Totally sold out for our Lord and Savior
This is the story of two people that God had His hand upon and the way He directed their lives. The young lady was raised in a missionary family in China and due to illness found herself back in the states. She recovered and continued her education with the goal of returning to China with China Inland Mission. She met her future husband at Moody Bible Institute but though they had fell in love they would not marry. She knew God had called her back to China but he was unsure of the call that God had for him. Both were well educated and very gifted and worked hard to prepare for the place of service God was leading them to. As it turned out God did allow them to end up in the same mission field and they did marry and ministered together. They had a child and all looked to be going well. The chinese communists had other ideas. Both John and Betty were beheaded for their faith. The child was spared. A great number of souls came to know the Lord because of the faith of the and obedience of this young couple. I found myself lost in the story as the author did a wonderful job of detail. An awesome book must read!

joy of signing is but its title; a joy! and signing!
back in the old country, the deaf community is a highlight. Though they are not treated to the BEST lentil perogies, they are treated to the 2nd best borscht. Lucky them...I love perogies... i need this book to give to my deaf granddaughter Oibaf. She is very young and very scared becasue she lost her hearing in a cooking accident. She was listening to music and the radiation in our gas stove reacrted with the sound waves, destrying her anvil bone. Poor little meshugina. She's still my little dear though. She needs to be joyous and sign, so pease rank this book well...take care and god be with you..Helga

Just For The Love of Flying

Couldn't put the book down!
This book has a very special meaning for me, as I learned to fly in the South African Gliding community, and know well many of the people and places she mentions, and had the good fortune of flying with a few of them. I have also flown "Betty's Wave".

Although I only met Betty and Pat on two occasions, and their daughter Sue once, I feel like I know them well - they are true legends in their own time in the world of aviation. I was vacationing in South Africa on the day of their tragic car accident, and heard the sad news from a mutual friend the same day.

Betty's writing keeps the reader enthralled. The editing is a little rough, though. There are sections in the narrative about her southward flight to Africa that deviate from chronological sequence. This is understandable: I assume the book was assembled from a manuscript that was still a work in progress at the time of her death, six years before publication.

For anybody with a spirit of adventure or a love of aviation, this book is a must!

Betty Miles is a great intermediate fiction author
I laid in bed the other night, trying desperately to think of the name of the book I'd loved so much in junior high. Then it came to me: "Just the Beginning". Cathy is the younger sister of Julia, a brilliant student and class valedictorian of her high school. You can imagine how difficult this must be for Cathy, an average student with equally average grades. To make matters worse, all her friends are wealthy, while her parents make a modest combined income- her Dad runs a run down drug store and her Mom is a cleaning lady for all the richies in town (including cleaning Cathy's friend's houses). Since Julia is bright, there's no doubt she'll rise above their circumstances and get a full scholarship to Yale. Between her family and the faculty at school, Cathy feels huge amounts of pressure to be just like her big sister. Unfortunately for Cathy, a suspension for ditching school is forthcoming, and she'll have to tell her parents, who she feels are already disappointed in her. Cathy has to learn the hard way that her parents love her just for who she is. Being a younger sister, I remember sometimes feeling the pressure to be like my older sister, but like Cathy, I came to realize it was all in my head. I loved this book and read it from cover to cover on a monthly basis. Betty Miles is a great author for any parents looking for books for their kids (ages 11-14).

Charming story
This is a charming story about an 11-year old boy in the coastal area of Bangladesh who tries to help take care of his mother and three sisters after his fisherman father died. I found tears coming to my eyes as I empathized with him in his small victories over very real obstacles that would be daunting even for a grownup. It tells us about life in this far away country in a very natural way. The story will appeal to kids everywhere in the 9-12 age group and older, and even to their parents and grandparents, like me.

an affirmation of marriage
An editorial review mentioned that this is a story about the near-destruction of a marriage. I see it, rather, as the affirmation of true marriage. Both the hero and heroine--having been misled about the character of previous betrothal connections must overcome feelings of distrust and personal pride to come to a true understanding . . . Trollope uses this novel to show that honesty and integrity are not just virtues; they are essentials. In a time when so many best-sellers end in divorce, Trollope's characters come to the end of this short novel stronger and more true--and still married. And those who are untrue are exposed along the way.

There is one in every class
Gracie Graves, an elementary school teacher, poetically sketches the personalities of the students in her class of twenty-eight. By using this method she is able to recall the names and personalities of all of her students over her thirty year career in the school system. I'm sure that you'll recognize some of these students as your classmates or maby even yourself. Comical characteristics are affectionately developed in both the text and the drawings. Have fun.

Kiss for Julie
This is a sweet and very romantic book about Julie who is a secretary to Simon a doctor.Julie is assigned to work for Simon when her previous boss had to retire. She is reluctant to work for him as she finds him not very friendly and he also at first is not to happy to inherit her.Gradually they find themselves unwillingly thinking about each other and then they fall in love. What is endearing about it is that Betty Neels very skillfully writes about their journey towards falling in love and also what was really nice was that Simon's feelings were also described by this author so making it more enjoyable.
