Delightful book about opening up to diversity & color.
This charming and colorful book takes children from their often limited view of likes and dislikes and invites them to appreciate the diversity and color in people and the world around them. Inviting children to see the beauty of difference, it stays light in tone and simple in its refreshing look at what happens when one shucks off narrowmindedness and sees the world through open eyes. A fun, fast read for early readers.

A practical, engaging and kind approach to queer blues
I heartily recommend this book for any gay or lesbian person who is suffering or has suffered from depression--a condition which is not at all rare in our community. The life partner or another loved one of a depressed person will also find a great deal of helpful information. Most of all, I appreciated the fact that this book really is gay specific--it is certainly not just another book on depression with a different cover slapped on the front. The authors are a gay man and a lesbian who work as psychotherapists in San Francisco, and the ways in which aspects of depression can be gay-specific, such as the impact of internal as well as external homophobia, are considered throughout, and always with respect to both men and women. I found that the sections on negative and homophobic self-talk really resonated with me, because it included some of the very statements I have used to malign myself, and I had never seen that in other books I've read on the subject. The case studies of different gay and lesbian individuals are also a strong point of the book; they cover such a variety of life stages and circumstances that almost any gay or lesbian person will find one or more stories that sound very much like their own. There is a tremendous amount of good information about different kinds of medications that can be used for depression, including an interview the authors conducted with two psychiatrists who are also a gay man and a lesbian. The interview offers much more than just a profile of the meds; it really delves deep into a discussion of approaches to medication and addresses some of the concerns one would have before undergoing treatment. The book closes with an excellent chapter entitled 'Befriending the Black Dog', a reference to the term Winston Churchill had for his own struggles with the blues. As the topics and perspectives covered in the book are reviewed, it is put to the reader to bring it all together in her own way, and to do so with courage and compassion.

An Experienced Guide for Spiritual Understanding and Renewal
Too often the strains of caregiving push individuals further away from their loved ones, themselves, and their spiritual centers.

Betty Free's book of prayers is designed to bridge the divide and encourage a stronger bond among all those involved. The prayers are arranged intelligently around themes that confront caregivers daily, as well as over the long term. She encourages us to meditate on love and family, but also change, worries, and fear. Like all experienced caregivers, Betty knows the power of laughter and hope. She appropriately shares her prayers in those areas as well. With over 50 prayers, the book serves as a weekly missal or bedside reading.

Betty does not neglect the important wisdom that the role of the caregiver is tied to the role of the care receiver (as well as to higher relationships with family, society, and God). Betty shares additional prayers specifically for care receivers, making this a particularly unique and valuable book. The inclusion of hymns and spiritual songs at he the end of the book encourages lively musical interaction between caregivers and care receivers.

I began by saying that the strain of caregiving often strains one's relationship with God: caregivers ask, "Why me?" or "How can God be so cruel?" But I also note that the challenge of caregiving more often brings about a spiritual change and insight. This book can be a catalyst for anyone who seeks that insight but needs an experienced guide...

Fun to read again and again
This is a great book for bedtime or to take on the road for Dr.s visits and downtime for children primarily under 8. Easy to read in a few minutes or if your kids are getting the swing of the easy rebus style of the book-they'll want to read it again and again. Colorful water color pictures let you or your child read the pictures into the worded sentences. Mostly in rhyme and a little silly, you'll find yourselves giggling at the thought of "Kangaroos paddling canoes" or "Giraffe sailing in rafts". Our second copy, now with precious pages missing, has taught our children the rythym and cadence of rhyme and helps them anticipate word connections. "Mother bear said, this time don't forget to comb your hair" with the comb illustrated by a drawing of a pretty yellow comb. The next time mother bear had to remind little bear to comb his hair. The word comb was written out-but a picture instead of a little bears brown hair was pictured for the reader to use as the rebus. What a confidence builder this lovely book is. A real find for readers with children who love word play and rhyme-It will keep both the reader and the read-ee amused for many fun filled hours-

A Must Buy for Ribbon Embroidery Enthusiasts!
Whether you already know how to do ribbon embroidery or not, this book is for you. The books starts with the basics from choosing fabrics to setting up your sewing machine to do ribbon embroidery. This is followed by step-by-step, easily understandable instructions on how to do the various stiches. From there, you are shown how to join those stiches to make everything from flowers to bugs and birds and monograms. It finishes with a number of projects that showcase the techniques shown in the book. Best yet, there are brilliant colored photographs throughout the book to show you how ribbon embroidery can be used in any number of ways. They even feature a section on using ribbon embroidery to embellish crazy quilts. I found this book not only helpful, but very inspiring.

A Childhood Memory.
When my mother use to read this to me it taught me alot about not giving up and to always try my best and work for what I wanted in life and to follow my dreams with intensity and I also liked the way the story has been passed through the traditon of Japan and carried it values onto the modern life it was a kind and passionate story which I still to this day would read. At a young age the book had been lost and well purchasing this book again has returned a part of my life and my heartfelt memories of my time with my mom. Thank You

A wonderful exploration
Betty Derig's book, A Roadside History of Idaho, travels the entire state, giving useful, interesting, and often rarely known facts and stories about Idaho. Without sounding too academic, the book is authoritative. Without being fluffy, it is light and enjoyable. Perhaps the most enjoyable element of the guide is that by cataloguing the history, the people, and the out-of-the-way places of Idaho, Derig successfully conveys a sense of mythology about the state. The reader, while enjoying the interesting and entertaining facts, gets the sense that Idaho has texture and history and a culture all its own - that the state is more than some sparsely populated, out of the way state that is only good for producing potatos. Betty Derig's book reveals Idaho for the enchanting, enchanted place that it is.

Even if you don't cook, Betty's books are the best!
Betty's cookbooks rule! It was hard for me to decide which one to review, they're all so good. The recipes in all are simple and delicious, and each book is a small travel masterpiece. The newer hardbound books are beautiful, but my favorites will always be her soft cover ones, with their gorgeous sketches drawn by her husband, Gordon.
