Knowing Captain Rob
I have not had the opportunity to meet Peter Mathiessen, but I could relate to his mention of sitting and listening to Captain Rob's tales, because I, too, have had that privilege. The book, Cracker in the Glade, is a collection of his ledger and it is written in his conversational tone. It is a recount of how Captain Rob saw the evolution of the growth in population in south Florida and the consequential degredation of the environment as he knew it. He is not judgmental in his description, rather it is matter of fact. Just as he viewed the hardships of living in Florida in the early 1900's as matter of fact. The reader is left with the sense that he knows the history of the Collier County area, and the inhabitants that endured the hardships together. While they were separate families with their own trials, they were one as a family of pioneers in area that was as rife with dangers as it was beautiful in the pristene sense of the tropical paradise. Betty Briggs is to be complimented for her sharing of her grandfather with the rest of us, so that we, too can know the adventures and evolution of this part of the Everglades.

great center activities
I use this book in my classroom as a cooking center. The illustrations and words are easy enough for a kindergartener to use and create a wonderful snack. Some great examples are gingerbread and cherry cheesecake. All of the recipes can be done using an electric skillet, kitchen cups and a few ingredients.

Destini's thought and feelings on my favoite childhood book!
This realistic fiction book not only shows what kids go through during divorce, but also how to deal with it. Little Casey is definitely going through a hard time. Her mom and Dad are trying their hardest to get her through it. The nice illustrations by Deborah Bargo contribute to the setting and plot where she fakes the chicken pox for her dad to come back, hiding under a shade tree, or just staying with Elmer Elephant, her stuffed animal, to keep her comapany. The way the story was told could be a personal memoir or just to prove a point, but basically it was a normal book...told in sentences. I have read this story over and over again because my parents divorced when I was a very young age. If any childs parents get divorced, this book will help them through it, and be read over and over again!

Delmar's Comprehensive Medical Terminology
The format of this book makes it easy to learn prefixes, suffixes, word roots, and putting it all together to form medical words. Also included are medical terms and abbreviations. Body systems are explained so anyone can understand them. Self-tests include crossword puzzles and actually make learning fun. The college I attend uses this book and I can understand why it chose this title out of the many available.

Diane Stories
Published in Hardcover by MacRae Smith Co (June, 1964)
Author: Betty Cavanna
Amazon base price: $6.50

Teen Nostalgia
I first read the Diane stories when I was in junior high school, tales of teenager Diane Graham and her friends. Her high school world was very different from mine (and everyone's!) but was so very appealing, you wanted to know what she'd have going next. Her babysitting enterprise predates the Babysitters Club book series, and was far more fun to read about. The loss of her beloved older dog Dynamite and the new collie pup she comes to love will remind everyone who's ever loved and lost a pet that such happenings are universal. Diane's intense interest in clothes, school, her friends, and of course Boys with a capital B may seem quaint by today's standards, but Betty Cavanna (who first published the three books, "A Date for Diane" "Diane's New Love" and "Toujours Diane" under the name Elizabeth Headley) writes with such warmth and wit, it is a guilt free pleasure to dip into this book at any age. While high school was never the carefree paradise some people like to think(Ok, maybe it was for the cheerleader crowd!), visiting Diane's high school years brings back snippets of universal memory for every girl who yearned to be popular, to BE somebody, to simply enjoy the golden years promised by pop culture. The Diane stories are a wonderful way to enjoy vicariously a special time.

Discovering Daisy

Probably the sweetest Betty Neels story I've read...
I fell in love with Betty Neels' romances after reading 'Winter of Change'. Since then, I have scoured through ebay and used bookstores looking for her books, and bought every book that has been reissued in the "Best of Betty Neels" and 'Harlequin Romance' series. I've found her books to be very sweet, romantic and heartwarming...

'Discovering Daisy' is a wonderful story about a Dutch pediatrician, Jules, who finds himself falling in love with Daisy, a quiet and kind English woman who works in her father's antiques shop. They have a habit of running into each other unexpectedly... Of course, the problem is that he is already engaged to Helene...

If you enjoy this book, I would also recommend 'Heaven is Gentle'. The storylines are similar, in some respects - Eliza falls in love with Christian, who is engaged to Estelle. However, 'Discovering Daisy' is unique from Betty Neels' many books, because the story unfolds from the point of view of both main characters, Jules and Daisy... (This really makes it alot sweeter.) Typically, the female character's point-of-view dominates...

Some other favorites of mine are, 'The Chain of Destiny', 'When Two Paths Meet', and 'Saturday's Child'...

I hope you enjoy this book and her many others...

This book changed my life
I read this book nearly ten years ago, got hooked on the professional way to clean, and never wasted time cleaning since. It's easy to read, with one or two pages per question. It, and the other Don Aslett books which follow, will change HOW you clean and WHAT tools you use to clean. After you read this, you'll laugh at ads for cleaning products, pass up those same cleaning products at the grocery store, and wonder why people always buy the wrong products.
