeal, and the ultimate sugar cookies, to brownies and bars (the lemon bars are PERFECT), to more unusual: specialty and holiday/party cookies. If ever I need a recipe for krumkake or orange madeleines, pizzelles or springerle, I know where I'll go.

The recipes are well organized and easy to execute. The pictures are in mouth-watering color and plentiful. My little boy loves to page through it to look at all the yummy varieties. If I had one criticism, it would be that this book should really be spiral bound, for those of us who really USE our cookbooks in the kitchen!
